Can you defer for a year if you get accepted into Medical School? or do you need to have a good excuse?

Some schools allow it/will consider a request, but I can't imagine any school NOT wanting a good excuse....why would you want to defer if you don't have a good reason?

I heard the MCAT is valid for 2-3 year. If I take it this year it will become invalid in 2015 but I wouldn't finish my program till 2016. So I would apply 2014-2015 in order to make sure I wouldn't have to take the MCAT again then. A year before I finish.

Wait to take the MCAT. Med schools want you to apply for the year you plan to matriculate. They won't look kindly on you applying for 2015 entering class with no intention to matriculate then and no ability to complete your program by then. Why are you in a hurry to take the MCAT?

Good luck on getting any acceptances.

"So, it looks like you're applying for next year, which you won't be eligible to attend. Why are you wasting our time?" is pretty much going to be par for the course.

The main reason is I have just taken all the course relating to the subjects on the MCAT. So waiting might be detrimental in terms of studying for 3 to 4 years. I thought it would be better to take it now and set it aside so i don't have to worry it about it in the future?

if you apply in the cycle from 2014-2015, you are expected to matriculate in fall 2015 unless you have a "good excuse" (aka you already have signed up for peace corps/americorps/teach for america, etc. and you need to finish your placement). having to finish undergrad isn't a good excuse. in fact, you probably won't even get in on that cycle.

It's not like you are forced to decide between taking it now or taking it in 3 years. You could take it next year. Or in two years.

Many people finish the majority of their pre-reqs long before taking the test. If you actually know and understand the material then it should all come back to you after reviewing for a few weeks before taking the test.

Undergrad? I wouldn't finish my graduate program by then which I'm starting next year.

You're starting pharmacy school next year then you're planning to apply to med school after that? Sounds like you don't know what you want to do with your career. Don't start pharmacy school. Take a year off and figure out what you REALLY want to do.

You won't be able to defer under your circumstances.

This. If you want to be a doctor, concentrate on getting into med school. If you want to be a pharmacist, attend your pharmacy program. If you don't know yet, wait to start anything until you figure it out.

I'm not confused. I generally want to do both. I know it's impossible to do practice both at the same time but I want the possible to switch between them

I do not think this is a sensible option.

Shadowed a General Surgeon and Psychiatrist for 2 months freshman year. Shadowed a neurotrama pharmacist for 1 month. I volunteer in Emergency Department/ other parts of a hospital watching both pharmacist and doctors in their settings.

Good luck getting admitted to medical school under these circumstances. Schools will not consider your plan to be a rational one.

Well I pretty much figured this was how this was going to go. I truly truly don't mean to offend or be rude but I never really asked for opinions on whether it was a good idea or not. I just wanted to know if I could defer or not and I got my answer. Thanks.

I think you misundersand what 'defer' means. It means you are accepted but matriculate a year after you're supposed to. After you're accepted, when you took your MCAT becomes irrelevant.

I know at least one person who has been encouraged by medical schools to apply even knowing he will defer to do TFA for a year. I doubt your excuse would work, though.

Yeah I pretty much figured. Thanks dreamweaver.
