Hello guys. This is my problem. Im going to finish taking chem this year. And the way it works out, i can only take bio the next year. And the year after that organic chem.

So it looks like this IF im lucky. I hate the quarter system, its so dumb because classes are only offered to start in the first quarter in my school.

Freshman- Chem
Sophmore- Biology
Junior- Organic chem

Or if i dont get into classes it knocks the bio and o chem down a level.

So my question is, im going to be able to take the dat after my junior year. Im worried by then, i'll have forgotten everything i learned in chem and biology from 1-2 years ago. Can anyone help me out if they've been in the situation?

A lot of people take these courses their first two years of college but do not take the DAT until late in their junior year. That is why there are so many study materials to help you refresh your memory on the subjects. Besides, hopefully by the time you take the DAT these courses will teach you have to study most effectively, so when you do start studying for it you will be able to retain much of what you study relatively quick.

More of it will stick than you think. When you eventually study for the DAT, it wall draw it all out from the depths of your brain.

I just finished taking biochem 1 and it was a great way to bring the basics back of cell bio, gen chem 2, and a little o chem. I am taking the DAT this Summer, I just finished my Jr. year and have not taking gen chem since freshman year either so I think its a common situation for a lot of people

I'm a non-trad, so I took bio and ochem in the year before I took the DAT. But I hadn't had gen chem in 9 years!! Also, a year's worth of biology doesn't even begin to scratch the surface of the scope of questions you will see. I managed to pull off 21/20/25, just study your butt off!! You can do it!

My advice would be take the DAT as early as you can. More you wait, the less material you remember from Ochem or Chem. However, take as much Bio classes as you can because Bio questions on the DAT is very random and i never felt ready for it.

im not sure what high school yellowishbluish went to...

but I found that if you're some kind of science major, a ton of the basic topics will be repeated over and over again in your classes. by the time you get around to studying for the DAT, there will be lots of things that you've repeated so many times that you won't need to study. that will leave room for the thousand other things that you don't have nailed down that need more of your attention and brain power 🙂

good luck

Just make sure you actually study the material now; cram all you want for other courses, but don't cram for DAT courses. If you study the material and get the concepts, then, well... yes, you will absolutely forget a lot of the material by the time you take the DAT. But it will come back very, very easily if you really studied it well. Everyone forgets material and has to review it for the DAT, but you don't really "unlearn" anything, you just lose some of the details.

Hi,
I was a biology major in college. I took my chem classes freshman year and my organic chem my junior year. I didn't end up taking my DAT till a year out of college....and the kaplan/barron's book did its job to cover the content. Don't worry about forgetting things...I'm sure you will but things will also come back to you as you study!
