Does anyone have any information on working as a hygenist while in school? Whether there is a required exam to take to get a license, how much is it if there is one or are we already licensed to clean since we're in the process of becoming dentists? Thanks!

You have no idea how hard dental school is buddy. If you have some spare time, my advice is to take a nap. I know someone who was a dental assistant every summer. But he was already a dentist in another country and on top in his class.

I've been asking about this, and apparently it's really tough to get permission and everything ready for the hygiene exam (and yes, there are specific exams and states are discouraging dental students from doing it more and more.) I'd probably look around on the ADA's web site or call them. A lot of people advised me against it, saying it's a huge pain and that no one would hire you.....

If you DO find any information, let me know since I'm interested as well! (Either for PA or Mass, especially)

In PA, the only way you can do it is if you've already got a hygiene lisence. One of my friends went to hygiene school before dental school so she works just about every other weekend.

But aside from that, I don't htink there's any way for a dental student to get a hygiene lisence without having gone to hygiene school...

I am currently applying to d school, and I was wondering if it is possible to work about 5-10 hours/week tutoring/teaching ( assuming you can get the position)? How difficult would it be to work weekends just a few hours?

I have heard instructors say they worked during dental school or know people who have done it, but I doubt the validity. Most likely, they are full of sh**. There may be 1 in 1000 who could actually pull off working through dental school. I would never try it.

I don't think it would be bad, but perhaps you might consider holding off for at least the first semester to see how things play out. Just be sure to save up enough over the summer to support yourself (and of course sign your soul away to loans 🙂)

I am a second year at SUNY Buffalo and have worked a anywhere from 16-40 hrs/month as an RN (I already had a license). It sucks giving up the little free time that you have but it does help to pay the bills. If I was only making 10 bucks an hour it wouldn't be worth it but this allows me to pay the mortgage. Dental school is a lot of work but there is no reason that somebody can't work a little if they want to or need to. I can't help you though on what the requirements would be to work as a hygienist though.
