hey ppl,

im starting this thread as per the suggestions of my fellow members of SDN...this thread is for those of u who have just started preparing for the Dec NBDE Part 1..and for those who are YET TO START!

MS_TOOTHMANIAC has suggested a plan for us...i am pasting her message below...u can also click on this link. http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showthread.php?t=136657

(hey guys..i am also preparing for Part 1..its taking me a long time to study new topics..only becoz i dont know whats imp and whats not..so i have to read the whole thing...i have an idea...maybe all those who r trying for dec NBDE shd each view a topic...and then post on the SDN what to study and what not to study abt THAT topic....then we wd not have to read everything blindly to find which is important ..we can save a lot of time that way..

so if 10 of us view one topic each...we can all cover 10 topics in lesser time than we wd usually take if we review each topic completely on our own..

hows that? )

i feel its a brilliant idea..because i have come across the same prob..too much material tends to wither our concentration...instead of reading a whole text..we can help each other by mentioning the 'must-read' material of the topics we have learnt. For eg: lets say we r studying abt Mandibular Anteriors. the must read material wd be something like this..

1) common characteristics
2) occlusion
3) one thing characteristic of canine alone..

and so on..

so we can ALL concentrate on these important things first ...and then..do the extra if needed. That way we wont miss anything which is vital..

do post ur opinion on this, folks...other ideas are also welcome..

thank u, toothmaniac and meetlife for this wonderful suggestion.

im already excited abt this...

I think ure on to a good idea but if u really wanna know what's important do the decks and not just the texts...all the topics that u just listed u can find on one card o anotehr in the decks...they really expalin nicely what is important and they repeat the really important stuff over and over again so u can't miss it...so maybe u guys should divide up teh decks instead of the texts....they are much too vast for this exam...just my opinion

thanks Khurram... u have written the exam..so i'm sure u know what u r talking abt...u r right..we have to study SMART!! Texts r good for references and stuff...i think if u have plenty of time in the world then texts are great...im sure most of us r battling with time..so here's my plan..

Going thru the decks..and then the question papers ...seems like SMART study. the trick is to keep revising. kaplan reviews can be used as references besides the texts...and once u r thorough with the decks and question papers..then u can go thru Kaplan and texts and do a selective reading...

do let me know what u think...and thanks a lot for ur help...

hai ddscrazy..

welcome to SDN..

thanks for joining in our group study...i think u can forget abt how difficult the tests are going to be... coz there's no use panicking...in the end what matters is that we all do the best we can. + whoever said Canadian interviews & exams are tougher? i think the level of toughness depends on ur confidence in ur subject. becoz...in med exams...the key fact is..either u know the answer..or dont know it. they cannot ask anything which is not discovered and which is not in the book, unlike tech exams. i hope this thread will help everyone who needs a little guidance...

lets do the study in this order.

start with decks...u shd aim to finish abt 10-12 decks per hr giving particular importance to the explanations at the back. no problem if u r slow at first...u will surely pick up the pace as u go along...and will able to finish more decks in an hr...the important thing is to revise...so say every 2 days..do go back to what u have read the previous days..and revise..it will take u sometime..and maybe u will find u do not remember much...but thats okay..its normal..BUT DONT BE DISAPPOINTED AND START ON A NEW TOPIC...i have done that mistake...and i dont want u guys to do the same...thing is when u do that what happens is, in the end...ur brain is in a mesh of mixed information and then u will end up not remembering ANYTHING properly. if u think u dont remember, scan everything once again...try to question urself and find the answers without looking...when u r sure u r okay with it,only then start with the next set of decks...

u will find that when u stick to ur routine study hrs..u will concentrate more...when u concentrate..u will remember more...u will be enthusiastic when u find ur memory is improving day by day..then...on weekends...revise EVERYTHING u had read during that week. every fortnight..just go thru what u have studied for 2 weeks. i know this sounds silly..but we r not machines guys..revising is the only way u can retain 1000s and 1000s of pages of information. also every revision will take much lesser time than the previous. my friends who have written this exam say that whatever u study it shd be thorough or there is no point coz we r not writing essays here.

so, lets study precise and to the point.

thats it for now guys...do let me know hows it going...and do pop in ur suggestions..

meghana.

