Deferral-Friendly Schools...

Re-opening an old topic but what if I end up needing more time to finish up my Master's thesis and get a publication out of it?

I will be an MS graduate and have a publication....does that not count as adding to my ability to be a good doctor?

Personally I'd say the MD degree trumps the MS degree. I don't know that they'd grant a deferral just so you could finish.

On a side note, I know a handful of people who have completed their theses in medical school (over the summer if needed). One of my classmates even defended his PhD dissertation.

It is not a big deal to defer. You just need to show that you're doing something with the year.

some schools require a letter from your grad school during application stating that you will mos def finish before medical school

Yep schools require such letter either from the chair of the grad department or the graduate supervisor but most schools have no mention of graduate requirements what so ever.

I am assuming that if they needed such letter they would mention it.

I will still get my PI to mention it (if she agrees) and send the LOR to all schools (will exceed the limit at many places but I guess it should be fine as I have a legit reason).

It might be just me but if I could get a deferral, I would. It will be a good way to have a worry-free break while doing something else.

And I think schools would have a limit as to how many deferrals they grant in order to allow them to plan out the class size etc.
