Did I do the right thing

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I'm a second year student. I was looking at my rotation schedule today and was wondering if I picked a bad sequence. First I have Family Practice for a month then I have surgery for two months. Was this a bad choice? I'm worried that I may be taking surgery too soon. What do you guys think?😕

Are you interested in surgery (or one of its subspecialties, like ortho/oto/uro)? Or are you just asking because the surgery clerkship grade is (reportedly) considered to be one of the more important grades?

Order of rotations is not that big of a deal. I came from a school where we had not choice in the matter and we all lived and thrived. Just do your best with each rotation as it comes and gain as much experience as you can. The role of a third year medical student is pretty much the same on any clerkship. Chill out and get the job done.

I'm having surgery first. I actually chose that rotation so that i'd have an easier time later in third year so i could study for step 2. I'm also assuming (perhaps mistakenly, but assuming anyway) that the residents and attendings know I'll be a brand-new third year and thus dumber than a box of rocks. This will hopefully be balanced out by the not-exhausted-from-other-rotations-yet glow of being in third year.

😀 Yeah, I'm probably dreaming. Sometimes a little delusion is a good thing.

I had surgery first and really liked it that way. I was excited and not yet burnt out, and afterward I appreciated the awesome hours of FM/psych when I may not have otherwise. I think you'll be pleased with your decision 🙂

family practice during the summer lets you still go out and drink and bbq and go to the summer festivals...enjoy that then hit surgery hard.

so, how's that working out for you so far?

(hi shyrem!)

hi noonday!!

I start on Monday, so I suppose so far it's working out great. 🙂 Went shopping today, got the rest my books today (casefiles, NMS surgery, a few others for other rotations). Gonna move into the student house probably tomorrow night or Sunday morning.

I started on FM and thought it was a great way to start the year. I happened to be at a site that gave me lots of autonomy, so I learned how to conduct a visit, write a note, present a patient and make a plan. This served me well for the rest of third year.

As far as surgery, everyone always talks about how you should have medicine first. I didn't, and I did just FINE academically on surgery. I was exhausted, cranky, and depressed - but not for lack of knowledge!
