We used to have guys ride their motorcycles into work, but man they had a death wish. They would wait until they hit the bridge tunnel and then take those things up to insane speeds.

The first time you mistake going that fast is also your last.

Check out this guy's commute on a motorcycle, he probably shaved an hour off his commute. But holy ****, one of those cars makes an unexpected move and he would have been done. I think they should have separate roads for motorcyclists. Most accidents involving motorcycles are the fault of the other driver and not the motorcyclists. Knowing how many fools in NYC drive around while eating, drinking, shaving, applying makeup, feeding their kids, talking on their cell phones, texting, etc. There's no way I would get one. Maybe if I move to Texas or some other state with wide open roads, then I'd be more inclined to buy one.

Then again, the reason why so many people get them in the city is because of how much easier commutes would be, easier parking, etc.

I'd need to see stats to believe that. The majority of people I know who buy a motorcycle treat it like it's a license to switch any trip to "stunt mode." The number of tricks, speed limit violations, terrible driving incidents, etc, all make them highly susceptible to becoming pavement decoration.

The guys that ride my tail on the highway and then weave all around me to pass are what get to me. When someone has a bumper sticker saying "watch out for motorcyclists" I think of these nimrods trying to kill themselves at 120+/hr.

Something I noticed a lot around here is that people change lanes without looking or without signalling. Even if the motorcyclist is speeding, the driver of the car is supposed to pay attention to his mirrors. Now if the motorcyclist is not speeding, the most common accidents occur when a motorcycle is in the blind spot of a car, and the driver of the car shifts lanes.

Or if the motorcyclist is lane filtering (illegal in some states) during heavy traffic, and the car moves blocking their way.

When I was 16 and really young and stupid my friend and I took his dad's TT up to 130'ish on a dark road at night and almost hit a coyote. Probably almost died that night!

I hit 160 in a Honda. Quite glad there were no cops around.

What kind of Honda? Most Honda passenger cars have speed governor to top off around 130mph.

Are you in Canada... 160kmh?

Let alone I don't think Honda comes with 160mph rated tires.

Oh.. and at that kind of speed, the speedometer is a crapshoot...

Anyone who drives 100 mph+ on a public road where there is even a chance of someone else being around is a selfish hot dog ******* who deserves to be arrested and have their car impounded. Not to mention be held civilly and criminally liable for any injury, loss of life or property damage that they cause. No one NEEDS to drive that fast.

Government chips make cars top off.....

EDIT: Z beat me to it

Government chip is one of those things FBI implants on the back of your neck to track you. Now..Governor chip..

They should just change the law and allow unlimited speeds on certain roads, like Interstates and develop an Autobahn system like Germany (I know not all of it is unlimited speed.). Like, there should be a prerequisite that the road has 3 or 4 lanes for travel in both directions, with no pedestrians, no street lights, etc.

By the way Z and Lea, it's pretty easy to find a shop that removes the speed governor. The chip I installed in my car removed the 120 mph governor. I have no idea how fast it goes though, I'd expect around 165 mph to be the current top speed of my car. There's a stage 4 mod that came out that could allow me to enter the 200+ mph range.

Also the stock tires that come with cars might only be good until 130 mph, but you can just go on TireRack and buy better speed rated tires. For example, mines are W-rated, which corresponds to 168 mph. This means that at 168 mph, my tires will last for 15 minutes.

No chit.. it's not like I don't know that. That's why I asked what kind of Honda.

I don't get the obsession with fast cars.

On public roads, speed is a choice, not a limitation of your car. You can easily be a speedy and inconsiderate rocket in a Honda Civic.

Obviously, very few people race their cars on a track, so the 350hp is useless when you're faced with stop lights and speed limits.

If anything, the point of getting a fast car is simply the "oooo ahhh" value.

I'm not enamored with speed nor do I go beyond the speed limit very often. But more power in my opinion is safer than less in hands of safe and law abiding conscientious drivers.

That would be a ricer kit. That kit looks like a Cold Air Intake, not a Supercharger system. I've probably put in $3200 of upgrades into my car so far, such as an ECU upgrade, cold air intake, downpipe, coilover suspension, a German license plate, high performance winter and summer tires. (Volkswagen CC) The only idiotic part of this is that the car is a lease, I am way over-mileage (I'm allowed 45K miles, but I'm already at 41K miles and I have 15 months left on the lease.) So, I'm gonna end up buying out the car anyway.

Okay, not in, but on. It was a Honda sportbike, and it was a mostly-abandoned stretch of road in the desert. In my car I tend to drive exactly the speed limit, cuz I'm in no rush. On my bike I keep it between 65 and 70 (65mph speed limit) just to keep away from other cars.

I thought so... becareful man...

Actually agree almost 100%. Though I don't think 100 mph should be a magic cutoff. There's nothing inherently more dangerous about that speed. The problem is created when everyone else is expecting all the other cars to be going XX speed, and some people don't. Anyone who drives at a speed in excess of what is reasonable or prudent should suffer all those other things you said.

The motorcycle's actually locked away in storage now because I just don't have the time, energy, or need for it.

Yeah..those people merging into a 70mph interstate doing 40mph....wreaks havoc for big rigs who can't stop on a dime or have to change lanes.

For what it's worth, we learned from the MSF class that the most common motorcycle accident involves a motorcycle making an unprotected left turn behind another car and not being seen by oncoming traffic.

That seriously terrifies me. I stay as far away from the trucks as possible and let them do whatever they want.

I knew a girl who refused to drive faster than 55, no matter what. Going faster terrified her. So then she'd be going 55 and all the other cars would be flying passed her so she'd get even more terrified and slow down even more.

She should not drive.

She should not drive.

At least not on the highway. She might be better now, for all I know. Timid drivers sometimes scare me more than overly-aggressive ones.

How can you hit 160 in a Honda?

By going 80 and measuring your speed relative to the car traveling in the opposite direction at 80mph.

Or drive it off a cliff at a sufficient height to accelerate at 9.8m/s^2 until you hit 160mph and pray your terminal velocity due to wind resistance is not <160mph.

right? 😕

Never mind...

I went to this driving program sponsored by BMW one time where they have you drive full throttle at a bunch of cones, and at the last second the instructor tells you to swerve either left or right. My mistake was that I always tried to anticipate what the instructor was going to say, and when he saw me move the wheel either to the left or the right, he would shout the complete different direction.

Now, this girl that was in my class, she was so timid that she completely froze up, went into a state of target fixation, and drove straight through the cones.

ooh i wanna do this....i've seen then randomly, like they'll have you hydroplane on purpose, drive on 2 wheels, and do a full 180 at freeway speed.

or maybe i'm confusing two diff classes (defensive driving and hollywood stunt driving)

after moving to the east coast, i've learned to love ice/snow...i drive like a maniac in mall parking lots before they open, great training/fun

Yeah, they teach us on skidpads as well. Basically it's this giant plastic mat that they dump soapy water all over. And they have you going full throttle while your wheel is turned and you have to get yourself out of it.

Part of it is marketing for their 4-wheel drive cars and their braking systems (which are pretty damn good.) The course I did (emergency techniques, teenager program) was free, some years they decide to tour around in the summer going from city to city with the program. If you're above 21, they let you participate in the Susan Komen Drive for the Cure. Basically, they design a nice scenic/fun driving route, and let you take the car for a drive unsupervised. They have your license info so you're not gonna be able to steal it, and they tell you beforehand that if you get any tickets, its on you.

There used to be no age restriction but after a couple of 16 year olds crashed the M3s, they made some changes to it. There's also a full day or 2 day course that they teach down in South Carolina, that can cost up in the thousands of dollars.
