Disliking Bio and Chem and Being a Doctor

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
When do you shadow?

The pharmacy I called said they need to wait to let me shadow until they've gotten all their requests from the pharmacy school students. (I thought shadowing was for pre-pharm students specifically for the purpose of finding out whether they'd like going to pharmacy school, but I guess I was wrong). And I followed up with the hospital about the messages I left and they told me they "forwarded my request to the appropriate people". Grrrrrrrrrrrr.

Btw, noworkhistory (I think I will ditch the "OP" name since we are friends now), I think I kind of like you. You have been a great sport while taking all of our heat and you have been quite the source of entertainment for me over the past few days. Friends?

I'll consider it. Depends on what kind of entertainment I've provided you with, Ie, the "laugh with" or "laugh at" kind. I'm not up for being the "laugh at" kind of entertainment. I'm sorry. I just can't. Otherwise, oh fo sho.

I'm the opposite. Like all the BCPM pre med stuff, not a big fan of upper level sciences. Too boring an starts getting less and less objective

YES! This thread is finally back!!!

OP, I think that the laughter has been a mixture of both. Where have you been these past weeks?

Hopefully falling in love with science classes... But no seriously, I got a little giddy when I saw this thread back up.

Oooooooooooooooohhhhhh, Jesussss......I thought we had an agreement on the "OP" usage......oh jeez.......

Honestly I've been checking out some libertarian-socialist views and dropping all my science classes in favor of some macroecon, philosophy and sociology classes. That's kind of why I started my other (newest) post, because despite all that, those things in my newest post just keep bringing me back to medicine. But first before I make ANY career decisions, I want to know why collective ownership of the means of production can't happen in a non-command, non-communist economy. (Obviously Ludwig von Mises' arguments about socialism clearly show the impossibility of the collective ownership of the means of production in a command economy, but he says nothing about non-command economies, at least to my current knowledge). The reason I want to know about that first before I make any further career decisions is because if such an economy is indeed possible, then I'm going to become a public intellectual or something on the topic, because such an economy would need to exist in order for me to be able to sleep at night with all these individuals and families here and abroad that would be suffering more or less simply and/or largely because of capitalism's private ownership of the means of production.

That's where I'VE been.....glad everyone enjoyed this thread so much!

OP, you've alluded to your mental health issues in several posts. Since this is an anonymous internet form, please enlighten us... what is your dx?

Just curious. You know some of us will end up in Psych

Meh, I think all you psychiatrists will get enough experience along the way! :)

OP is definitely bipolar manic...

That's pretty close....I seriously would answer, but I haven't been able to figure out how knowing this helps anyone at all in any way? I seriously would answer if I had a real reason. It's not a big deal. It's just that I might as well tell you my height and eye color while I'm at it, and I'm sure you're not curious about knowing those things, so I'm curious about why you want to know this thing.

You're right, it's not a big deal. Do what makes you happy, and remember to always take your meds if you have any. I keep hearing terrible stories of people going off their meds and it never seems to end well.

Good luck op, I hope you find what you want to do.

I don't think many people "enjoy" the process of being in class and learning the material, but there's definitely satisfaction in being able to understand and apply what was learned over the course. If you don't get that feeling of satisfaction in applying those concepts on a daily basis- something all physicians need to do- then you may run into trouble down the line. 2 cents.

Awesome advice - thank you.

Seriously noworkhistory, have you looked into getting some workhistory?

Thanks, I will keep this in mind.

OP, after the first page I stopped reading this thread. So take that as you will. However, in my opinion, I do believe the prereqs are very relevant to medicine. The main reason for this is that they provide the foundation for anything you will learn in medical school. You want to know pharmacology? You need to understand both organic chemistry and biology. Need to know pathology? Better know gen chem and biology. Biophysics? Physics and bio is a must. You get the point. At the end of the day, we all have to pay our dues. The classes weed people out, they are not forgiving. However, if you can get interested in the material and commit yourself to your future career, you should succeed.

I was thinking this might be true, despite all the other posts that say prereqs are irrelevant. Hopefully shadowing will give me some kind of insight. Thanks for the reply.
