The Admission Committee and the Dean of the College of Osteopathic Medicine have completed file review of the candidates currently placed on our alternate list for admission to the incoming Class of 2013. The ranking is based on a thorough review of your application materials and interview. According to our review, [my name], you have been placed in the second quarter.

The alternate list, composed of 208 students this year, is divided into quarters.

Guys, do you think I have a realistic chance to get off the wait list? My rank is anywhere between 53-104. I heard that there's little movement from last year though. Any input is appreciated. Thanks!

I was waitlisted there last year. It did not move at all, but I reapplied early and got accepted this year. There is still hope. What were stats by the way? I had a 3.8 and 29 mcat, but still got waitlisted my first cycle there. I think it was the fact I didn't have a DO letter the first time around.

Wow, I can't believe you got waitlisted there last year. You have amazing stats.

I think your chances are slim, and that you should make any necessary improvements to your application ASAP and submit it early and broadly!

That being said, a waitlist spot means that you are qualified to enter and complete medical school, that a school is ready and willing to allow you to train there, and you should be proud of this and confident that you will gain admission next year if you take the proper steps.

Best of luck to you, and do not give up. Many of us applied multiple times--you'll be stronger in the end. :luck:

Thanks a lot for the feedback guys.

I applied rather late. I think that's why I was waitlisted. Did you rewrite your personal statement? What else did you do differently besides getting a DO letter?

-wow...that makes me feel :luck:. It probably had more to do with applying later than an MD letter though. Just a guess.

-GL to everyone on the wait-list! Would love to see you at orientation in August 🙂

I acutally interviewed the very first day at DMU with those stats and got waitlisted. I think they might of thought I was using them as a backup or something since I have MD's in the family.

But, to answer the OP's question, to improve my application I received my EMT-B, CNA, and took a couple additional classes. Then, I started working as a EMT-B and CNA the rest of the year. Also, I got a DO letter.

Ohhhh. That totally makes sense. Of all the schools I interviewed at, DMU grilled me the hardest about using them as a back-up. They were pretty tough to convince.

I just got put in the second quarter with a 3.5 and a 34 MCAT...must have been a pretty bad interview 😳. I def got the feeling that they thought they were a backup school for me. I got grilled by one of the interviewers on this point.

Wait til you have to reapply to that school. The first question they asked me was why I didn't attend last year (i'm thinking I was waitlisted???). Major insercurities at that school.

really? i did not get that feel from DMU at all
good luck at DMU by the way!

I also got that same email. If they do not rank you on the list (only put you in a quarter), who do they contact first if a vacancy occurs? Do they just go down alphabetically in the first quarter and then on to the second and so forth?

I'm near the bottom of the waitlist...but that's OK as I'm doing a job I love (teaching PA school) 😉
Can't rule out re-applying in a couple of years after I get my app polished up. DMU wanted me to repeat o-chem, cell bio and suggested Kaplan review to improve my weak MCAT. (OK, that's reasonable, just doesn't sound like a lot of fun.)
Loved the school though and felt validated to be considered. Who knows? There's always next year, or the year after that....
