TLDR: Can I qualify for in-state tuition after receiving a 1-year deferment? I was originally classified as OOS for tuition purposes.

I recently applied for and received a deferral to begin medical school next year (2025) instead of this year. I am currently considered OOS for tuition purposes, but I am now living in-state and will meet all the requirements to qualify as an in-state student by enrollment in 2025. I am curious if the deferment would prevent me from being considered an in-state student for some reason.

P.S. The reasons for the deferral request are personal (multiple family emergencies) and unrelated to the question.

You'd have to ask the school about what you would need to do. Do you currently live in the state?

Probably not. Most school registrars have something along the lines of "must live in the state for a reason other than going to school here." Holding a deferral for med school would be pretty solid proof against you. Call the registrar and see. 🤷‍♂️

Yes, I currently live in the state. It is the state I was born and raised, and most of my family lives here. I will soon have a state driver's license and will register my car here.
