Hello everyone, Please advice me on whether or not I should take distance learning for prereq? I'm planning to take O-Chem I and BioChem online from University of New England due to time constraint. I know quite a few of pre-dent students taking Prereq online but I'm not sure if they got accepted. Thank you.

Call up a few schools and get their take on this.

Don't forget about the lab requirement for O-chem. I pretty sure all schools require the lab for that class.

My school offers most science courses online. However, there is a laboratory requirement where you have to go in on one Saturday every month to complete labs. If the schools you're applying to require lab components, then I'd make sure this course includes a lab. If not, you will probably need to take it on campus.

At my school most labs are a separate class. You could take the class online and complete the lab at a later time on a campus that offers the lab.

I'm actually signed up to take the same Biochem class from the University of New England as well. I had it under planned/in progress for this spring 2008 semester in my AADSAS application, and I have still have been accepted into dental school pending a decent grade in this class. Also I agree with everyone above that most if not all dental schools have a lab requirement for organic chemistry, so i'd call the schools you applied to and check whether you can take the lecture portion of the class online at UNE and then fulfill the lab requirement at another institution. Good Luck.

I have called up a few schools but none bothered to reply. I just don't wanna waste a whole semester for not doing anything since I haven't had anything O-Chem and my current school doesn't offer O-Chem I in Spring nor Summer. As far as I understand, the online O-Chem from the University of New England is a 4 credit class which includes 3 for the lecture and 1 for a "virtual lab." What dental schools have you been pending accepted amaflipcar24? Thank you all for your quick reply.

Hey amy, i've been accepted to Maryland, which is the only school that I applied to that actually requires Biochemistry. Since they haven't said anything regarding it being an online class, Im hoping that means they'll accept the credits. Are you applying for this cycle or for fall 09?

Hey Amywho. I actually called UMD today to verify whether they would accept an online class for their biochemistry requirement. They said no they don't, so I'm kinda screwed. I should have done that before enrolling in the class. I withdrew from the UNE class today by emailing Ms. Morse. I have to take the class over the summer now since most schools have started their spring semester already. This sucks.

What a coincidence, I'm applying for UMD too, not this cycle but in Fall09! Well, I still want to take the O-chem I online, since I have a free semester anyway. Then I will find a school to take my O-chem I lab and O-chem II there. I just don't see the difference of in-class and online lectures, since most of the classes I had were very boring that I had to do my own learning at home, just showing up for tests and final exams, that's all. 😴

Btw, does "have-to-take-the-class-over-the-summer" do anything to your admission status to UMD?