👍 good luck!

Hey Meghna: Great post....I am having a hard time trying to find motivation to retake my part I after almost 4 years. I think that your "study system" makes perfect sense, I was thinking about reading the decks once ( the whole box) and then do it 2 or 3 times more, but I think that your idea would work better...I will following your advise....See what happens....

YES STUDY SMART...
in short this was my schedule, and u can assume i hardly remembered anything from teh basic sciences maybe 5-10% everytin else i did al over agagin

Daily Schedule:

20 cards from each subject =80 cards a day, with each card ready CAREFULLY 3 times in detail...

1 complete old released exam per day

AS u do this u will find that day by day u will be able to answer a few more qeustion everyday dont get frustrated if u only asnwer 3 new questions one day or 10 new ones anotehr day THIS IS HOW U BUILD URE KNOWELDGE just keep at the scheduel and u will be confident going into the exam...adn everdya u take teh tests u will score slightly better adn better adn eventually u'll be where u need to be....people dont get frustrated after u go thru 80 or so flaschards then take a test and uer only able to answer 10 new questions on ure own..tha'st how it goes...tha's why u take ur etime adn keep teh same schedule over day..those 10 will add up to 20 then 30 and so on adn so forth and before u know it u'll be prepared...this worked really well for me and i didn't know anytying when i started! but then again let's see how i score my results should be out any day pray for me guys!

hey guys i am new to this site and i am also preparing for my part 1 and am confused and a lil edgy .but reading the posts and how u guys have it chalked out makes me feel all pumped up to study and smah the exams.i live in georgia and wanted to know if anybody else from here is giving their exams in december.thanks again all of u for letting us know of ur study methods which seems like a great help and i have started on these and they seem to help.thanks!!!!!!!!!!!

HEY PPL,

thank u for all ur responses. WELCOME TO OUR NEW STUDY GROUP!

okay guys...first thing i want to say is..if any of u havent begun yet..DONT PANIC! just dont waste anymore time. thing is guys...some of us maybe slower or faster than the others..so what i will do is keep a deadline for each subject...and the slower ones SHOULD FINISH in that time...even if it means putting in extra time and effort...and faster ones SHOULD NOT sit back and enjoy just because they have finished...every second is important...so go ahead and start solving the question papers of that subject.

we will solve question papers after EVERY subject we have finished (from decks)..and guys...all of us may not have ALL the question papers..and this is where we should HELP each other...lets all decide together what question papers to solve.. (released exam, KAPLAN supplementary tests, etc..) and then we will help those who do not have a particular paper by offering to send them a copy of the question papers by post (of course, those who dont have the question papers shd be willing to pay for them)..or even better idea was to have a space in SDN where all question papers can be put up so that we can ALL study from there. BUT LET ME MAKE ONE THING CLEAR, FOLKS. If we have something which we are sure that will be of great help for the exam, WE SHOULD NOT BE SELFISH in this matter and keep it to ourselves. SO LETS SHARE, PPL! Im sure we will be rewarded for helping each other. our motto is study together and WIN together. noone shd be left out.

okay so now we have to keep a goal. lets aim for 100%, folks. as the saying goes..if u aim for the sky..u can reach the trees..

now that will take some effort, sincerity and honesty to ourselves and our goal. LETS START TODAY.

lets start with DENTAL ANATOMY AND OCCLUSION.

there r abt 202 decks. (im following 2001)..lets start with 40 decks per day. SO we can finish it in 5 days..i.e. we shd be able to finish it by July 31st. i feel we can go faster as we move on..maybe we can do more than 40...but again..it depends on individual speed..so if u think u r slow...put in extra effort and try to finish in time..if u dont finish ..its ok..u can finish it side by side with the question paper solving. this is just my suggestion folks..let me know what u guys think.

u know what fellas? im getting addicted to SDN!! its giving me so much of enthu..and im sure all of us can make it if we try hard...starting from today.

