I'd rather talk about my positive attributes rather than try to explain away my shortcomings. Just ask yourself, which essay do you think will help you more. It sounds like you think that your reason for your grades isn't all that compelling. If you think you can write a better essay for your unique qualities then pick that one. You are also competing against people who are going to be writing the positive essay. I think you might stand out for the wrong reasons if you choose the grades essay. However, if your grades so bad that they are screaming for an explanation, then choose that one.
