Hi everyone...I would greatly appreciate someone else's interpretation of an email I just received from a pharmacy school. I'm currently in the waiting process of hearing back from schools. I just got verified on 2/28 from PharmCas(unfortunately, I had several transcripts and one of the schools didn't arrive until the beginning of february). Well I was looking at the website of one of the schools that I applied to, and it said I had to have all of my pre-reqs done by 7/1. Well I have 2 classes to take this summer and one ends 7/25. Its the only time being offered at my school. So I called the Rx school, to let them know this and see if I would still be considered. Well she told me, No, all of it has to be done by 7/1. Then she informed me that my application was already in the rejected pile, b/c I didn't meet the min GPA qualifications( I'm actually only 0.4 points away from the min! All b/c of the ridiculous pharmcas Calculations, which is no where near my much higher college GPA.) Then she told me that if I could send her an email showing that I could take the classes earlier and have everything completed by 7/1, then she would send my application back to the committee. I then asked, but if Im being denied b/c of my GPA, how would sending that email make the committee re-look at my application...She told me they could always make an exception. So when I got home, I started looking at every college in my city to find another class time...No Luck...yet. I then get this email from the school at 6pm. Of course its too late for me to call to ask them questions. I'm definitely calling tomorrow. But if someone, knowing my above background, can give their thoughts... does this email mean, they'll reconsider me after I submit my spring grades to PharmCas? or are they saying try again next year? The defer processing is a little confusing.

Here is a copy of the email:

After careful review of your application, the Admissions Committee has decided to defer processing your application at this time. We may however reconsider your application in the future and encourage you to continue to update the admissions office, via PharmCAS, of your academic progress.

Thank you for applying for admission and wish you every success in your future endeavors.

Sincerely,

Office of Admissions

I got a similar letter after my interview and recently got accepted so don't lose hope. Be persistent and try to find those classes some where

Maybe acing the summer classes could bring you to the minimum GPA. That being said how can your GPA be that low to begin with?

I'm actually taking spring classes, so it will bring it up(with pharmcas). My pharmcas overall came out to a 2.96. The school minimum is a 3.0. This is just so wrong on so many levels to me. Firstly, why not just round it to a 3.0? Is .04 points away really that far off to want to put me in the rejected pile? I was specifically told I didn't meet the min GPA. Second, this is my first time applying to pharmacy school. I wasn't familiar with the GPA calculations they did. My college transcript GPA is a 3.4. I really thought that is what they look at. But no, it's all about the Pharmcas Calculations. I actually made some Fs and a couple of D's my first year in college. I retook the courses and got As and Bs. Apparently, pharmcas takes the average of the two, which made my overall a 2.96. I retook the classes for a reason to get better grades, and I thought that is what would show on my transcripts. It seems like the schools don't care about my transcript at all.

I wouldn't even think about going to a school that would be that petty towards your GPA. Then again, I'm not the adcoms.

The other Gripe with PharmCAS is that they mess up school grade scaling if the school doesnt follow the +/- system.

For Example: NJIT does grading as A, B+, B, C+, C, D+, D, F and the corresponding GPA's would be a 4.0, 3.5, 3.0, 2.5, 2.0. 1.5, 1.0, 0.0

Pharmcas says Okay you went to NJIT have a ChemE degree good for you, your 3.5 on a B+ class is really a 3.3, a C+ is really a 2.3; Oh and there are no A- (3.7) or B- (2.7) to counter balance those so you automatically get scaled lower than you really are. For kids who have full academic career at a school that doesn't do +/- system their gpa calcualtion gets really screwed up.

If you're class ends the 25th, maybe you could ask your professor to take the final early and have them submit your grade earlier?

You should look into it, if the last final day of the semester is the 25th and that if your final would actually be earlier, I couldn't see why your professor wouldn't be open to helping your situation.

Thanks for the response. I just don't think the professor will be okay with me jumping ahead 25 days early. And I don't think I can cram for a final and teach myself all that material to take an exam by 7/1.

I totally agree! Its so screwed up...well for people like me anyway, that had to retake classes for a better grade. Pharmcas won't do any calculations until you submit your applications and pay. I was under the impression that I met the 3.0 min because of my college GPA. I wish I had applied to one school, got my calculations, then picked the rest of my schools based on the calculations. I applied to 10 schools all at once. 3 had 3.0 mins.

Thanks you're right. I actually found a school that offered the course I need early. Unfortunately its almost an hour away from my City, which I could do, but the 2nd class I have to take starts an hour after that one ends. So my schedule would be 9am-2pm, then 3pm to 9:30pm M-F. I also need to work to pay my bills, plus leaving time to study would be too hard. I have my summer schedule already made which has me ending 7/25, which allows me to work part time and study during the day. So I think I need to move on from this school...I applied to ten, and this was the only one with that requirement...
