thanks for starting this thread. i just sent in my deposit yesterday! i'm from los angeles, so i am a little scared with the weather and distance, but hopefully i can stick it out! nice to meet you sunnyone! 😀
 
You might enjoy the variety of our weather 😉 From hot sunshine to falling snow, from fresh green spring to color-laden autumn, we have it all here in Iowa! Ok, yeah, it's freakin' cold one day then hot and humid the next, but it's all about what you make of it. Thanks for posting.....

SUNNYONE!!! I'm glad you're coming here.... We must have met some time.... I've been doing the lunch thing with the prospective students and touring them as well.... you must have been one of them.... anyway.... Just wanted to congratulate those that are going to DMU....

Hi Popoy! I interviewed back in October...2nd interview date offered, i believe. Anyway, I'm thrilled to be accepted, and i feel lucky and relieved that it is settled so early. How is your first year coming along??

Going as well as expect it to be.... First year is exciting and tough at the same time.... I'm sure you've heard this before but here it is again.... it's the volume of material over time that makes first year tough.... but the atmosphere here at DMU makes it bareable.... I spoke to the counselors here and she mentioned that a couple of deans from other COMS said that the curriculum here is much tougher than theirs or other schools they have visited.... The training is excellent especially OMM....
So you picked a great school and hope to meet with you personally some time 🙂

Hi, Everyone....
I just got an email from the admission that I am in. It's such a great feeling and relief to know I will be in Des Moines next fall. ^_^ Just love the city and school...
A quick question to ask....is there anything I need to prepare before the school starts? Or should I just relax and enjoy my life until next August? 🙂
 
Welcome AYLC - congratulations on your acceptance, and thanks for posting. Some people say to brush up on anatomy, others say that's of little benefit and to enjoy your free time as long as you can.

First and second year people- is there anything you wish you had done before you started school?

I'd say that I wished that I had drinken more beer, stayed out late, not made my bed, and visited more friends before school started. IF ANYONE TELLS YOU TO STUDY.....THEY ARE AN IDIOT!!!!! It will be your last chance to do those things that you always have wanted to do....or at least for a while. So the best advise is to enjoy yourselves, and Forget about school.....The long nights studying will be here soon. 😛
 
Welcome everyone! I'm a first year at DMU. My advice for getting prepared for medical school is that you will find your undergrad classes (if you were a natural science major) were the best preperation. In my opinion, what you could study in the summer would not be worth it. It wouldn't be extensive enough. Travel, have fun, enjoy free time...there is precious little of it in medical school! Best of luck!

My two cents.... Just relax!!! Have FUN!!! Do the things you've always put aside to do.... do them NOW!!! Go visit friends, family, grandparents, love ones, etc.

You'll find out soon enough that you will need to cherish those free time you have once medical school starts....

Once you're here, us future second years will help you get through and give you all the advice your ears can handle.... You'll be sorry you asked....j/k 🙂

Anywhoooo.... We just finished our finals.... YEE HAW!!!! Congratulations to the Class of 2005 for getting through their first semester.... see y'all next year....

Hi DMU'ers. I too, will most likely be joining DMU next fall. I still have one more interview, but will be sending my DMU deposit in, in the mean time. Keep posted, I may need to harass you all for housing advice 🙂 Happy New Year!
 
So when is it that we're supposed to get started on our financial aid? Is it Late February/Early March? I'm going to start looking around for scholarships, grants, etc. Has anyone else had any luck with finding money so far?
 
For housing, may I suggest Windsor Terrace.... It's right across the school which means easy access to DMU's facilities and resources.... I've had no problem thus far with management....

As for scholarship, grants, etc.... it's never too late to search for those.... SunnyOne, seeing you're from Iowa, in the beginning of your fall semester you will hear from the financial aid office regarding Iowa Forgivable Grant-- which will give you some dough.... May I suggest looking into those contact information given to you during your interview....

I too wish you all belated Christmas and here's hoping for everyone to have a prosperous and healthy new year.... **cheers** 🙂

It looks like there are many possibilities for scholarships and grants. There seems to be a lot of paperwork attached to them, but that's no big surprise. How is the housing search going for those of you moving to Des Moines?

wsu: how did it go? I felt the day was comfortable and felt the interviewers were trying to get to know who i am. Did you get the same vibe? -LR

Po - doesn't the "DMU class of 2006" subject heading just seem wierd? Only six months ago we were polluting the 2k5 thread. It's hard to imagine how far along we have come!
 
Hey Sunny,

My inteview was sorta structured. They pretty much asked me questions from a sheet. Nothing too original. I heard, however, others were more conversatinal and stuff. I'm not certain how the interview went. I don't think I annyoed them too much. but they really didn't seem too interested. Pretty much indifferent. How about you? ARe you done with inteviews and will you attend if accepted?

Yes i rember you!! Thanks for all your help. I heard that the admissions committte will review applications monday and submit them for approval on wednesday to the dean. wish me luck. i still have 2 more interviews left though to go to but i liked dmu...everyone was friendly...

wsu, Hopefully you'll hear very soon that you're in 🙂 My letter came within 2 weeks. As far as other interviews go, one had happened in the meantime (between DMU interview and letter) and one was scheduled, but I withdrew/canceled upon the DMU acceptance. This all happened in mid-October, so i feel very lucky to have known so early.

Have you, wsu, or anyone else reading this, read Intern Blues by Robert Marion, M.D. ?

If it's no trouble, would those accepted mind posting their stats. I know many people don't like to do it, but I'd sincerely appreciate it. I'm not applying until next year, but DMU is one of my top schools right now. Whatever you care to share as far as information is concerned will be greatly appreciated.

Wanted to say hello, I will be at Des Moines next year. Hope to find this site helpful in finding a good place to live, is it hard to find a place that is close to school?
 
