I've read several places that what matters most to residency programs, isn't so much the school you went to but rather the Hospital that's associated with it... In which case, if your parent's are willing to pay for you to goto UM, it might be worth while because Jackson is an awesome hospital and could look really good to residency directors. Just my opinion, note that I'm slightly bias as an undergrad at UM.

Shands hospital (UF) is also a very solid hopsital, though perhaps not as great as Jackson. However, I believe the residency director rankings were higher for UF than they were for UM, though I don't have them in front of me.

Compared to other medical schools, how difficult is it to get accepted into Florida schools?? I'm currently a Fl resident and I'm contemplating whether or not to relocate. Any advice is appreciated. Thanks!

If I were you I would choose Miami over UF ONLY if you would go to school in the Miami area. When I heard about this FAU program, I wasn't to thrilled with this fact for the next upcoming class: Only surrounded by 15 other students...low number of contacts and student diversity and interaction. That has got to suck!! Imagine if those other students had horrible personalities for the most part. Personally, I enjoyed having my classes with 150 other people. That way you can mix it up a little and avoid those who you don't get along with (which will happen ultimately). I can imagine in a class with 15 students this would be ultimately impossible.

Compared to states such as Texas, it's pretty hard to get into Florida schools. However, that's not to say it's impossible by any stretch. The #'s at the now 4 schools aren't super high (mcat's in 29-31 region). Where would you consider moving to? Also, note you have to be in a state for differing periods of time (depending on the state), to qualify for resident status (and it differs by school somtimes as well).

The relationship between UM and Jackson Memorial Hospital is what clinched it for me.

Jackson is the 2nd busiest medical center in the United Sates, UF and USF are good but I don't think the clinical training at those schools will be as indepth and diverse as what you'll see at JMH. Good luck with your decision!

Really. I didn't know that. What's this in terms of? Do you have any stats?

It is true that JMH is the second busiest medical center in the U.S. That is UM's biggest selling point by far. And though I have no doubt that you are going to see some things that you are not going to see in UF, I was worried more about the time that you would be able to dedicate to patients and really learn about their case. I was also worried about the amount of teaching time that these doctors will be able to dedicate to you. I got into both places, but I liked how UF sells their teaching in the clinical years. I am sure that both places have world renowned faculty, but I felt that UF provided a better learning opportunity. I would like to avoid as much scut work as possible, and that seems much more feasible at a smaller teaching hospital. Don't forget UF is a busy hospital nonetheless... in fact the doctors I talked with on my second visit were quick to tell me that it is the only hospital in FL which receives patients from all counties in FL. I am sure they see their fair share of gun shot wounds!!!

4 $16,000 tuition a year it was an easy decision for me b/w Miami and UF

Does anyone have any stats on this "second busiest medical center in the US" claim? I belive you guys, but I'd love to see some #'s as I can think of a few other places off hand that should theoretically be much larger than Jackson.

the busiest refers to # of admissions

i could not find anything about it specifically being the "2nd busiest" outside of the UM website and the Jackson Memorial Hospital web site... but it is mentioned in both web sites. These are the stats for admissions
"1,567 licensed beds, more than 1,500 physicians on staff, 60,000-plus admissions a year, as well as almost 12,000 deliveries, 340,000 outpatient visits, 102,000 emergency visits, 10,000 surgical procedures and 300,000 radiology procedures." I lifted these from some florida health site... i dunno how accurate they are. I am sure u can find more accurate stats on the JMH site (to tell u the truth i am too lazy to look for them).

I remember at the interview being inundated with such facts and being told over and over again that JMH is the 2nd busiest hospital in the US and the busiest single site hospital in the states. If you care you can probably call the admissions office to ask where they got the stats. 🙂

Most of those 150 don't even show up to class. Usually, they end up forming small study groups. I see them watching the lecture at the UM Coral Gables campus library or Law library all the time. Not a whole lot of interaction going on.

I am *this* close to deciding on UM at FAU. I visited the building yesterday and was pretty swayed by the intimate class setting, the personal attention, the beautiful area (which I am accustomed to as it is), the brand-spanking new facilities, the fact they give you your very own desk with a PC...and much more (parking, outgoing and friendly professors, etc). I talked to a second year UM (Miami only) student that was there and he said he only wished he had had this opportunity when he applied a few years back.

Plus, I get my full-fledged 'independence' when I get past my study-crazy first two years and get into the 3rd year where I'll do the clinicals at Jackson (like Hinkley said on the phone you get the "best of both worlds"). It seems more and more suited to my needs the more I think about it, and I have gotten over the initial hesitation that it may not be up to snuff...in the end, you are a UM student and were accepted as such.