LETS DO IT!

hi meghna
I am following ur time table.Trying to finish 40 decks a day.its hard for me coz i am doing 5 hrs job daily. But still try my level best to do that.
what is NBDE SUPPLEMENTARY TESTS.I have only asda a-k series.Let me know so that i am not left behind
Also let me know whether i shd purchase decks 2004 series coz ihave only 2001 series.
How many hrs u study a day?
My basics r not very strong still u suggest me not going for texts.

hi all!!!
nice to see the quick reply...specially meghana
by the way now a days i m doing biochem.....but i ll join u
i can't say i ll do all 40 decks a day,but i ll try up to 20-30.. 👍 as i m very slow.... 🙁
one more thing ,u said there r 202 decks,that means u didn't include ques,am i right?
well, the question is also importent as the ans......so that means there r 404 decks ,which all r imp.....
so do u think we can do it in 5 days? 😱
so we have to read 80 decks a day,to finish it in 5 days...
post ur reply soon

bye n take care

sorry abt that mistake ddscrazy...i meant Kaplan supplementary tests..
2001 is fine...i heard 2004 does not have much changes...perhaps our SDN friends who have them can help us decide whether to buy them or not. personally i feel 2001 will do just fine.
if u finish 8-10 decks per hr..u shd be able to do it in 4-5 hrs..try ur best!
also do list what question papers u do have..so that we can decide how long it will take to finish them.
try to study 5 hrs a day. some days u may not feel like studying at all..then go for a movie or something ...but make sure u compensate that the next day...so u dont have to stick hard to ur study hrs...only make sure u make an extra effort the following day so that u r not left behind.
i did not say that we shd completely ignore the texts and kaplan reviews..use it as a reference when u have doubts..after decks and question papers of each sub...lets do a selective reading for texts..we can allot a few days for that.

and dent_ist..yes its 404 when counting both sides..so yes 80 if u look at it that way..but then questions dont take much time to read..so u will be fine..theres nothing u cannot do if u keep ur mind to it..

take care ..

hai ddscrazy,

To put it simple, one chewing stroke is when the food is crushed between the teeth once. some foods like bubble-gum needs atleast 30 chewing strokes for it to become in the elastic consistency that we all love..hehhe.isnt that a delicious way of learning?? 😍

IDEAL CHEWING STROKES (ie which is least traumatic for the teeth and supporting strucs) is vertical motion..if cusps are worn and flat, vertical chewing stroke is impossible coz it will force mandible into a horizontal motion (simulating bruxism) ..so wear and tear will continue on teeth and alveolus.

for the chewing stroke...refer this link..

http://www3.bsb.musc.edu/Occlusion/HTML Presentation folder/sld001.htm

go thru slides 1 - 19. U sh'd get the picture..

u know what? i had the same doubt abt Posselt's envelope of motion...i had done some search on that..

Border movements of the mandible recorded in the SAGITTAL PLANE (by an extra-oral device) is called Posselt's envelope of motion..

we have learnt in Prosthodontics abt 'Gothic Arch Tracing' which is border movts recorded in the horizontal plane...but i think Posselt's motion was not given much importance...

do click on this link..

http://dental.columbia.edu/class_sites/sdos2006/class/prostho/lecture3.pdf

if u look at the diagram given here and then the picture given in our decks, u shd get it..

hope this helps.

meghana

👍 way to go buddy!

NICE POST!!!!!!

yah,it helped me a lottttttt!!!
thanks buddy 😍

well ,yest i did only 20 decks,/40 decks...........i need to finish my yest's n todays decks also.........

catch u later.......

