I know this has been addressed a million times so before you get mad and act real tough on this forum hear me out...

I was talking to a friend that is a dentist in Missouri and he told me that the ADA has recently met at their annual conference in San Francisco and they voted to officially make the two designations different! This means that it does matter what school you go to!!!!!

From what I gathered from him:

DDS: You can only do minimally invasive procedures and you cant inject anesthetic with out an anesthesiologist present. They can not prescribe medicines other than OTC meds. They have become pretty much osteopathic dentists!

DMD: You can do more than a DDS but you have to refer out all specialty cases that are beyond the scope of a general dentist. DMD's have also lost their amalgam priviledges.

This is clearly a joke. Or a heaping load of garbage.

Infusion,
I have some Ocean front property here in Arizona if you're interested.

Sounds great. I guess that means I won't need to take pharmacology or the local anesthesia classes.

Pu-leeeze! How much money did your friend in Mo win on the bet he made with his buddies? "Hey guys, I'll bet you $50 I can freak out a pre-dent"

If this were true, then none of the practicing dentists could numb their patients, prescribe perscription mouth washes, etc. You've been had.

Apparently DMD programs have the students do more medical school rotations in hospitals... DDS not as much.. but it all depends on the school you go to.

most ******ed thread ever

I liked the thread that was like "which one goes with your name better?" that one was actually funny. PS, UNLV is DMD, right?

infusion (of lies)

A doctor at Temple said he could have paid the ADA to change from DDS to DMD but didn't because he'd have to pay to have all his stationary and inscribed lab coats changes too. They are THE SAME.

Did the school you wanted to go to the most waitlist you? I bet they offer
the DDS?

Dont go to dental schoo I hear its very hard. I hear that Pitt gives you all A's and UMN only has a 20% graduation rate. My brother goes to Tufts and said there is a huge cheating scandal that is about to break, they might not take a new class next year.

Another lovely post by infusion today... 🙄

Can you spell g-u-l-l-i-b-l-e? What your Missouri dentist was telling you could be true, notwithstanding some minor problems. First it is the ADEA not the ADA that could have such a discussion. Secondly, the degree designation is the domain of the Board of Regents of the institution and not that of professional organizations such as the ADA or ADEA.

Onamission is right on the money.

Will a forum mod please close this ridiculous thread!! 👎

I'm just going turn it into a thread I like. I think DMD sounds better than DDS. Both with my name (which I have a great alliteration thing going on with) and in general. 'Cause DDS does kind of sound like your stuttering. Finally DMD is better, 'cause that's what I'll be getting.

moderator!!!!!!!!!!

Please delete this thread????? 😡😡

There is nothing in this thread that violates the terms or service (TOS). Therefore, the mods probably will not close the thread. Update:
I just called my dad's friend from high schools ex-coworker and he told me that the new classifications are actually as follows:

The ADA and ADEA joint task force on dental education have decided to make the following changes. From this point on DMDs (Doctors of Medical Dentistry) will now use the medical and chemotherapeutic models of dentistry. This means they will treat caries by remineralization and chemotherapeutics only, with the responsibility to refer to a DDS (Doctor of dental surgery) when surgical treatment is neccesary.

This topic has been discussed ad nauseum. As it has been said numerous times in the past, there is no difference between the two designations. Closing thread.