To think it's all a very soon phone call away to being a Cane. :scared:

I'm sorry, but were you in my class? No...I didn't think so. You can rewatch lectures at any library (I often did this myself at Richter). Sure, there were some people from my class that didn't go to any lecture, but that was a far cry from being the majority. Don't act like you are the expert on something when you haven't even begun medical school at this point.

At last, it's ALL OVER. I ended up going with UM, and I feel darned good about it. In the end it was my decision and I feel very confident in the program. Thanks for all the help guys, and the tough love, it was worth it.

😀

Yay!

I made the decision back in May and haven't looked back since. Welcome to the UMSM class of 2008, Columbus!

Thanks Arsenic, I'm very excited (and relieved). 😎 Are you going to the Miami campus or the new Boca one?

I'll be at the Miami campus. I know that Indebt4Life will be at the one in Boca if you want to talk to one of your fellow UMSM@FAU classmates. She's awesome, just PM her if you have any questions about the program there. See you at orientation, Columbus!

CANES2006,
I didn't say that I was an expert. However, I did go to UM undergrad and my eyes do not deceive me. Many student opt to not go to class and watch it at home or library. I also know many many people in your class 06 that I talk to frequently and that is also what they told me. Unless, they are lying to me this is the information I got. Why the attitude? PMS? Or did the USMLE hurt you bad?

Haha. I can't wait to see you humbled my friend. Your little attitude won't get you far in medical school. I hope that you do not come to the main campus at Miami because we eat people like you for lunch and then spit you back out. If you show any of that condescending little attitude toward upper classmen we will make you pay. Remember upper classmen can make your life at medical school a whole lot easier by giving you invaluable advice, but with that attitude and total lack of respect for others all that you will be getting are doors slammed in your face. :meanie:

Now that the decision has been made, congrats. You will not regret not attending UF. Gainesville is a podunk little town. I spent three years there. What a hole. Now do not get me wrong, UF is a fine school, but the town, jiminy. I took a watch in to the mall to get fixed, and when I got it back it was set back forty years. And for those of you who decide to go to UF, I hope you like Orange and Blue, because those are the only two colors that exist in that town. You have not lived until some toothless person that has not shaven in four days and obviously did not attend college tries to argue that the whole school fell apart when Spurrier left. And then when she turns to her husband to get his opinion, watch out.
Needles to say, the education at UF is great, both undergrad and the medical school, but Gainesville itself sucks. Imagine, traffic jams in a town that size...oh well, I am sure to get some rabid fans try and defend it.....

What happen to the UM avatar? I like that one better. LOL

CANES2006,
My little attitude? WTF are you talking about? You are the only one with the attitude problem around here. Please, I don't need anymore drama. 🙄

Sorry, but I have to side with canes2006 on this one, though her response back to you wasn't so polite either. Much more importantly, congratulations to Columbus on your decision. Enjoy the warm south florida sunshine year round 🙂 (while you're not stuck in the library that is...)

True,
It seems to me that everyone on SDN has a rep to uphold or something. You cannot make a meager comment without being told off. I wasn't trying to act like an expert or give attitude. People misinterpret what you write on here and add their own meanings to your words. Whatever

😱 😱 😱 😱 😱

RELAX....

Indebt didn't come off with an attitude, she just wrote about things she'd seen and heard from med students at UM. You two disagree but there's no reason to get so hostile.

Yo, I'll get your back on this one. UF is a great school, but man, does G'ville suck. 4 years was plenty. I have friends that will end up there for 8 years between undergrad and med school. I don't know how they'll take it. That thing about arguing with the toothless local... quality humor.

Columbus: Congrats on your decision, you made a good choice.

Canes2006: Thank you so much for the entertainment. I've been laughing my butt off. I only wish you were up here at UF med. I would get a kick out of seeing your pissing contests in person. I use to hear banter like this all the time, but then I was promoted to the 6th grade and it all ceased. Thanks again, it was quite refreshing.

I agree with you, and looking back, her original comment wasn't very nice (attacking you for not being in the class and talking generally about the whole class without being in it). However, you responded and attacked with:

Why the attitude? PMS? Or did the USMLE hurt you bad?

That's not very polite and is uncalled for. Just my opinion.

Hey guys, let's all just chill, no need to get upset anymore. 😉 (probably futile attempt at peace) 😉

And...Thanks all for the support, it means more to me than I can say. 😀 😍

Hey, USF told you that you were accepted at UF? Aren't they not supposed to know the other schools you applied to? That weirds me out that they can discuss those things. Anyone know the rules about this?

the same thing happened to me. usf called me and told me that uf was giving me a spot. im going to withdraw from usf to attend uf. like the other posters mentioned... there is definitely nothing wrong with doing so.