Thanks a lot meghna great explanations!
u know meghna one of my friend got admission in calefornia univ.UCLA. He scored 91 in ndbe part 1&87 in part 2.He studied all texts thoroughly as well as decks kaplan asda.So do u think only refering texts at the time doubts is fine. What if ques is not from those three. At the same time reading the whole texts is lot much time consuming.
Anyways i have to complete the remaining decks.
Have u already studied texts?
May be ur basic sciences r strong.
From where u graduated from India?

hi meghna
read ur post eally motivating ,i am retaking my ndbe 1in oct ,i have started slowly ,finding it really hard to study again,i think this is a good way to build up motivation,by staying in touch and discussing.have u guys set a timetable.
pls let me know.

u know what guys..i cdnt finish yesterday's quota...i could do only 26!! sheesh! im so sad...thing is there were so many things i dint know..so it took me extra time to learn them + i took some time to revise the previous days decks..so now im sitting here and battling with myself as to how i am going to finish 54 decks today...but i have to, right? Because the more we postpone it, the more lazier we become..the more lazier we become, the more time it takes to finish...so, its a never ending cycle..that can only go downhill...YIKES! :scared:

ddscrazy..my basics r not all that good..and no..i have not finished the texts...JEES...i just started along with u guys, yaar! I have been thinking abt texts too...but i think finishing the decks and question papers will give us all the basics we need abt the subject...and once u have the basics..going thru texts will be a LOT easier. So side by side with the question papers..we can do the texts...we can allot one chapter each to all in our grp...so that we can post the 'must-read' material of our topics on SDN for the others. That way we can finish fast. Dont worry ddscrazy..we wont leave anything out!

by Aug 10th we shd have finished with Dental Anatomy and started with the next subject.

wisdomtooth, WELCOME TO OUR STUDY GROUP!!

we have started with the decks of Dental Anatomy and occlusion...40 decks(80 counting both sides)..we just started 2 days ago(refer page 1 of this thread for details)..im sure u can catch up...let us know if u need any help!

GOOD LUCK!

meghana 👍

Thanks a lot meghna great explanations!
u know meghna one of my friend got admission in calefornia univ.UCLA. He scored 91 in ndbe part 1&87 in part 2.He studied all texts thoroughly as well as decks kaplan asda.So do u think only refering texts at the time doubts is fine. What if ques is not from those three. At the same time reading the whole texts is lot much time consuming.
Anyways i have to complete the remaining decks.
Have u already studied texts?
May be ur basic sciences r strong.
From where u graduated from India?

Questions on the exam that dont come from THE BIG THREE (REPRINTS, DECKS, KAPLANS) you will not be able to find those questions ANYWHERE they are guranteed to thrwo in 10-15 questions that just have never heard about ....that's just how it goes...my best advice would be to try to eliminate at least one choice then take an educated guess...u have a 25% chance of guessing correct so go for it

Hello Meghna:

Well, yes...I took Part I 4 years ago and I don't remember very much about it...just that it was the most difficult test I have taken in my life!!! But, don't panic. My situation is different, I had just moved to USA and I was learning English!!! (I still am...). Also I had no experience with Boards because in my country We don't have such a thing. Plus, I had no dentist friends here and had no information about books, released exams, etc. I just bought the dental decks and read them once and that was all.........I got 80. Wich, considering the way I study It was not too bad.
I thought that as 75 was the passing score, I was fine...so, I concentrated in preparing for TSE....(which it is a requirement at Gainesville). I took it 4 times and didn't get the score that I needed . Then, I decided to apply to another universities that don't require that test. But, that's when I discover this web site and realized that my part I was not good enough.......
So, as you can see....I have to start from scratch!!!! If I knew what I know now I would have re taken Part I sooner when everything was still fresh in my mind...too bad I cannot go back in time.
Now, I am recovering emotionally from this and regrouping....I don't know if I will be able to join the study group right now and going at such a fast pace as you go because I have a 8 year old on vacations that "steals" my day completely....but I sure will be here reading the posts everyday, getting ideas, helping if I can and getting motivation from you...
please let me know if you know somebody selling used dental decks, mine are from 1998...Also, I'd like to ask you how many released exams are there....
Well, I hope you complete your quota today. Thanks again for your post,

