Hey,
I'm a sophmore at college doing predental and ive been having trouble with my grades....i got a C and C- in the Bio's, C and C- in organic chems, B+ and B+ in intro chems, B+ and B- in caculs, and B+ and B+ in english...i hav yet to take physics..but anywayz i was wondering wat i should do abt my C's...should i retake those classes again at my college or another college during summer when i hav time or wat?....my gpa at the moment is a 2.8 🙁

Take a year off of school, work, get some self-discipline, figure out whether or not your willing to do what it takes, come back, redo your core classes, get all A's, then apply.

WOW, take it easy on him. Get the grades up, it won't get any easier. Are C-s passing??, I don't know if they are. you might redo C-. If you want dental you need at least a 2.8 assuming you kill the DAT (I mean really kill it).

GOOD LUCK

I dunno about a year off.... but you definitly need to make some changes if you want a shot at dental school. A 2.8 really isnt going to cut it. You're gonna need to bring it up as much as possible.
Work on your study habbits.... study more and more often. You've gotta put in the effort if you want the payoff later.
Good luck👍

I'd retake at least a some of the bio and ochem courses. A few C's isn't going to kill you, but straight C's in those subjects will. But just signing up again for those classes is the easy part. What you really should be asking yourself is what are you doing wrong with your studying. The lower division bio courses shouldn't be the least bit difficult, so I'd guess you're just not putting in the time necessary to learn.

I'm not saying this to sound rude, but how does anyone get c's in bio assuming you're talking about bio1 and bio2. I don't understand it 🙁 I can understand C's in orgo but bio? (Not singling you out, there are other people who bomb bio classes, I just always wondered).

You should retake the classes you got c's in both the bios and orgos.
You can do it and while I don't think you really need to take a year off, I just think you might want to switch up something that's preventing you from good grades (Whatever it is, I'm sure you know what it might be!)
Pull up that GPA.

You can do it and goodluck 👍

I don't understand this either. a C is an average student grade and well, you shouldn't be getting those in Biology especially. Biology is not hard. It is just memorization, which is something you need to spend a lot of time on. I suggest you retake these classes. You have to reevaluate your study skills. Whatever you're doing obviously isn't working for you.
Obviously, not everyone is going to have an amazing memory and can cram for the test and easily get all the things they teach you. I could never do that! As a result, I spend wayyyy too much time studying. Know what I am doing to get my Animal Bio grade up by the end of the semester? The same thing that got me nearly perfect scores in cell biology last semester.

I read a paragraph and then try to summarize it without looking at the textbook. If I missed one point, I go back, read it again, and say it to myself. If I missed that point again, I keep doing it until I got everything important from that paragraph memorized. You HAVE to repeat the paragraph from the beginning even if the point you missed is at the end. This makes connections between topics in your brain.
Then I write it down and go on to the next paragraph. Then I go over my notes once or twice a day for a two weeks or more, depending on when I started studying and when the test is. You master the material this way and it stays with you for a LOOOONG time so that should help with DAT as well.

I had classmates in every science class that prayed just to pass, let alone get "C"s. Sometimes one or two people would get "A"s on a given test in certain classes. Was this because they were all dumb? An emphatic: NO! This is why I hate it when people brag about their GPAs on here. Some of the people who earn "C"s in classes know worlds more on a subject than someone with an "A" from another institution.

Actually you're right. Last semester one of my "friends" only read the power point slides our professor gave. I memorized the textbook. Guess who got a better grade?
At least I know more than her.

HOLLER to that one!!!!!!

You will definately need to retake some of those classes (C- is not acceptable for dental school). But, I agree that you may need to take a break. Although you may not need a year off, I would suggest some other options:

- Go on a study abroad, or service abroad for a semester - there are tons of oppurtunities and it will look good on your application. Plus, it will give you a break from science courses and a chance to re-evaluate your study habits/motivation. It's a win-win situation.

- Complete a whole semester without any science courses. Take some easier courses that will give you more time to evaluate how you study and how you manage your time. When it's time to get back into the science courses you'll know more about yourself and what you'll need to do.

A lot of applicants do poorly their first few years and they go on to dental school, so you're not out of the game. You just need to give yourself some time to mature academically.

Unless you feel worn down, I do not think a year off is advisable. I actually don't think that is good advice just after high school. Between college and dental school it makes more sense. The problem is if you are actually trying and struggling you are up for a miserable, discouraging 7 years (should you get accepted into dental school). I figured dental school may be easier than undergrad..it is NOT. It is probably 2-3 times more difficult and I went to SUNY Buffalo which is a pretty good school for undergrad. This semester of dental school we took nearly 40 credits and had only 1 hr break in a 9-10 hr day. We are talking histology, physiology, pathology, microbiology, periodontology, operative dentistry (and lab) and lit review courses along with clinical skills. Then you have to come home to study. I have little time for my husband or myself.

For you it may just be a matter of studying harder or finding a better technique. You may need to study more than some others as you may have more riding on your academic success. Work hard, play less... but leave a little time for play. Good luck.
