I'm currently a sophmore at UCSD (Revelle), and I'm majoring in Biology.

I had a rough freshman year and my cum. and sci. GPA = 2.7 ~ 2.9. UCSD is known for its Bio. department and as one of the better UC for sciences.

I'm aiming for medical school, but I'm seriously discouraged. I know how competitive the medical application process is in general (not just in my school, where everyone practically is planning on becoming a doctor or something in the medical field), and I'm afraid and seriously discouraged. Does my situation seem bleak? Any advice or experience to save me from developing an ulcer 20 years too early?

I had a 2.7 at the end of my sophomore year, and got a 4.0 junior and senior year, and wound up with a cGPA of 3.3, and a 38S MCAT. Im not applying this cycle, ill be taking time off to do research and go abroad. Its doable, just put your mind too it, and pretend like the past never happened. Act like its day 1 and get pumped up.

Hrm, something tells me your discouraged...

Well obviously, your going to have to your best on your way out of Revelle. Get A's, not B's because for right now B's stand for Bad. Drop extracurriculars, drop social gatherings, drop what you have to drop to increase your GPA. Now is not the time to be taking nuclear physics because you always wanted to learn about it because of a special feature on the Discovery Channel.

If you graduate with a 3.0+ you can apply for post-bacc programs. It isn't the end yet because you can still graduate with a 3.5gpa or higher if you take a 5th year (which I recommend).

Dude. 🙁

- more complex thoughts to follow after my 1350mg of caffeine have a chance to kick in-

I had a 2.9 after 1 semester, and ended with a 3.75. You still have plenty of time to bring your GPA up as a sophomore. You just have to decide you want a 4.0 and make that your priority.

Don't become a hermit, but if there's a test on Monday, you might be better served not getting plastered over the weekend, or going to the lake all weekend.

Or, asking that one person out before the test that decides to reject you in a subtle way that doesn't give a concrete answer and makes you begin to think about questioning whether they really like you or not so you begin to talk to them more and they begin to realize that they do like you a bit but you feel that they don't like you enough to actually get into a relationship but moments after that thought they do something that shows that they are interested to some degree and you continue to talk but then get stuck in the friend zone without knowing it and by the time you realize this your grades have ****ted on themselves.

Hypothetically.

ugh, I feel you on that one. 😳

I stayed single through the majority of undergrad. Less stress. The occasional date is always fun, and if you ever find "the one", by all means jump on it. But, I never had to worry about making sure I was spending enough time with anyone, or whether I was gonna piss anyone off.

I'd recommend it.

That means no, you shouldn't have obsessed over it beyond that.

Maybe you just don't know how to ask women out. I got rejected like crazy freshmen and sophomore year, then I learned from the best, and man were junior and senior year enjoyable. Seriously dude, just read up and practice. You can't learn to play women overnight.

That's ridiculous, alcohol is an integral part of doing well on tests.

I felt the very same way a few years ago. I had a terrible cumulative GPA (~2.7) for my fresh/soph years. I got really discouraged, and even one of the advisers at my school told me to consider another career. I brought my GPA up to 3.4 which is on the lower end for accepted medical students but at least I'm in the running. I ended up graduating with honors.

If you're serious about medicine, you can do the same. If you have some good explanations about why you did poorly when you started college, it might help. I'm a non-trad and first generation college student, to make a long story short.

I wish you luck!

The story was a bit extrapolated for giggles but I thank you for the positive vibe. I see you, Playa.

to satosekai-your situation does not seem bleak! you still have time to raise your gpa! the fall quarter has just started so you can still do well in your bio/chem/physics classes!

it's great that you're realized your situation right now before it's too late! you should be more encouraged and motivated to study harder and get As in your science classes!

yea getting a 3.5 gpa and above is favored but also doing well on the mcat is also crucial! even if you don't raise your gpa up to 3.5 as long as you can get your mcat score to 35 or beyond, you should be fine (who knows? you might be great at taking this test)! so don't give up and take this opportunity to change and excel at UCSD 👍
