Disrespectful interview

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I recently got an interview offer from a program I was looking forward to visiting. However, the email went along the lines of "We have one interview spot remaining, whoever replies first gets it." I did reply, but I felt like this was a little disrespectful on the program's part. Not only is this process already stressful, but now they have us playing jump ball for remaining spots like dogs fending for scraps. They didn't respond yet, but now I don't even feel like interviewing there and I might even write the PD about it. Thoughts?

yeah. get over yourself

i agree that this is very rude and disrespectful.

I'd rather play jump ball than be sitting on the sidelines.

Yes, I agree. This is very disrespectful. I understand that a school needs to fill a spot as soon as possible, but they should at least have the courtesy to make sequential phone calls until they find an interviewee.

very disrespectful... I wouldn't have bothered calling/emailing them. That was completely unprofessional.

As for someone's comment about playing jump ball rather than sitting on the sidelines: you better like playing jump ball, because you'll be doing it for the next 3-X years of residency.

This is the time when programs play nice and try to sell their program to us. If they're making you play jump ball right now, I can't begin to imagine what they'll be making you do once they actually own your a$s.

I'd rather sit on the sidelines for a year, reapply, and never have to play jump ball in my life.

Disrespectful?!.....Welcome to the world of being a resident!

Side Note: NO ONE respects residents. They are very low in the hospital's food chain. Resident = Cheap warm-bodied labor.

Think about match week when all your friends are out partying and you're left at home with nothing to celebrate.

Think about how you have to explain to everyone, med or non-med about what happened to you.

Think about how stressed you are for that year when you have over $200k to pay back and no job (and no deferment for some of the year since you aren't in a residency program).

Think about how that's hypothetically $200k less you'll make in your lifetime (if you care about that sort of thing)

Think about how most programs will know you are applying second time around and what they will think when you tell them you refused to play 'jump ball'.

Now how is that about sitting the sidelines for a year again? 😉

Sorry OP, to keep the metaphor going, the programs are the rule makers/refs. They call the shots for the most part. It's not always a good call, but we have to live with it.

Probably not the best way for them to hand out an interview, but you just try your best to get that spot and keep playin'.
