So I found this very weird and off putting and am wondering if I'm just being weird here or if I should maybe take some kind of "action"...

So I looked up a certain school's location on Instagram to look at pictures posted at the campus. I found one post from a visiting speaker apparently on campus to address their premed student body. The picture was a generic selfie and the caption was:

"Ready to educate the poor minds of XXX's pre-med [class]." (actual post said "clasd")

I thought that seemed a little weird/harsh so of course I went snooping... Apparently this person is a faculty member at another school in the same state and has their occupation listed on Facebook as "Director of Admissions at [other state school]"

This seems like wildly inappropriate behavior at best and a legitimate ethical violation at worst. Also all these social media profiles were public. It definitely left a sour taste in my mouth associated with the school this person is employed at. I plan on applying to both of these schools and it is not comforting to think that this person will be responsible for reviewing my app some day.

What do you all think?

That is appalling. I don't see it as an ethics violation but I am interested to think of why you think that it is? Is it illustrating a prejudice against the students at that school (they have poor minds?). I hadn't read it that way at first but I can see that interpretation of the message.

Yes.. I guess "ethics violation" was a poor choice of words. "Conduct violation"? Not sure.. but, yes, I did kind of interpret this caption in a way that would imply that this person would hold some unfair prejudices in their review of applications... Just doesn't quite sit right with me, especially since as I stated above, they might be reviewing my app in the near future.

Definitely doesn't seem appropriate but is the account potentially one the poster uses for friends and family only (despite it being public)? They could have meant it as a humble joke, like "these poor people have to listen to me". I could imagine it being an older person not knowing how to use social media very well. And maybe they were not aware of how their joke could be taken out of context.

How is this a conduct violation??????????

Poor taste, yeah.

Could have been their intention, but they're not "older" by the looks of it. Also in the comments they referred to the school of medicine they were visiting as a "horrible place."

The only positive spin I can think to put on it is maybe school rivalry jokes? It just seems so weird to see someone publicly touting themselves as a director of admissions for one school bashing another school so publicly.

Fair enough.. like i just mentioned above, it's just not a good look (my opinion, obviously) to be bashing another school in a public forum while you proudly advertise yourself as a "Director of Admissions" at another school.

Maybe it was a poor attempt at a joke about the rival school. I can see why adcoms shouldn't show any preferences/favoritism but it could be a simple joke that definitely wouldn't be seen that way to premeds at the other university applying to his/her school.

Attitudes like this can be reflective of the culture of her school. Bad sign.

It was a tasteless thing to say, but if you can't handle that without going full nuclear then residency is gonna destroy you. Dial down the outrage, and choose wisely when deciding which hill to die on.
And definitely stay out of New York City, where we use the term "F you" as a greeting

Funny stereotype, but I've been to new york many times and found the people to be very friendly. 9/11 changed the culture, or so i'm told.

I lived there after 9/11. They still use **** you as a greeting, they just smile when they say it now.

I couldn’t help but laugh out loud as I’m reading this on the 1 train filled with people.

Goro, I think you just gave away your location unless you grew up there or you used to live there at one time or another.

Poor taste and rude, maybe, but not unethical.

My guess is it was a jokingly-intended dig at the other school, not its students themselves (as an example— Michigan fans may “hate” Michigan State, but I sincerely doubt their admissions staff, no matter how much they love their own team, would actually hold it against applicants from “across enemy lines”)
