hi, i'm a newbie interested in getting started in digital SLR photography, esp for cases and such. What cameras/lenses are you guys using?

My fellow residents and I use Nikon D80's with a sigma 105mm macro lens. We got our camera packages from Lester Dine (dinecorp.com) for around $2100... it included a low profile macro flash (really nice, considering most are tall or bulky), a personal lens for regular photography, as well as other accessories like mirrors, retractors, and a dental photo guide.

i have a Nikon D40x. i have the stock lens, but plan on upgrading to a 50 mm VR lens soon...

let me warn you- there is not much free time for photography during dental school, but the camera has taken some nice "photos" on the weekend trips my classmates and i go on.

-Hup!

One more note... if you don't want to invest in a $2k camera, you can get away with a simple point and shoot camera. I used a Nikon Coolpix L4 while in dental school and achieved excellent case presentation photos... just know your camera and how to use its macro mode. When taking close up or intraoral shots, I put a few pieces of semi-opaque scotch tape over the flash to diffuse it a bit.

I think you should just jump the gun and get a Nikon D3. I am already considering one myself!!!!

As for lens, get a super wide and a super telephoto. Something like a 16mm-55mm and a 75mm-300mm combo with vibration reduction.

👍

I have a Sigma 105mm Macro on my D50 and they sell these at EVERY scientific session. Personally, I think this lens is crap. Focus is slow and hunts a lot. I don't know why they sell this lens at so many dental vendors, but I would just stick with whoever makes your camera, in this case NIKON.
