Assuming you get 2 or more acceptances after Dec. 1, one of which is your #1 school, would there be any reason to put down more than one deposit??!?

I wouldn't. From what I understand, schools really hate that. Plus to be honest, its a little bit selfish to do so. If you get into your top school and you know that it is where you want to go, then I think that its best just to put that one deposit in.

Yeah it seems a little odd to me but when I was talking to an addcom at UNLV they told me to put down more than 1 deposit... I wondered why I should if I get in where I want.

At the UCSF interview I was told that it is not uncommon to ask for an extension on the deposit deadline. Do you guys know anything about that? If I get in to UCSF around March, I would not want to waste a 1000 dollars elsewhere.

at columbia we were told that it would be very unwise to double-deposit and that if we did so, there would be consequences.

I so confused; what if I get into Columbia,Penn, and Stony.... I really do not know where I want to go yet.... Maybe the adcoms will just reject me and make the choice easy.

Sounds like a threat, what consequences?

That's funny. The only way they could know that you double-deposited is if you retain several acceptances all the way to next summer - just make a decision by then and they'll have no idea you double-deposited.

Of course, if you have been accepted to your top choice you shouldn't be dropping deposits all over the place. If you are still waiting to hear back from your "number 1", I think it's fine to hold a place until you do find out.

basically dr. mcmanus told us not to double-deposit and if we did, that they would find out since dental schools talk amongst each other regarding this sort of thing. i think if you double-deposit, a school may retract their offer of acceptance. he told us that we should only put a deposit down for our top school we get accepted at at that point in time, and to withdraw our spot if we put a deposit down at another school. he said it's selfish to hold more than one seat and prevent someone else from having the option of being offered said seat. i know that this is also frowned upon in many medical schools as well.

the way I look at this, " you are not taking someones seat". eventually every person can only take ONE seat. Is it really a big deal if someone has to wait another month or two. What if like in my situation I really do not know where I want to spend the next 4 years of my life. Is that even legal to withdraw an offer for no actual reason?

Geez, ask some of the people who only get waitlisted or only get interviews when others decline acceptances. I bet they think it's a big deal to wait another month or two....

I do get your point, but if there are any spots you don't need, it would be most considerate if you let them go as soon as possible. 🙂

O I agree with you 100 percent. Holding spots for no reason it totally retarted. But if there are actually reasons in trying to decide between 2 schools I don't see any problem in waiting until like mid Jan. Like i said b4, im sure i will just get a reject and the process will be made for me. I didnt mean to sound like an ass but everyone knows that a lot of people are doing this. Come to think of it, you have until like the end of december to make a decision and im sure i can make a choice by then.

I agree to both of you... In a way it is selfish, that is IF you have 2 deposits down and really know that you have already chosen the school. It is also true that other people are hoping and praying on getting in so once you decline one offer the other people on the waitlist are gonna be excited.

But I agree with lollipop, this is a life changing choice, what if you are torn between two schools... I think you deserve the time to decide and make a good educated decision on where your going to live/study for the next 4 years! Possibly 5 if you goto USC!

Firstly, you are given 45 days after Dec. 1 to make a decision. This is plenty of time to revisit schools, etc. Then you get 30 days, 15 (I think), etc as you get closer to the first day of class.

Secondly, it is a May 1st deadline to withdraw yourself from any double-deposit situation. After that, you will be given a notice to withdraw extraneous held spots within two weeks. If you don't, well, you're going to be stuck on a certain creek without a paddle. So if the schools aren't so savvy on giving you the extension, you *could* technically double-deposit until this date. I've really never heard of this type of extension, though. And really, a month is a good amount of time for a deadline, I think. You most likely have a good idea of your hierarchy of schools if you did your homework during this waiting time. If you're waiting on your top choice, but get into #2 in the meantime, you could put in deposit at #2 at the last minute and then withdraw from #2 if/when you get into #1.

if you have 2 schools you are really torn between, i can't see it taking en entire month or two to decide. chances are they are both great schools and there are pros and cons to either one, but it really isn't that hard.

as for it not being a big deal for someone to wait 1 or 2 months without hearing back yet because their spot is reserved by someone else, who is going to suffer more in this case? the person who has 2 spots and is having a really tough time deciding between 2 schools that want him/her or the person who hasn't heard back from a school that is potentially their top choice?

