Destroyer says a dicarboxylic acid will readily lose water when heated if they can form 5 or 6 carbon ring...

What happens when they cannot form the 5-6 carbon ring...say like I have malaic acid - COOH - CH2- COOH...if I heat this what will happen..

Thanks...

I think that since the B-carbon has COOH it would be lost as CO2...
B-carbon having COOH is very unstable therefore it would be released as CO2..

Hope that helps..
