Hi,
I have a question regarding working at a denturist's lab over the summer. The denturist in question has his own lab, but is partnered with my mom's general practice and comes once a week or so. I would like to see if there is anything I could do in his office for the experience, however I don't know how to approach him. Does an untrained student like myself have any place in an office like that? What are your experiences?
Thank you.

I've been working at a dental lab for almost 2 years and was hired with no experience whatsoever. I work in the crown and bridge department but I know that they hire in the denture department without experience as well. It never hurts to ask!!

I am really interested in working in a dental lab as well, I am wondering are part time evening employees typical? Obviously I am in school during the morning and I know that the actual offices operate in the morning as well, but I am wondering if people work at the labs on later schedules? Any help appreciated.

My department is the only one that hires part time but I think that's mainly because my supervisor is so laid back. The other departments like a simple schedule so they just hire everyone at full time. They're open M-F 8-5 so I typically just work in the afternoons.

I'm not sure how most dental labs do their hiring or scheduling, this is the only one I've worked in. I would just go to as many as you can in your city and ask for an application. Then when you turn the application in ask to speak to a manager. Personally give them your app and explain to them your situation and why you want to work there. Follow up with a phone call in about a week if you haven't heard form them.

I hope this helps! Even if you don't get hired I know that our lab lets people and schools shadow. So at the very least you could always ask to spend an afternoon there so you can see some more of what goes on.

Is it a denturist or a dental lab that does dentures/partials?

@doc toothache from what I've been told, he is primarily a denturist although he does crowns and bridges minimally. I'm not entirely sure how it works.

Why not work in your mom's practice? I understand being interested in how dental labs operate but you would gain a lot more from working in a dental office than in a dental lab. If you start off in a dental lab you will probably just be doing a lot of the busy work: pouring and cutting models, mounting, organizing cases, and doing pick ups and deliveries. Also you don't actually learn anything about dentistry other than gross anatomy.

But if you are actually interesting, start off by asking if you can visit and watch him work. He will most likely have no problem showing you what he does day to day and from there you can ask if he needs any help around the lab.

A denturist is a dental technician who is licensed to make and fit artificial dentures without a prescription from a dentist. Unless you happen to live in a state where this is legal, you may wish to choose your terms carefully since in dental circles, a denturist is persona non grata.

I'm a licensed denturist who finished school in Canada. I would like to correct that Denturist is not dental technician. Denturist is primary oral health practitioner and differ from dental technician. Most of us graduate and earn dental technology degree and enter denturist program to learn all clinical aspect. I see so many negative comments related to denturism profession in dental forum by active dentist and it really seems unprofessional and against states professional misconduct law to spread wrongful information to public about other profession. World is changing and branching like you see medical field. There are so many different practitioners. Please do not think dentist is only the one receive adequate education and acting rude.

This thread is four and a half years old. Are you digging up the past trying to be offended?

Dentists don't receive an adequate education, they receive the pinnacle of education when it comes to oral health. I wouldn't want anyone with only an "adequate education" to treat my family.

Yes, I'm digging into it because it keep appear on google and misleading public. I want to ask what is length of education related to removable prosthetic and treatment planning do dentist receive? Let's be honest. I have several dentist friends and heard only learned two quarters during their entire program. I respect dentist as natural dentition specialist but denturist profession deserve some respect as denture specialist. There so much more with denturist that you dont even know. I think dentistry is moving fast and it is time for dentist to give up on removable and focus on other procedure that they are specialized for. That would be very helpful for public and denturist dentist relation.

I can see you're very passionate about your profession and I have no doubt that you are very accomplished at what you do.
A wise person (my father lol) told me that "You only know what you know". We are all experts at what we think we know. It's what you do not know which is the problem. You, my friend, do not know everything there is to treating the oral cavity.
With your assumptions .... how long will it be before there will be a sister company to Smile Direct Club. Maybe Smile Denture Club. 1-800-Dentures.
The general dentist is the gate keeper for all of dentistry.
Your statements are your own and quite frankly are not helping your cause.
