Still making up my mind as to take calc or not, I will have time in my sched. this spring if I wan to take it. What are your thoughts, important to take calculus? Also, answer the poll if you would!

Surprised to see so many people that took calculus and recommend it. Would you care to share why since I am making my decision for next semester soon? Thanks!

Some schools have Calc/College Math listed under the recommended section. I'm not sure how much it'll help for the QR, but if you like math, it might be a good class to take.

It is required by several schools. Here's a list of schools that require/recommend calc:

Required:
Boston University Goldman School of Dental Medicine
Harvard School of Dental Medicine
University of Mississippi School of Dentistry (or college algebra and trig)
Stony Brook University School of Dental Medicine
Virginia Commonwealth University School of Dentistry (or statistics)

Recommended:
University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine
University of Alabama School of Dentistry

I have no knowledge of Calculus whatsoever. Never took it in high school, won't take it in college. I hate math. 😀

I did cause I thought I might want med school but it wasn't worth it you don't need it

I'm a hardcore Chemistry major and they make all of us hardcore kids take Calc 1 and 2 if we want to graduate.

I doubly met my undergraduate requirements of Calculus through AP and dual credit courses from high school so I actually haven't taken Calc. in college. That being said, I have yet to have found a need for it at this point in my degree and I'm in the last year of my biochem degree.

I am however currently in an upper level Stats class due to the dental schools I'm interested in requiring it for the 2012 matriculating class and I feel like prior stats exposure would have been more useful than the calculus I had in high school. Then again there are a lot of things I could have done better about high school. Lol

It's a required course for most of the science programmes here at U of T. No choice. Also ended up taking a smaller seminar style one where it was three 2-hour classes a week. Brutal.

Same at Georgetown. A year of calculus is required to get your degree in science.

Calculus does not help at all for QR. I would still recommend it, as many schools require at least Calc I.
I also needed to take Calc I and Calc II or Introductory Statistics to obtain a biology degree at my school.

I took it and got my worse grade in college for it.

On the one hand, I'm glad I took it because it's a pretty heavily recommended or required course for dschools but on the other hand, that fugly grade on my transcript isn't doing me any favors.

I therefore don't know if my taking calculus was a good or a bad move. I would say though if you suck at math and your college's calculus class is known for giving out a large amount of bad grades, you should really heavily consider it before signing up.

i took calc I and II and recommend it for a few reasons 1.) helps with QR on the DAT 2.) it has helped me to do well in physics (so far) with manipulating equations as calc generally begins by reviewing and utilizing algebra and 3.) it is a requirement for some of the dental schools and 4.) is a general good course to have (looks good on the app since its a relatively challenging course to take, etc.).

I took three semesters of calc and it changed my life. Calc I, II, and III were fantanstic courses that challenge you to think about the world in a different way. It takes what would be crazy complex into a function that can be quantified and manipulated. Go for calculus and experience the joy and the power of mathmatics and see how it has changed the world.

Before you start the class - like on your break or something - read about the history of calculus and types of problems it was developed to solve.

From a practical stand point it is good because it will allow you to really understand physics concepts.