Is it true that in your 3rd and 4th years of school at Des Moines you can get sent to different hospitals during the year. Is it possible to be in one state for a few months a then get sent to another during the same year?

Before the summer of your first year, DMU will be sending you a packet of materials regarding housing. There it will contain contact information and the likes. You will also have the option of rooming with one of the first years.... Anyway, it's really not hard to find housing. It depends on how much you want to dish out per month.

3000 Grand is a wonderful place with central heating, indoor gym, swimming pool, etc. but you have to pay tons of money per month.

I'm currently living in Windsor Terrace which is right across the screen from DMU. No indoor gym or swimming pool or central heating but it works for me.... There are other places that are much cheaper than these two....

What I did was planned a three day trip to Des Moines to look for housing.... If you can I suggest you do the same. There's been stories about people not even seeing their place until the day of move-in and some like it and some regret it.

Overall, you won't have any hard time finding a place.... Good luck to you.... Congratulations in your acceptance to DMU!!!

Typically rotations run from weeks to months. I heard that if you choose to go do a Ohio rotation then you can be accommodated for a year.

Don't sweat it though.... Some students don't like this the freedom to move around and some do....

I hope on of the second years will be able to see this and respond regarding the matter. Being a first year, we've just been introduced to the process and our wonderful class president is trying to set up another meeting to get more details.

Hello from class of 2002 - yep, I'm outta here in May. And it feels like I was in your shoes just yesterday. In retrospect, I'm thrilled that I chose DMU (then UOMHS). I am DEFINITELY well-respected as a student wherever I go for rotations, and I think DMU is responsible for that. More importantly, I made lifelong buddies in Des Moines -- that "friendly campus" feeling y'all got during your interviews is real.

Anyway, to answer your question, I did some traveling during my third and fourth years. I was a bit freaked out about that, but it turned out to be fairly voluntary and I had a blast. It was great to check out the residency programs in other states while meeting new people and seeing new places. Some of my classmates, on the other hand, had families and arranged their schedules so they did almost everything in one city, such as Des Moines or Chicago or Kansas City or Portland or whatever. Don't worry about that now -- it will work out, I promise.

Also don't worry about what to study - you'll be fine if you just slack off until August. Have fun and pursue a nice stress-relieving hobby to keep you sane next year. Might not hurt to get in shape if you're a couch potato -- it will help you stay focused during the long hours of study. I know this because I never got in shape and I still regret it! 🙂

Don't worry about where to live, either -- it's too early. I went up to Des Moines and got a place in April before my first year, but it turned out I was just wasting rent money. I could have shown up the first day of orientation and found a nice place. (If you are committed to being within walking distance of school, this is not a good idea - go up a month or two early to reserve an apartment). I lived a mile South of campus, which is about a mile North of Drake. The nice old houses in that neighborhood (the Drake neighborhood) have been converted to apartments and they are reasonable rent-wise.

So welcome to DMU and have a terrific four years!
 
Well hello there...! I have FINALLY made my mind up and will be in DMU for the class of 2006! I posted why on the pre-osteo site if you care to read...Anyway I am pretty darn excited... I am from the midwest (Davenport area) and love chicken fried steak, okra, mash taters, state fairs...yum! I am draging my wife who has lived out west her whole life and gags at checkered table cloths and HATES the Cracker Barrel, but she is still psyched though, and even applied to the MPH program. See you soon! 😀 😀 😀
 
Just wanted to let you future DMUers know that there's a DMU Forum at the DMU website that is already up and running.... I'm not sure exactly how you'll be able to use it but they should be sending you a password and log in that will allow you to post.
 
Greeting 2006 from 2004! This school has a great community...I have no regrets-you will be welcomed here!

I'm starting in the fall as well. Good times. I am from Minneapolis and was extremely impressed with Des Moines. Fun city, cool bars, great restraunts... and I actually liked the school too. I work on a psych unit here and my fav. psychiatrist went to DMU and loved it. See you all there in the fall.

P.S. any recomendations from current students on where to live???

Sunnyone--I think i interviewed with you way back in October. You play the bass guitar, right?

I am also from Minneapolis and have been accepted to DMU. No final decisions have been made as of yet, but I loved DMU, and perhaps we will be there together next year. Where in Minneapolis are you from???
 
Hello all--
I just wanted to comment on your thread. I interviewed at DMU back in November but was waitlisted. I then interviewed at UHS in January and was accepted!! I have to admit I loved DMU--everyone was great; the facilities were nice; the office staff was excellent. I am very excited about UHS however, I just thought I would let everyone know that DMU is a great school.

Hey current DMU students--Recently I received a packet about applying for loans and financial aid. Is there a set deadline of when that has to be in? Not that I am dying to be thousands of dollars into debt in the near future or anything. One more thing, the final $500 deposit due May 1st--can we just send it in any time before then, or do they mail us something to sign and sent it in with? I tried to e-mail financial aid yesterday, and it wouldn't go through. I just thought I would try to get as much done before my spring break ends. Thanks bundles for your help!!
 
Motogirl...you should get a letter saying something like "yes please hold a seat for me at DMU" and you send it in with $500. That can be returned at any time before the due date. As for the financial aid stuff, get it done as soon as possible. I recomend filing your FAFSA online, that is what I did. You can't just renew, you have to redo the whole thing. I don't know if it is age dependent, but I had to have my parent's tax information when I did the FAFSA even though they consider you an indpendent. You aren't going to be vying for grants or unknown scholarships anymore so there probably isn't as great of a hurry. Don't be intimidated by the financial aid packet or the sum, it all seems to work out. And just in case this is a question, for most undergrad loans, DMU will send out the deferment papers.