Elto

hai ddscrazy..

welcome to SDN..

thanks for joining in our group study...i think u can forget abt how difficult the tests are going to be... coz there's no use panicking...in the end what matters is that we all do the best we can. + whoever said Canadian interviews & exams are tougher? i think the level of toughness depends on ur confidence in ur subject. becoz...in med exams...the key fact is..either u know the answer..or dont know it. they cannot ask anything which is not discovered and which is not in the book, unlike tech exams. i hope this thread will help everyone who needs a little guidance...

lets do the study in this order.

start with decks...u shd aim to finish abt 10-12 decks per hr giving particular importance to the explanations at the back. no problem if u r slow at first...u will surely pick up the pace as u go along...and will able to finish more decks in an hr...the important thing is to revise...so say every 2 days..do go back to what u have read the previous days..and revise..it will take u sometime..and maybe u will find u do not remember much...but thats okay..its normal..BUT DONT BE DISAPPOINTED AND START ON A NEW TOPIC...i have done that mistake...and i dont want u guys to do the same...thing is when u do that what happens is, in the end...ur brain is in a mesh of mixed information and then u will end up not remembering ANYTHING properly. if u think u dont remember, scan everything once again...try to question urself and find the answers without looking...when u r sure u r okay with it,only then start with the next set of decks...

u will find that when u stick to ur routine study hrs..u will concentrate more...when u concentrate..u will remember more...u will be enthusiastic when u find ur memory is improving day by day..then...on weekends...revise EVERYTHING u had read during that week. every fortnight..just go thru what u have studied for 2 weeks. i know this sounds silly..but we r not machines guys..revising is the only way u can retain 1000s and 1000s of pages of information. also every revision will take much lesser time than the previous. my friends who have written this exam say that whatever u study it shd be thorough or there is no point coz we r not writing essays here.

so, lets study precise and to the point.

thats it for now guys...do let me know hows it going...and do pop in ur suggestions..

meghana.

👍 good luck!

thats really the most unselfish thought I have ever heard from a person i have never seen! thank u so much, Khurram. so glad that u r okay now.

Have u started preparing for the interviews? let me tell u the story of a friend i had met during a conference i attended while in college. She is a Geologist and is at present doing her masters. she has a friend who is the manager of a leading Chemical industry..u may ask, 'so what'? the thing is this man did not know much abt chemical engineering when he got accepted to the post! he was working in the IT field when he saw the ad for this post..so as soon as he sent his resume..he started preparing for the interview..he wrote down all the possible questions the examiner cd ask and practised with a friend to answer the questions in a very tactful way..and what were his tactics? he wd answer his questions in such a way that emphasis wd be put into HIS field of expertise and then he steered the examiner into asking questions from his field!! u can say the examiner was FORCED to ask questions which r in his favour!! and HE WON! and to think..he practised all this!

so u see..u CAN change ur circumstances...just change ur attitude(dont just hope to get into a good college...tell urself that U WILL) ,..practise all the possible questions with someone (this is very important)..throw in a little tact here and there..and before u know it..it will be time for u to start another thread...

ON SUCCESS!

take care..

meghana. 👍

Hai Pooja..

Welcome to SDN! And welcome to our study group. Dental decks are cards with multiple choice questions on one side and answers explained in detail on the other. u can buy used decks at ebay.com

check out this link..

http://search.ebay.com/dental-decks_W0QQfromZR7

ur best bet wd be to buy everything (question papers, Kaplan and decks) all in CD. but be sure to check the feedback on the seller..to make sure u get good stuff.

u can read the other pages of this thread to get an idea of how to begin.

take care..

meghana.
