I got my score back yesterday, and I was shocked. My real score was 10 points lower than my practice exam (AAMC 3~6) I think the reason was that the science sections on the practice exams were a lot easier than the real one. I usually got 12~ 15 on science sections and I got BS 9 and 11 PS on the real one. I’m planning to retake on July 2nd, and I was wondering does anyone have any suggestions for me?

Thanks

Well this is really encouraging to those of us who aren't getting in 12-15 range...

Wish I had some advice for you. This post just scares me

Oh now that I think of it- those exams are a lot easier (IMO). Maybe thats why...you still shouldn't have seen a score drop like that.

How was your VR? If you broke 30 I don't think you NEED to retake...unless your aiming higher

Nerves. Don't get nervous.

I need some time to think of some real advice as far as how not to get nervous

I agree. You didn't do well strictly because of nerves. Now what to do about it is something that will differ from person to person. What I can offer is that when one does badly due to nerves, the second test usually goes much better. You know what's coming, so it doesn't freak you out. Also, take AAMC 7-10 since they're more accurate than 3-6. That could be another factor in the large difference between practice test scores and actual.

If it makes you feel any better...almost all the successful docs I know have taken the MCAT 2-3 times. Messing up your MCAT 1-2 times doesn't mean you won't be a great doc.

One of them got 22, 24, then 30 and was accepted. Its more common than people realize

if you got a 30 already and 10+ on PS and VR, i wouldn't advise a retake if only one section is 9. Unless you're going for MD PhD I suppose.

nerves do factor into it a lot. but so does overconfidence. I felt SO good after walking out of my first MCAT - I think it was b/c I picked all the distracting answer choices and didn't think as critically as the MCAT requires.

best way is to forget you practice scores (no need for a false sense of security, anyone can do worse based on that one test day) - and just go in and do your best.

if you've done your best preparing, there's nothing more you can do

remembering that fact always helps me when i get nervous for tests (which is just about every one of them, so my technique is tried and proven).

as long as i've done whatever i could to prepare, then i just take the test and assure myself that i'll be happy regardless of the results (yea in an ideal world - i'd be happy with effort even if i failed the exam. but usually if i've prepared well enough, then i do just fine.)

also - don't assess how you're doing while you take the test and try to tally up how many you may have missed, etc. Just take it to take it. And don't think about what score you might end up with while reading a passage... haha (I had to catch myself from doing that multiple times)

Sorry, I wasnt trying to discourage anyone. Unfortunately, I didnt break the 30 mark and I kinda have to retake it. Perhaps, I was nervous during the test, but at the same time, my verbal was only a point lower than my average practice score.

Anyway, I think I will take everyone's advice, take more tests and try not to think to much. Other than that, I'm not really sure what more I can do.

I had the same problem. I took every AAMC practice exam and got scores ranging from 29-34, with an average of 32. I took the real exam and got a 26!!! I don't know what happened either. I also did the worse in what usually were my strongest areas! Nevertheless, I am re-taking the exam in July. I'm not really sure how to approach it differently.

Same for me. Practice AAMC Avg. ~35 real deal 30 but with an 8 in PS. How bad is an 8? My gpa is a below average 3.5. I scheduled for Aug. 6th but my advisor is trying to talk me out of it.

I agree that nerves can be extremely detrimental to test taking abilities, but I for one was much more nervous for my second exam BECAUSE I knew what to expect, and because of the added pressure of doing well... can't get away with not doing so well as much as the first time...

my words of wisdom... start using some relaxation techniques at least several weeks in advance... and do something that calms you down before the exam... go shopping, watch your favorite movie, music is magic (I literally felt myself getting calmer just by listening to Jason Mraz) don't force yourself to fall asleep if you can't, just let it happen, do something that usually puts you to sleep (read in bed, sometimes eating will make someone sleepy), and I don't think a glass of red wine will kill enough brain cells to affect your score :luck:
