You start out all hot n' bothered because you are so excited to see DMU and you get close to school and see a huge looming building at the top of a hill. That's the 3000 Grand, which is where many many students live

100_2634.jpg

You turn right, get to DMU, and park. You get out of your car and see the grandeur of DMU.

100_2638.jpg

If you suck and got lost and don't get there until nightfall, then it looks like this.

100_2626.jpg

You walk towards the main building, and look to your right and see some nice outdoor study places (not in the winter folks, Des moines gets COOOLLD)

100_2700.jpg

You don't give a crap about studying, so you walk in the main door.

100_2693.jpg

To your right is a nice fireplace, artwork, and the main cafeteria, gathering place on campus.

100_2688.jpg

You walk past the tables and chairs, wave at all the super hot girls and nice guys waving back, and see the food line, plus a little cafe like area to eat as well as in the main area.

100_2629.jpg

100_2691.jpg

100_2692.jpg

This is how the cafe looks for the person that got lost

100_2627.jpg

You then head up the main stairs to the second balcony level of the main area, and are amazed at the bright lighting, artwork, and general sweetness and comfy-ness of the room.

100_2695.jpg

100_2694.jpg

You next head around the opening and the giant helix to see the library and Wellness Center, but turn around to get another look and see more relaxing area, along with some OMM tables just sitting out for students to practice on.

100_2635.jpg

You enter the library and check out some study cubicles.

100_2636.jpg

100_2637.jpg

You totally hate studying, so you jet the hell outta the library and book it over to the wellness center to play some BBall.

100_2698.jpg

You quickly get schooled by some PA students with a vengeance, so you decide to call it a day. While walking by the second floor windows, you look out at the school lawn and see the "mitochondria" rock garden formations

100_2699.jpg

Still laughing and trying decide whether DMU is either nerdy or the sweetest school ever for making mitochondria rock gardens on their main lawn, you pass by another random study area and some lockers on your way out.

Happy with your experience, you drive the 2 miles to downtown Des Moines, go to a sweet dive jazz bar, get schmammered, and are hungover for your entire flight home.

Hope you enjoyed it!

maybe i should have applied there... too bad i'm a mid-atlantic boy... but that didnt' stop me from applyign to ccom...hmmmm

I would apply (of course I would hah ). I was accepted at CCOM and really liked it there, but it was still nothing compared to DMU.

Can you be a little more specific as to why you picked DMU over CCOM ... btw thanks for the pics, I have heard a lot of great things about DMU's facilties.

CCOM had good facilities, academics, and rotations, but the feeling was just a bit colder for me. A couple students there gave me a bad impression, plus the 4 students who talked about OMM to us did not like it and thought that it was somewhere between science and pseudoscience, and that makes me think that the school either doesn't have a great OMM program, or that the curriculum for it isn't as good as I would like. Plus, CCOM is more expensive, DMU's facilities are better in general (esp. lecture halls), and I felt they were trying a little bit to be like MD schools. Boo.

Great school, but not for me.

Don't forget, DMU has the bone.

Enough said.

BTW, great pics and it was great to meet you. 👍

That was interesting seeing a pic of the library I'm actually studying in right now.

When I was interviewing way back when (last year), I never even thought to take pics of the schools - actually, I think a part of me would've felt like some sort of Japanese tourist. That being said, it's an awesome idea.

Haha...I'm definitely sick and tired of looking at slide after slide after slide.....
Almost half the test will be over slides.....nucking futs.
Back home studying for a few more hours.

Keep watching, and around Midnight, you'll see a fair number of people leaving the building to go their cars. Others you won't see, since they'll leave on the North side of the building.

so I come on SDN and read the post above...so I look at the time and sweet its right around midnight...so I go check the webcam thing and sweet...I see someone walking out of the building...good call...lol...oh and btw...to the OP...I was in your interview group but I dont remember you talking photos while we were there...did you get these from someone else.

I'm not too far away so I went down to DMU for another look before I decided.

And oh yes, I forgot to mention in the tour that another reason to go to DMU is cuz they have the bone. Nice meetin' ya Jbone

Those pics just got me really excited for my interview. It looks like an awesome place. I'll admit, I was a bit ambivalent because, well, I'm from NY, I don't know how I could live in Iowa. But the school looks really nice. And I've heard that it was really nice, but it's good to get a sneak peak before you go.

I went on a tour of ccom (liked it for the most part) but after seeing these pics, Des Moines looks sweet. How is the town? I know the med students spend a lot of time studying, but what were students normally do outside of studying on the weekends?

"If you suck and got lost and don't get there until nightfall, then it looks like this."
This will probably be me:laugh:

Awesome pics!

I've been wanted some good DMU pics and have been too lazy to take some. Thanks!

Good luck with the interviews folks!

Never underestimate the power of the bone!

I think that Des Moines is a pretty cool town. 200,000 city, 500,000 DM area. I haven't lived there ever (yet!) but I have been in des moines dozens of times over the years and like it. If you are expecting a big city like Chicago or Philly, you will be very disappointed, but also don't expect a tiny town with nothing to do. It has all the entertainment and amenities of a very large city, but the housing prices and traffic of a smaller city. I felt that is a very comfortable atmosphere for medical schoool.
I'm sure some current students can answer this better than me.

I'm loving Des Moines. It's a great sized city for me. Feel free to mail me any questions. I have some Des Moines pictures and activities here...

Let me know if I can help anyone out.

Thanks for posting this. It was entertaining, and it makes me excited for my upcoming interview!

I know the school is old, but how old are the buildings? I only ask because the their are so few trees and the ones planted don't look old.

The main Student Education Center is in it's 2nd year of use. The other 3 main building are older, but still very nice.

Thanks for the pics NjD00

Wow, nice pictures...everything as I've seen it. Thanks for posting it. Isn't the campus amazing? did you take any pictures of lecture halls?

I'll have to post some asap. I'll get back to ya. But I agree, they are the nicest lecture halls I've seen.
