Hey everyone!

I just wanted to hear some thoughts on how applicable this topic would be for my diversity essays on secondaries:

I am thinking about discussing how I grew up in a city that is renowned for huge SES and healthcare gaps between even neighboring zip codes, and how this inspired my interest in healthcare reform. Then go on to talk about a thesis I wrote on healthcare disparities and incorporating public health/society classes in my college curriculum. As well as my desire to focus on the underserved and healthcare
solutions in my career.

Would this make for a good diversity essay?

What are you going to write about your purpose as a physician? Some schools give you a choice of work environments, including one where you see yourself as an advocate intending to change policy to improve community health. Some schools may have specific tracks where you have to write a specific essay on your interest in addressing health disparities among marginalized communities.

You wrote an essay on disparities in Medicine? That's it? Imagine how that's going to go over!

I didn’t write it about the fact that there are disparities in medicine. Rather, I talk about how I grew up with it all around me and gained a unique perspective on it. I discuss the volunteer work I did for a clinic that cared for the underserved, as well as incorporating public health classes into my college curriculum. The main point I try to get across in the essay is that health care policy is something I have been interested in for a while, and I would like to leverage a medical education not only to provide companionate care but also advocate for policies that address healthcare inequalities.
