Why does unpolarized monochromatic light falling on 2 polarizers whose axes are perpendicular to each other preclude any light transmission through the set up?

One filters the vertical components of light and the other filters horizontal components of light. This ultimately filters out all of the incident light.

This video on polarized light can explain the concept.
