What is the pay scale when comparing small community hospitals to major trauma centers or academic medical centers?

What is the pay and benefits like in each place, where is it better?

I am from chicago, so if any of you are familiar with places like Rush North Shore Medical Center(trauma II), Lutheran General(trauma I), Resurrection, Condell, and then all the academic centers...what is the difference is pay and hours/benefits, if any?

Thanks

Pay varies quite a bit depending on particular circumstances. However, in general private jobs pay better than academic jobs. Benefits often better at academic jobs, but not necessarily a big difference depending on what your private job situation is like.

Unless you're actively job hunting, I wouldn't spend any time worrying about it right now. Things can change quite a bit between now and then.

Also, in the Annals a month or two ago they published the most recent salary survey which showed that the salary gap between academic and private were not as great as in Int Med for example. The greatest variations were regional by far.
