I'm graduating this month and will be starting a hospitalist job afterwards. I will also be moonlighting at another hospital. Am I required to have a DEA number to get hospital privileges? If so, I've been looking at the DEA application and it asks for business address. What do I put down if I'm going to be working at two hospitals? And what about the state controlled substance registration? Is this needed in NY? Does the paperwork ever end? Could I simply just apply for an NPI number? Sorry for asking so many questions but this is too confusing.

Yes, you need a DEA number. You cannot write prescriptions without it, and theoretically can't write inpatient medication orders (from the inpatient pharmacy) without it.

Use your home address as your business address, regardless. You want your DEA coming to YOU, not lost in some system.

Some states have a State DEA. I have no idea if NY does or does not. If there is a state DEA, you must get a State DEA number before applying for a federal DEA number. More paperwork, fees, and delays.

No, the paperwork never ends.

You will need a NPI number also. However, there is a good chance you have one already. All residents should have NPI numbers by now. NPI is completely different from DEA numbers.

Is it true I need a DEA number for each hospital I will be working in?

Your DEA number is specific to you. You only need to apply once, and that number then follows you wherever you go.

Ok, so Aprogdir said that I could put my home address as my business address. So could I just do that even though I'll be moving in a couple of weeks? (Still within the same county). Guess it doesn't really matter so long as I am in the same state?

Thanks for all the input.

Technically you are supposed to put the address that you are currently at. When you change addresses, you are supposed to notify DEA and get an updated license.

If you are moving in TWO weeks, I would put your new address on it (which I am hoping you were going to do, otherwise the license will be sent to the address where you are living now with no guarantee that you will get it, as these things are usually barred from being forwarded in the mail).

NY doesn’t have a separate state DEA, so you won’t have to worry about that.

FYI - You can register/renew for your DEA online, and print out official copies of your certificate as needed once your application has been processed. So I think you could put either your new home or your new business address (your primary institution, not your moonlighting gig) on the application, because it really shouldn’t matter any more from a mailing standpoint.

Thanks for your input everyone. I think I can tackle this now.

I applied for a license in Texas and later I applied for lincese in GA, I got my GA license faster. So If I apply for a DEA license through my GA license and move to Texas which I have to apply for a DPS before I apply for a DEA license can I use the same DEA?? I am confused becuase Texas law says I have to apply for DPS before applying for a DEA but what happens if I already have a DEA??

It sounds like you need both parts (state and federal) before you can write prescriptions in TX. Since you already have the federal one, all you need now is the state one. You only need to apply for the state one first if you don't already have the federal one. Good luck.

I have a Wisconsin License, but am still training in NY. Can I use my home address in NY? Or should I get a PO Box in Wisconsin?

If you are writing prescriptions in NY, then you need a DEA that reflects your NY permanent license. Thus you would need to either use your home address or your program's address there in NY. If you were writing prescriptions in WI, then you would need an address for that location as well. If you work in two states at the same time, you need two DEA numbers, one for each state.

Actually intending to do locums work at the local VA in NY which will accept my WI license, but they said I need a DEA first. Not intending to write any prescriptions, only need it for employment's sake.

I would ask the credentialing person(medical staff person who you send all your documents to) at the VA...you can work at a VA with a license from any state (doesn't have to be the state the VA is in), but I'm not sure how the DEA works. I would think you can use a federal DEA based on your WI license (which would not require a separate state DEA license/certificate like in some other states---not sure about NY---so you can get a number issued to you faster this way). It needs to be linked to the address of the NY VA (but with the WI medical license), so the credentialing person should know how this works.
