I was wondering how many students with average statistics, lor, a DO, and a love for pathology dont get a position in pathology(ie chicagoland area applications). I was told path isn't a hard match, but this is a good place to ask.

Also, does doing 2 years of research without getting a degree or papers count as research to residency directors?

Thanks

Mark

You should have no problem matching as long as you do not limit yourself to only a few programs. If you only apply to "Chicagoland" area I would say you definately increase your risk. If you spend some time in a rotation at the programs you are interested in attending you would greatly increase your chances.

My program took multiple DOs this year. All were great candidates and they were given the same consideration as the MD applicants. I can't say for sure all programs will be like ours, but I don't believe the prejudices in allopathic medicine against DOs is that significant anymore.

Your research will help, but it is too bad you didn't get any publications. Though most entering path residents don't have any research experience. This varies from institution to institution though.

Good luck.

do chooser, 40-50 spots go unmatched every year. You may not get your #1 choice if it is a prestigous program you are targeting, but every US grad and every IMG who speaks decent english and has passed the usmle will get a spot....somewhere. Don't worry about it.

I agree with the above sentiments. You should have no trouble matching particularly if you are an American medical graduate with a decent academic record.
