DMD vs DDS

They are the same thing as acknowledged by the dental community. I think it was Harvard or some university way back that decided to create DMD. DMD because it is closer to its Latin root. DMD and DDS both have the same education. If someone says otherwise, it is just their own opinion,

DMD vs DDS is like MD vs DO. Both are in the same field but one is more respected. Hence those who don't get into a DMD program try for the DDS.

Although they are equal a lot of my non-dental friends and family actually have told me similar things. When I told my uncle I got into dental school he asked “Are you getting DMD or DDS?” I told him DMD and he responded, “That’s good having your MD as well as dental license is really going to help you!”

If you want to do oral surgery, go to a school with a DMD. You will be referred to as “John Doe DMDMD”.

I won't be referring to a DMDMD, only DDSMD. Need that DDS street cred.

Cannot believe this thread is allowed to be brought out for the thousandth time. For those pre dents who are trying to become dentists, first....they are the same. Second, try to get one, neither is a walk in the park. And they are not similar to the MD/DO difference. These schools are accredited by two separate organizations. Dental schools, whether DMD or DDS granting, are all accredited by CODA.
I’ve had people ask me if I took the MCAT instead of the DAT since I’m getting a DMD degree 🙂

The average person is fairly uneducated when it comes to the schooling dentists go through. When I told my buddy I was going to dental school he said he almost became a dentist at a 12 week accelerated program at his community college. When I suggested that he was referring to being a dental assistant he reassured me that he was going to become a full on real dentist in those 12 weeks not just an assistant or hygienist.
My DDS program was only 9 weeks. I hear it’s DMD programs that are 12.
I can't tell you the countless amount of people at my job that thought i was in dental school and completing the degree, while seeing them during the 9-5 M-F. Every time having to explain I was only taking the pre-requisite classes to get in was a little awkward lol
You can only do OMS if you have a DDS cause there's no surgery in DMD

Many people don't know this. It's sad hearing stories of those who are top of their class with a 80+ CBSE, but can't go into OMFS because they went the DMD route.

DDS is the old and DMD is the new....some old dental schools switch their degree from dds to DMD cause they thought it sounded more prestigious.
Anyways when I get a practice I’ll make sure it says “Bachelor of Science in Biology” at the door. Hopefully people recognize that one
That way they know the office plants and fish tank are in good hands lol
