Wow I’m wondering almost the same thing but instead of Pitt my alternative is a bit lower ranked school and closer to home. Very similar pros and cons. Also very worried about how PDs will perceive Mayo AZ (though would this even matter if your paperwork, transcripts, and evaluations don’t distinct between campuses?)

I have a similar choice between pitt and a similarly ranked school. Im heavily leaning Pitt because of the UPMC system, the ton of basic science research, and because i like pittsburgh as a city. Tough choice but either way you honestly can't go wrong. Both are top notch schools.

In your opinion, would you say Mayo AZ campus holds the same weight as MN given the seemingly prestige obsessed nature of top residency programs?

Poor Mayo AZ lol. As much as they’re trying to make it equivalent to Mayo MN, it’s just hard to shake the general population’s perception of it (as seen from the results in this poll). Unfortunately, it seems most residency directors will likely view it this way as well. I for one think the education is equivalent (or at least, near equivalent), but the school definitely has growing pains, and residency directors may not view the AZ students to be the same as the MN students. I guess one undeniable advantage you will have at Mayo AZ is if you want to match into Mayo for residency—they will likely match just as well as Mayo MN.

It definitely sounds like your heart is with Pitt, and for the right reasons.

I remember being turned off at my Mayo AZ interview as well...not just by the tiny class size, but how they talked themselves up during the tour and other presentations. "Mayo brothers this, mayo brothers that, three shields"...it all sounded very culty to me and not as welcoming as I would've liked it to be. Additionally, the reputation they tout is not nearly as prestigious/well-known as they MN campus (as evidenced by my convos with some residency program directors). Also, I was not a fan of the tiny building that was intended to house the whole medical school. Really felt pretty isolated/trapped.

Just adding updated information. Mayo (MN) jumped up to one of 10 (Actually 5, exaggerating because of how ridiculous it is) schools at the #6 spot on new rankings.

I don't it should change your decision, though. I'd still say choose Pitt (#14) based off your Pro/Con list
