Does anyone else find it VERY strange that DHA has decided to block the website "BING"?

I just got off CHAT with the DHA IT folks, and they said it was for security reasons.

I am trying to divorce my self from all things Google (since they control nearly all searched and most of email traffic and they have been caught several times controlling the narrative, blocking political search results, etc) and wanted BING as the home page (wonderful pictures daily...) and want to use Duckduckgo.

But BING is blocked. I find it strange that they would block BING and yet allow a clearly unethical Google to work freely in the system.

Bing is, in fact, garbage. And everyone is controlling your access to information. Not just Google. Let that stew in your paranoia for a while.

The do also have a budget for CME again. My last year on AD I successfully got them to pay for both a local conference and my subscription to PedsRAP for a total of about 2K without having to do too much work.

BING isn’t garbage.

Set them to your homepage for a week and look at it every day. Them come back and tell me if you liked it.

It does suck as a search engine though. I’m using DuckDuckGo. They don’t control my information.

I’m not paranoid. I have nothing to hide.

I just like freedom and free markets. I want the free market to decide that blocking search results based on a political agenda should have free market consequences.

That’s cool you are fine with socialism-like control. I don’t hold it against you.

Uhhh....so how long have you been in the military? Cmon, you know by now. The DoD is very much a socialistic totalitarian way of life...not exactly a 'free market'. You like Bing? so use your phone or personal laptop. I whip it out all the time (my phone that is).

You’re kidding/trolling right? Either way your post is awesome and adds some color to this wrecked and useless forum.

Mostly,

but I’m still baffled that it is a blocked website. of all the websites I can get on - I find it strange someone decided this one was a threat.

I can’t seem to access MCCareer.org from a DHA computer. The dude is now Deputy Corps Chief and his blog is all about professional development!

It's working for me

So is BING by the way.

We aren't officially DHA yet....but I thought our IT was already transitioned. Perhaps not

MEDCOM and now the DHA have been blocking iCloud access for years. They say it’s because of file sharing. Funny how I can access google drive from work without a problem. Also funny how I can access iCloud from Forscom computers (or at least I could last time I checked about a year ago)

You know what? Challenge accepted. I'll try it for 1 week. I'm not sure what you're supposed to do with it if you don't use it as a search engine....but we shall see.

Make sure you at least see it every day.

I’m curious the results. Thanks for taking the challenge.

Ok. I did it. 1 week of Bing as the homepage.

So, for starters, I agree that it’s got some benefits. It looks nice, that’s for sure. And the newsreel can be interesting. Certainly better than just browsing the front page of most American “news” sites if for no other reason than that it is more random and it doesn’t seem to have an obvious agenda. You click on it and it does a decent cross referenced search as well.

I guess part of my ignorance in the matter is that I spend so little time even interfacing with my web browser during a normal day that I wouldn’t use it very often unless I made myself do it ( like I did this week). But in that, of course, results may vary.

The other part of the ignorance was that I use google to search for $#!t. I never even considered that as my homepage it might serve some other function. I never asked it to do so, and I never needed it to do so. With all browsers now having a search tab, frankly I never cared what my homepage was. It may as well link directly to the terms of service for pornhub, because I will never look at it.

So I never realized that there was plausibly anything to miss. I don’t think I would notice from now on if my homepage changed to something other than Bing, but it was a nice little experiment and I can see the allure.

It still sucks as a search engine.

Well that’s all I wanted you to see.

I agree - sucks as a search engine.

The daily picture is really amazing. It’s worth looking at. You can also scroll back and see the pictures you missed and there is a little blurb about each picture. This is why it became my home page.

Then I started noticing the other thing you mentioned. I now love that feature. It’s a great way to get a snapshot of some news that seems important.

I bet if you kept it your homepage, you would really grow to appreciate the amazing photography each day.

By the way, it’s people like you that make me think we will be okay. Thanks for doing the experiment.
You were against Bing but you had the humility and curiosity enough to try something new. That’s something. Most would not.
