deadline confusion

Saw this on U.Melbourne application supplementary instructions

"Acceptance of Offers
Offers made must be accepted by 30 September for commencement in Semester 1 the following year. Applications made after that date will be considered if places remain available."

I assume this means that once you've been accepted, you have to let them know by Sept 30th if you plan to enroll. But this is a little disconcerting, because it says the deadline for applications is Dec 20th on the application itself. Does this make sense to anyone else???

I would assume it has to do with Australia's seasons being opposite those in the states. From what I remember from looking at abroad programs, their "semester 1" is during our spring/summer, and semester 2 is in our fall/winter.

So, if you apply in December, it takes awhile for them to go through the apps, and then interviews need to happen, then offers should be going out in the summer sometime. Then you would have to let them know by September 30th to start in our spring. Same sort of schedule as the U.S. schools, just offset by several months.

I didn't apply to any Australian schools, so I could be totally wrong, but that's my two cents.

I got a response from Melbourne and found out the applications are due Sept 30th. It's strange that it would say Dec 20th right on the application.
