different suit color

ok, at my interviews i have been the only one wearing a suit that is not dark dark colors. yet, i feel like it is appropriate none the less... it is a beige/tan pinstriped anne klein pant-suit (not dark, but not before labor day light). i wear a dark brown collared shirt underneath. i am hoping to get some feedback, cause people on this forum say black/grey/blue suits. although my suit color was not the same as everyone elses.. isn't that ok if it looks professional?

I wouldn't worry about it much, as long as it is a suit
In a way, you did stand out, but not in bad way, so don't worry about it.

I think your suit color is just fine...at least for the summer/autumn. People tend to wear darker colors in the winter -- I think this looks more appropriate. But what do I know? Good luck with your interviews! :luck:
 
If it makes you feel anybetter, I am wearing a black suit, but hate not standing out a bit, so I wear a very vivid purple shirt and tie. I think it is good to have something that sets you apart from the rest of the group on your interview day.
 
I hate when women wear dark suits to interviews. Sure, it looks professional, but so do a lot of other choices for women.

Men are kinda stuck in the navy/black/gray territory. Show up in a purple suit with yellow shirt and I think you may get the wrong kind of attention. 🙂 But I love when I see women wearing a white/black floral blouse, or tan suit, or hell... anything with a little color in it. Shows some individuality and personality. For the same reasons, I like when I see guys with a bright orange tie or pink shirt under their suit (no, I'm not gay 🙂 ) instead of the white or light blue with red/navy stripe tie or similar.
 
I wish I could have found a nice brown suit. That's what I was looking for to begin with. I ended up with black bc I really liked the skirt but I'm sure being a little different is a good thing.

When i interviewed, I didn't wear a black suit. I had a green one, a red one, and a grey one. Every interviewer shook my hand and thanked me for NOT wearing black/blue - and then went on for a minute or two about how utterly depressing seeing all black or all blue was. Made for an interesting beginning to the interview; it also made the interview more relaxed and personable.

I think more than anything, you need to be comfortable in the suit you wear. Wear it like you wear them every day. Like you can give a speech or bake a cake and be equally comfortable. If you look uncomfortable about your suit choice, it will show. And not in a good way.

You'll be fine. Enjoy your interviews. 🙂
 
Glad to read your post, ShyRem...I am interviewing at UNECOM on Tuesday, and figured I would bust out the navy blue suit, thinking that east coast = conservative. I hate that suit though, so perhaps I'll sport my heather grey one instead.

PS I am sooooo excited for this interview! It is more than double the traveling distance to any other school I applied to, and I'm spending about $500 to go. Okay, I'm excited for the trip, but nervous for the interview. Ahoy, Maine 😀 Sorry, all, just had to get that out.
 
TeaKae, I interviewed at UNECOM couple weeks ago and the dean even said that "I am glad everyone got the memo about wearing DARK suits" and I don't think she was joking!
So stick with the dark at least for UNECOM. By the way it's a great school I found out yesterday that I got in! It's in a small town but It’s absolutely gorgeous and worth $500 traveling cost!
 
Male non conformist here: tan vested suit with soft lime, blue, or pink shirts, bright solid color ties, a tie clip to keep it out of the soup during lunch. Most of the other interviewees wore depressing shades of black, grey, and blue. The interviewers at most of my schools wore "business casual". Dress naturally, be comfortable in your skin, project confidence. You're there because the school considers you an excellent candidate, on paper. The interviewers want you to succeed. So go in and show them you're a courageous individual, not a copy cat who dresses in black because other premeds do. Good luck!

Was that Dean Kelley? She was joking. Trust me. Every week we all joke around (Dean Kelley included) that they should give automatic acceptances to anyone brave enough to NOT wear a blue/black suit.


TeaKae, best piece of advice I can give you: wear something you are comfortable in. Not something that says "OMG I'm in a med school interview and this is the only suit I've ever even TOUCHED!" Be comfortable in your suit no matter the color. Be professional. Be you. :luck:
 
well thats encouraging...I always feel like a complete outcast for not wearing a black suit...but at least i know that i couldnt show up to a funeral in what i'm wearing. Mine is a tweed type design from Ann Taylor...AND its a skirt suit (how riske). I got into DMU in it, and people also commented on how there were only 2 of us in non-black. I figure, as long as you look professional, thats all that matters. I also feel like standing out a bit (in a good way) makes you memorable. Though I feel a bit like a First Lady sometimes...lets hope that its not a Mrs. Bush kind of first lady...
 
for one of my three interviews, and I ended up getting accepted to all the schools I interviewed at, even though one was a seat for next year. I hate monotony, try something different. Good luck everyone.
 
I hate monotony too, but to be honest, I look like a freaking pimp daddy in my black suit with a white shirt and tie.

My personal opinion is to stick to only traditional interview dress (black,grey, etc..) You want to stand out because of your interviewing skills and stats not because you tried to be a trend setter. No offense meant, but it's just not the time.

Well, the only suit I'm really comfy in is a sweat suit. Think that'll be ok?:laugh:

Thanks, btw. I really liked the school...wish I would have had more time to explore the area, but I got to walk in the ocean for the first time in about 5 years. 🙂

PS. My interviewers only asked me a handful of questions (4-5). I am thinking that is either a really good or a really bad thing. I couldn't really read anything from their facial expressions, etc. Thoughts on this?
Ugh. The waiting and anticipation sucks.
