Is a bachelor's degree required to get into med school? Or is it possible to get in with just the pre-requisites for Med School? May be a redundant question, and I apologize if it is. I am new here. 🙂 Thanks a bunch!

I'm sure there are exceptions, but by-in-large, you should complete your degree upon matriculation to medical school.

Think of it like the NFL. You don't have to be fast, talented, strong, and a bad role model, but if you aren't, the odds are against you.

Generally, most require a degree unless you are doing a joint BS/MD program in which a degree is conferred to you upon completion of first year of medical school for your bachelors degree.

Some schools allow you to get away with getting in after completion of 90 credit hours.

But generally you need an actual degree to get into medical school.

At most medical schools just about 99-100% of matriculants will have bachelor's degrees.

Some schools don't per se specify that you need a degree, but in fact, everyone they accept tends to have one. You will not normally come across any people without undergrad degrees in med school. There's probably an exception or two out there, but it won't be you or anyone you know.

👍 Mine doesn't. Others I visited required one by matriculation even if you didn't have one by the interview.

Unless I'm misunderstanding the question, I think having one by matriculation is not really the OPs question though -- he was suggesting just having taken the prereqs, but not planning on completing college before attending med school. I agree lots of people haven't completed their degree requirements by interviews (and of course none of the BS/MD types will have their BS degree till substantially after acceptance.) OPs question, I believe, is can you attend med school having never received a bachelors (i.e. bypassing it).

At UCSF you can, they give you a bachelor's in medical science for kicks too.

The answer is YES. I may do this if I matriculate into a program that begins early AND does not require a BS. I need one summer session to finish up a couple of courses to attain my BS, but won't make time if the med school program begins August(ish). But keep in mind that some schools do require a degree...

According to MSAR, while many schools will not REQUIRE a degree, those are exceedingly rare judging by the number of people who matriculate without one (according to MSAR). Can one enter med school without a college degree? Most certainly? Is it likely that an applicant will be accepted without one? 95% of the time, probably NO.

EDIT: I'd also like to add that many med schools leave that degree requirement out of the way because they don't want to draw themselves into a little corner if a really top notch candidate for whatever reason does not have a degree handy or if they want to accept people through the BS/MD program or for whatever other exceptions. The college degree is, for the most part, not an option, but more of a requirement, even if med schools does not say so.
