It may not count towards your school GPA, but I think if you take any classes outside of your home school you still need to provide a transcript and report your grade in that to AMCAS.
Please correct me if I am wrong.
In any case, I don't see how this would qualify as depressing news.

Your school GPA is different than your AMCAS GPA, which will include all courses taken at all schools.
It's depressing because wouldn't it mean that your science GPA would be lower when med schools look at it?
A few points ...
1. Why would you expect courses taken at another university to be calculated into the GPA at your home university? Different school, different GPA, it's pretty obvious and shouldn't be a surprise at all.
2. I think that you are misunderstanding what the previous poster said; Your science GPA will be calculated by AMCAS. While it doesn't help your science GPA on your home university transcript, since AMCAS takes into account every class that you've taken, AMCAS will calculate your science GPA. If you take classes at multiple universities, your science GPA on your home university transcript doesn't mean anything since EVERY class taken ANYWHERE becomes a part of your overall science GPA.

I just found out that if I take physics during the summer at a four-year institution other than my university, it doesn't count towards my science gpa.
Is this disadvantageous for me? I mean, so med schools don't even consider it as a part of your sGPA?
Maybe not at your college for obvious reasons, but it'll show up in your AMCAS GPA
I thought medical schools make decisions based on your undergrad institution's science GPA and overall GPA. I had no idea that AMCAS calculates your science GPA based on science and math courses taken wherever and that med schools only refer to AMCAS when looking at your sGPA! That's why I was freaking out...
Thank you so much for clarifying. This is a huge relief! I guess this means that I can take physics classes over the summer after all.

Your college GPA means nothing. Your AMCAS GPA means everything
Your college GPA means nothing. Your AMCAS GPA means everything
👍
OP: You should should check AAMC's rules for calculating science gpa. I'm pretty sure that regardless of your college's sGPA rules, AAMC would calculate your summer physics grade into their version of you sGPA.
100% correct! It WILL count towards your AMCAS GPA
OP, pay attention!

I actually didn't think to ask anyone about the whole other institution classes getting calculated in the AMCAS science GPA. But... I was planning to take orgo in the summer. I didn't end up doing that, though I was bummed that it wouldn't show up in my GPA. But if you get an A in orgo, let's say... They will see it. And it will still be considered impressive. The grade you get still matters and it still counts.
I find the title of this thread vastly exaggerated and facetious.
Even if this didnt count towards your AMCAS GPA, how is this "depressing news"? Big deal...one of your classes wouldn't count for your science GPA. Don't be unnecessarily dramatic

Dumb question, but I was taking a non-science class which was a pre-req for my major at a CC and I did very well. My academic advisers always told me I only needed a C to get the credit and the grade doesn't matter. For clarification because I am in disbelief, the awesome grades I got WILL chip into my cGPA on AMCAS/AACOMAS??

Bit sad how far the threshold for "depressing" has fallen.
OP should be a journalisy. Imagine how many views their articles will get by adding exaggerated titles...
Imagine how many wars and riots OP will cause with such exaggeration
