I've shadowed here and there(1 day per office), but spent the majority of my time volunteering at a free clinic employed by one dentist. He's notorious at the clinic for being rude to patients and staff and is a really tough fellow to communicate with, but I stayed there at the free clinic because I got to observe a lot of different cases and actually do hands-on work.

I posted something about this before, but I left school for the summer to go home(out-of-state) and completely forgot about getting a LOE from a dentist. I've submitted my application in May, took the DAT in June, and have 3 professor LOEs. I emailed him in May, but received no reply. I'm going to call him at the clinic next week, but even if he is willing to help me out by filling out a LOE, I'm afraid that it won't be all that great.

Does anyone have any good advice as to what you would do if you were in this situation?

Oh man! i'd forget about him. He might not give u much credit (his LOE might not carry much weight) sounds like he didn't even try to know u (vice versa) BUT hey! nothin tried nothin done right?🙂 Give him a call--wat the heck.

You should give it a try and ask him. If you apply to schools without that letter, you're going to get asked why you didn't get one... If you're really worried, you can ask if he's willing to let you read it before he sends it out. Also, when you're asking if he'll write you one, try asking if he'd be able to write you a "strong letter of recommendation." You'll find that people tend to be honest and he may actually say no if he can't write you a strong one.

I tried really hard to get through to the guy. I know everything about him including what his wife and kids do, how he came to be a dentist, what he likes to do on his free time, and various other stories about his life.

Every time I tried to slip in something about myself, he would automatically cut the conversation off.

He's a pretty difficult person to deal with but I got a lot out of volunteering at the free clinic. I was told he was off on vacation and will be back next week, so I'm just going to have to go for it even it it won't be a strong letter since something is better than nothing.
