Have any of you experienced this?

Without expelling too many details, I've recently felt somewhat bullied by a particular school and I have reason to believe it is because of something that is out of my control. Regardless, this school made a huge error and when it was brought to light, they acted immature and particularly rude about it...

Anyway, it's terrible because I'm still in the process of applying to this school so I can't really say anything which makes it very hard. Of course, if I don't get into this school they can be sure I'll speak out and expose them. They picked the wrong girl to mess with.

Just wondering, have any of you taken **** for a med school? You don't have to give details, but just generally....I'm curious.

The thing is, we're all people and just because we're all desperate to get into medical school, it doesn't mean that we should be treated badly by a school, or made to feel like we're less than human.

Without knowing the details of situation it's hard to judge, but if you feel that you were treated unfairly by the school for circumstances beyond your control (emphasis on the last part) then you should speak up right away. If it's something like "I thought I deserved an interview...I have a 40 MCAT!" then you don't have much of a leg to stand-on, but if you were the victim of discrimination then it's probably worth speaking up.

We're all human, and so are the admissions staff. They may be rude or act distastefully because they're overworked or they've had a bad day. If you pointed out their error, I could see how you might elicit a defensive response. If it's true discrimination, you should definitely make some noise.

I'm curious to hear what the situation was. Maybe you could PM me the details?

Don't be a slacker😡. You know that if you tried you could be more vague.

yeah, i know it's hard without details. I just don't feel comfortable saying anything at this time....we'll see what happens....

I was just wondering if anyone has felt like they were discriminated against during the application process....

All I can recommend is that you take this all in stride...

regardless of whether you were discriminated against or not, if you have gone through proper channels and brought this issue to the medical school's attention and your concerns haven't been addressed to your satisfaction, you won't get anywhere by making yourself looking like a trouble-maker...

At this point you need to consider the following:

if the school has treated you badly during the application process, is this the type of institution you want to attend for the next 4 years?

given that schools do occasionally talk (given enough reason) would making a fuss hurt or help my situation?

Yeah, I agree with you. Thanks for the feedback!

I'm just curious about the details, although, if you elaborate you will most likely be chastised by half the members on this forum.

You should decide yourself, objectively, if this is something worth making a fuss about. Ask yourself, if I were in this situation under X and Y conditions would this still make me angry? Could this have been a misunderstanding? Did someone have a bad day? None of us are great all the time, and it is entirely possible that you caught an overworked group of individuals (or single individual) on a very bad day.

Good luck.

I think all of us have felt discriminated in some capacity over this process. That is how it works. We are all judged on MCAT Score, Major, GPA, State Residency, Undergrad, EC's. If you were discriminated against because of something you can't help, i.e. age, race, gender, sexual orientation, than you have a legitimate argument. But like stated earlier, without details we have no may of understanding your situation.

if you have a legitimate legal argument, you should probably take action against the school. every school takes precautions to prevent discrimination against race, gender, and sex. if you think there was a real violation, you should probably not wait until you get the final decision - that shouldn't play a role in whether you decide to speak out about it.

I'm not trying to support the 'white coat community' or whatever it's called where MD's cover each other's asses. But do realize the implications of your actions, accusing a school of discrimination is a HUGE deal for the school and could ruin someone's administrative career for making a comment that came out the wrong way.

Put yourself in their shoes - however-many thousand applicants, hundreds of interviews, phones never stop ringing for people asking for status checks even though they know there's no real chance of a change. If it was something stupid, I would let it go. If it was something actively malicious, then I think it's time to think about standing up.

having an administrative career is no excuse for bad/offensive behavior. the question comes down to whether the offense was real. the OP gave no details so it's up to her to decide.

Yeah, sorry I'm being so vague -- ultimately, I don't let things get to me too much but maybe this affected me greatly because it had to do with my future in medicine, which I feel very strongly about. Granted, the offense wasn't stated outright, nobody said "We're not accepting you because of your race" or anything like that....so maybe it's just my failure to recognize the way in which the whole thing occured. Still, I feel as though if someone is treated unfairly, one shouldn't gloss over it just because they're wanting to be accepted to some school.

Thanks for all your feedback, I guess I'll just forget about it for now. Other thoughts are appreciated.

Quite frankly just based upon your statement here, I'm thinking it isn't really a big deal.

You can't be REALLY offended if you are still pursuing your application there. Furthermore waiting until "you don't get in" and exposing them is just going to make you less credible since it will come off as sour grapes.

Its either deal with it now or let it slide IMO.

Of course we don't know the whole situation so this is mostly based upon speculation.

Was it based on race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, religion or age?

I feel like unless it's one of the above which are generally covered under labor regulations, it's not a legitimate discrimination complaint.

👍

I felt discriminated against because of my "third leg"
