I am currently a sophmore and would like to transfer to another school to major in dental hygiene(Bach. Sci) which is affiliated with the dental school(UNC) if I am accepted on next years application cycle I would be a junior when I attended whereas if I didn't I would be a senior at my current school majoring in biology. I know that everyone says that the degree doesn't matter but dental hygiene would really help wouldn't it? My main reason for doing this is so that if I do not get accepted on the first time around I can do a post-bacc/masters program and work as a hygienist. My dad pays my tuition and has said that he would let me do this. Does this sound like a good idea or should I just finish up a year earlier at my current school in biology?

Stat's- 3.5 freshman year community college
2.3 first semester at UNCG none of the courses were pre-reqs(failed a drama appreciation class and will retake..i believe the two grades will be averaged on dental applications
?? second semester im taking bio 111 w/lab and chem 111 w/lab foreign language and math, I believe im looking at a's and b's this semester.

I'm pretty sure that applying to the hygiene program is what I am going to do but I just want to run this by yall to see what you think.

Thanks in advance for your responses

I'm confused, is your overall goal to gain acceptance to UNC DDS, or to UNC Dental Hygiene?

if you're looking to be a hygenist, then go for it. if you're looking to be a dentiist, i don't know if that may be the best route to go. i don't think it really matters what you major in that will get you to dental school.

if your ultimate goal is to be a dentsit, then i think you should try to get your grades up where you are and do well there. you can always do post-bacc work and use that to help raise your GPA. the schools do take that into consideration.

ultimately, if your grades are what would keep out from gaining an admission then you'd have to go back anyway...so it would be really hard to work as a hygenist while doing post-bac....

but that's just my 2 cents...good luck on whatever you decide! 🙂

you gotta raise that GPA up. getting accepted is ultimately about raw numbers, believe it or not. focus on getting your GPA up, get good DAT scores, and you'll see that everything else is just big hype

thanks for the advice guys..I think im gonna just stay here

UNC's website says they give preference(or something like that) to people that complete the dental hygiene program. If you're a NC resident and had high 2.x GPA, I'd say it's worth it.
