Hello, I am trying to apply this cycle. Because english is my second language, my undergrad advisor asked me to take eng107 and 108 which are "First-Year Composition for ESL". However I found that Umich requires students to take English composition classes and es courses are not accepted. And I asked them and they told me they do not count those classes for english requirements. But eng101&102 are exactly same with 107&108. Just the name is different. What should I do? Thank you.

You could try and petition to get the courses to count for your major. I did this for a science class to count as an elective course to meet my elective minimums to graduate. Doesn't hurt to ask, but be prepared to register for those other courses if they won't accept them for you to graduate.

I meant for the admission for english requirement… those two 107 and 108 meet my bachelor’s degree requirements

Got it. I’d ask Umich then if they’ll make an exception. Usually the English requirement isn’t super strict and if the courses meet your graduation requirements then it should be okay. But double check with schools just to be safe.

Thank you so much. They kept telling me that if there’s ESL on official transcript, they will not accept it as a requirement. I am kinda anxious..

You should be able to share the syllabi of the classes to show the courses are equivalent. Your English department chair should also be able to attest that they are equivalent. This may not move the needle for Michigan; they have that in their requirements for some reason from the past, and unfortunately you have to abide by it. Maybe there are other writing-intensive courses you took that could satisfy the requirement at Michigan.

Thank you so much. I already shared the syllabus, but they told me they just verify based on the official transcript, so I think I need to contact with an English department. If they cannot accept this even, I will not apply to that school :(