Of course it's legal; what are they going to do, force you come to their school?

ive seen this question come up alot on SDN and i cant figure out why. assuming you get 2 or more acceptances on Dec 1, you have 45 days to place a deposit. 45 days is more than enough time to make a choice about what school to attend. you should review each school you were accepted at and decide which one is the best for you... it shouldnt take longer than 45 days.

no i didnt mean the applicant withdrawing, i meant from the earlier post where someone said that after given an offer the school can withdraw b/c u have multiple seats..

everyone has great opinions, and they all make sense. I guess you are right, 45 days is a long time and should be fine. Believe me, I am not the type of person to want to make others suffer. I guess I and others should stop counting our chickens early, i still think it is a valid topic to discuss. This is forum of people who usually disagree on everything lol

as i'm reading this, i'm thinking, do people have that much money as to double deposit, I mean damn, send some $$ my way, I could use a tablet pc for dschool...in essence, dont be greedy, think about how it could be a close friend or family member you're holding a seat out on

Oh, of course, I agree people might need a little time to make the final decision. As others stated though, you're usually given about 30-45 days. I would hope you could narrow it down to two maybe, at least by the time you had to put down deposits.

I was mostly giving lollipop a little crap for sounding like it was no big deal to make others wait. I know that's not what he/she really meant though 😛

what a sick person would put down more than one deposit and constrict other people's chance of getting in...

i'd put down 2 deposits cuz my fiance has to wait til march to find out where she matches

Check this out this might interest you guys https://aadsas.adea.org/aadsas2008/instructions/adeaguidelines2008.pdf Applicants holding positions at multiple institutions. Dental schools participating in AADSAS will report to AADSAS by May 1, the names and identification numbers of candidates who have paid a deposit and/or hold a position in their entering class. After May 5, AADSAS will report to each institution the names of candidates in their entering class who are holding acceptance(s) at additional institutions. Dental schools will have the option of rescinding an offer of admission to candidates who have paid deposits and are holding positions at multiple institutions. Dental schools with candidates holding multiple positions on May 1of the year of admission will give such candidates a minimum 15-day notice if they choose to withdraw them from the entering class. This policy will be evaluated every two years by the ADEA Section of Dental School Admissions Officers to assess its impact on applicants and dental schools and provide applicants a reasonable time-frame to complete their enrollment process.

Yea this makes sense, may is a long time away.....

DrSmiles12,

If I were you (and I was in your shoes last year), I'd pay both deposits. Unless you received both of your acceptances the same day you don't really have the 30 to 45 days to decide. If you're still in undergrad it would be a little harder to evaluate which school to attend with the end of the semester approaching.
Some ?s to ask yourself while deciding:
1. What makes your 1st choice your first choice? Does the other school not have it?
2. If money is a factor (which is shouldn't be, because once you graduate you'll be able to pay it back), which one is more economically beneficial? In most cases you will have to also pay for your own housing and depending on the cost of living, you may end up needing more money for the school with the less cost of attendance.
3. The location
4. Which teaching style will you benefit from more?
5. What is the curriculum like?
6. When does the school schedule its students to take the boards? Is that when you want to take yours?
7. What is the pass rate for the schools? And make sure you are looking at the most recent board results because some schools will provide a average over the last couple of years instead of last year's pass rate.
8. Is the school prostudent? Is there a student support center available?

Also remember that at the end of your four years you will an equivalent degree.

You could call the schools to see if you can have a couple of more days to decide. (the worse that can happen is that they'll say no)

You should decide soon after the holiday break.

Hope this could have been of some help🙂

Yeah, I would too. For some of us, our top choices relate to where our significant others gets in as well. 😍

Make multiple deposits. If you get more than one acceptance, then by all means take as much time as necessary to decide which school is the best for you. I believe you have until May 1 to hold multiple deposits, so just be sure to reach a decision by then.
