Hi Everyone,

I have to admit that this story is funny, but the fact that it is true actually makes it pretty sad. My mother is heavy marijuana smoker, and she smokes several times a day. This has been going on since I was born. I am starting medical school in August, and am spending the summer in my mother's house. I have no choice...she is my mother and I cannot chose my own mother, especially since I was raised by her.

I have read in some places that heavy exposure to second hand marijuana smoke can cause one to test positive in a drug test.

My question is:

Did anyone have to take a drug test (eg. urine or hair sample) during orientation for medical school? Did they have to provide a sample prior to arriving? Did anyone have to do this before starting clinicals? Any advice for me? Would it be ******ed to explain this situation if I had tested positive?

Thank you.

Starting next year, every med student at my school will get tested at the beginning of the school year. Basic urine sample test.

If you tested positive, it sure would make for one interesting conversation with the dean. But if your mother is willing to corroborate your claims I don't see how it would progress past the initial meeting.

Can anyone give me a serious answer? any drug tests during medical school?

I hope my school has no drug tests otherwise I'm seriously f**ked.

I think everybody in the history of drug tests who tested positive has had a similar BS excuse. Supposing your mother's really a pothead and she corroborates the story, it doesn't prove you didn't spend the summer toking out with her. Anyway, you should check with your particular school whether they even require a drug test. If so, be a grownup and get an apartment. And quit being an *******.

My school doesn't drug test, and there has been no talk of requiring drug tests.

I agree with the poster above about getting your own apartment if possible.

If that isn't an option, vacate the area anytime your mother lights up. Avoid the 2nd hand smoke as best you can. Same concept used by asthmatic children or spouses who live with smokers. Same concept used by folks with allergies who visit "cat people".

If you're ever trapped with your mother as she smokes, do what Bill did- don't inhale.

Is your mom hot?

:corny:

Hell, just blaze one with her, then blame it on second-hand. You've already got an excuse, exploit that ****! Maybe then you could mellllllooooowwww out man, and wouldn't be a prick when someone gives you the ****ing answers to the questions you ask.

:laugh::laugh::laugh:👍
yeah, i thought the initial answer was pretty good and 'serious'

to the OP. listen to everyone else. don't hang around yer ganja mom and ask your school yourself.

I don't see anything wrong with marijuana. However, it is illegal, and med schools aren't likely to look the other way if they find out you have it in your system (first or second hand). Wise up...stay clear of your mom when she's smoking. You must be high if you're going to risk your career on staying in the room with mom while she's toking up.

So, some questions....

When you say that you'll be living with your mom before you start med school, you make it sound like you'll be living there ONLY for the summer...but that you'll be on your own after med school starts. Is that not the case? Will you be living with your mother DURING med school as well?

Because, otherwise, why do you care if they test you before starting clinical rotations? If you won't be living with her during med school, then why should it even matter? 😕

To answer your question: No, I did not have to do a urine test for drugs before starting clinical rotations. I only had to do a criminal background check.

However, I DID need a urine drug test before starting my PEDS rotation. A lot of pediatric hospitals require a clean urine drug test before you start working there.

Don't smoke pot. And stop hiding behind the "my mother smokes pot!" excuse if you are smoking pot.

my school also doesn't test (in the heart of conservative Alabama) niether does my gF school (ivy league in the northeast); beside Adderal and drunk driving is a bigger problem than weed in medical school so just drink plenty of water go to a hippie cigar/bong store of some kind and get a cleanser if it will make you feel better and spend time with your mom while you can🙂

Have your mom bake the stuff into bread or smoke outside.

the only school i know that drug tests pre-marticulation is Washu, and they TELL you this when you start the secondary. besides that, some people need to stop being so holier than thou, it is not the worst thing in the world for someone to smoke weed the summer before med school, or even during med school, as long as it doesnt interfere with patient care. i dont smoke, but i dont see why it should matter.

I don't think anyone is being holier than thou on this thread. Yes, A couple of schools do test, either at the admission or clinical stages. Other places will check prior to licensure. The issue has nothing to do with your view on marijuana, it has to do with whether you use an illegal substance. Statistically more people who test positive for marijuana will also try harder drugs, which is why it is often referred to as a "gateway" drug. Folks who are willing to break one drug law are more likely to break others than folks who have never used. And since you eventually will be in a position where you will have access to meds, and because the profession does have a substance abuse problem (related to this level of access), it's pretty reasonable to test folks. As for blaming a positive test on second hand smoke, that is not going to fly -- folks could claim this whether it is true or not. And your mom is never a convincing source of corroboration (along with spouse that is the person most likely to lie for you).

And even then, it's a saliva test (catches you if you've smoked in the last 24 hours). And from what I understand, there're no more tests. I think they want to see if you can go a day without toking, and then they figure if you have a problem it'll come out in your grades.

Wow, really? A good number of the peds residents/attendings I've seen are so obviously stoners it's not even funny. Moreso than in other specialties. Maybe it's just self-selection of the laid back attitude.
