Man I had some seriouse withdrawl symptoms.

Rick, Jenny, Jane what up? I am now a resident of Iowa. I moved into my new place on tuesday. It feels a little wierd that I'm not in Cali any more, but I'll get used to it. Oh yeah to anybody from the west coast these Iowans drive so slowly here its anoying and dangerouse if you are used to crusing down the intersate at 80 mph.

Talk to ya all later.

PG

What's up everybody..........

Yup, the shakes were getting unbearable....I had to resort to hitting the bottle. I am envious of you both (Prad and Jane) for already being in DSM. 2 more weeks for me. I know what you mean about the driving though, Kelly and I almost got into 3 wrecks when we were in DSM because dem iowans just don't know how to drive. What really bugs me is how people are able to park in the slow lane on Grand Ave.....it really keeps you on your toes.

hey JP,

Tell your wife that the article in The Chronicle was very well written and very informative. I started reading it and quickly caught on to the fact that she was your wife. It gave Kelly a glimpse into what it's going to be like for her when I start in August.

Thanks Rick, my wife sincerely appreciate the feedback....

Jane, I guess you didn't get Prad's message on time.... We hung out at a comedy club tonight, thought you could have joined us.... Maybe next time.

Gotta go for now.... I'll be back.... 🙂

Hey JP,

You still gonna be around when we get to DSM? When do you leave for rotations?

Already Jane's screening her calls....😀

Aww, I wish I could have hung out with you guys, JP and Prad! My phone line didn't start working until today!! Four days without the internet is pure torture...

Prad, I will call you later! I just have to assemble a couple more things. The rest of my furniture just arrived this morning. I've been watching movies on the floor!

Rick, how are you?

My brother actually thought driving here was easier, because everybody is so damn polite, and they actually stop at the stop signs!! No more California rolling stops! We didn't really notice any super-slow drivers. And my brother is definitely not a slow driver himself!

A big hello to everybody else! Hope everyone is doing ok!

To all those in DSM, let's go hit a club or something. The ones on Court look interesting!

Hey everyone!!

I can't believe how many of your are already in Des Moines. 🙂 I'll be getting there at what seems like the last minute.

Jane, I know you asked it a while ago, but I was In Anchorage, AK. That's where I'm from (well actually Eagle River). It was cool to visit family and friend before I leave for school. 🙂 Oh what are some good places to get furnature for a good price?

Well I hope everyone is enjoying the summer. 🙂

Oh Prad, where did you find out about the PBL biochemistry?
talk to everyone soon!

With regards to COMLEX, we find out about COMLEX in about 6-8weeks.... They're not givin' us a straight answer....

Exams at DMU depends on the course.... typically they are on a Monday, Wednesday or a Friday.... More typically it's on a Friday for First year and for second year its more Mon/Wed....

When you get to Des Moines, I would suggest getting a copy of the old schedule at the office of registrar (4th Floor).... Otherwise, just sit tight and during your registration you will get a schedule for the entirety of the first semester....

Ssssoooo, You're almost finish ehhh!!! Two months will fly and next thing you know you'll fly to Des Moines to start med school.... 😀

Ohhh, definitely enjoy your summer....

The wait for the COMLEX must be the worst !! I still have flashbacks from MCAT time 😱
anyways, thanks for the heads up on the exam schedule! i guess its kinda cool it's on fridays .. you get to chill on the weekends! (yeah right!!)
So during orientation we get the whole schedule including test dates and all!! that's great ... definetly allows for some planning

well it's all about the move now!! can't believe the moment of truth is here!!

hey guys..
it's me again!! like Jenny said.. I can't believe everyone is already in Des Moines ! i feel like i'm sooo behind!

ok.. well I have a couple of questions.. I hope you all can help me out here..

first i'm trying to decide wether to bring some of my furniture with me or wether to just buy some furniture in des moines !! If you got furniture in des moines, could you let me know maybe from where and just about how much the damage was!? and how long it took for them to deliver it?
it's just too much trouble to move but i don't want to spend a fortune either!! decisions, decisions !! any input would be greatly appreciated !🙂

second, who did you guys choose for your phone service? any advice on that would be great too!

allright enough of my advice asking for now!! hope everyone is doing well and enjoying what is left of the summer!! I kinda envy you guys actually!! i still have about 2 more weeks of work!

talk to you all soon
Lina

oops.. sorry one last time!!
hey Jenny! when are you moving? i'm thinking mid july!? that's not too late is it?

Lina,
I'm moving out there the last week of July, so I would say that the middle of July isn't too late. I'm buying all of my furniture when I get out there, i'm a little bit nervous about the cost also, but moving furniture was expensive from Seattle. Also I have a cell phone with AT&T, which just opened there a few months ago. They have 2 networks (GSM and TDMA, if that means anything). Both plans are the exact same for minutes, it just pretty much depends on the phones that you want. Anyway some of the prices are:

Local $39.99 you get 600 anytime minutes and unlimited nights and weekends plus free long distance to anywhere in the US

Nationwide $39.99 you get 550 anytime minutes and unlimited nights and weekends plus free long distance and free roaming in the US (as long as you're on their network 🙂
Plus you get a 30 day money back guarantee!

I really like AT&T for my cell phone company they're really nice, have good coverage in Iowa. A lot of other people have verizon or spring which seems to be pretty good, plus I think you get some free mobile to mobile minutes.

Just some thoughts. If you have any questions just PM me. 🙂 I'll be happy to answer. Unless you were just talking about a home phone, I have no idea about that. Sorry to ramble on.

Oh did you find which building you're in?

Hey Lina!

I didn't buy any furniture in DSM. I ordered from Ikea and they delivered, and it takes about 2 weeks, so if you do order from them, make sure you give them enough time. Prad would be an excellent person to ask about getting furniture in DSM, and I can't wait to go and see that furniture store he's been talking about. Although I don't think I need anymore furniture, it's always fun to look! Let's see, I got a couch, a bookshelf, a coffee table, and a side table for almost $500, including shipping. Their website isn't very representative of what they actually have, so order a catalog if you're interested. (it's www.ikea.com, by the way)

For my apartment phone line, I went with Qwest. They were recommended by the management. But I might not keep it when school starts, because I'm only using it for the internet now. I'm staying with Verizon for my cellular service. Their pricing is almost the same for the plans that Jenny mentioned.

Anyway, must get this printer hooked up...And if you didn't know, the shipping from Office Depot for online orders is free if you buy more than $50. I think Staples has the same deal. $50 is easy to rack up!

Jane

Jane,
I'm really interested in ordering from Ikea, how much was your shipping on all of that stuff? Also did they tell you how long it would take to get everything (like specific dates)? I don't want to order stuff and then have it get there before I do.

Prad,
what's this furniture store that Jane says you've been talking about? Is the stuff there comparable with Ikea's prices?

thanks
Jenny

Rick
I'll still be around till end of August as I'm trying to finish a few more courses and an internship this summer. Rotation starts in Sept 2 for me, granted I pass COMLEX of course 😉

Lina
My wife and I bought everything here in DSM (Walmart and Target).... It roughly amounted to $2000 and that's with a couple of months worth of food from Sam's Club 🙂 The stuff we bought here in DSM included TV, VCR, TV/book shelf thingy (not exactly sure what to call it), Computer table, a sofabed.... believe it or not, it only amount to that much....

BTW, it's not late to move to DSM by July.... You'll see, some of your classmates will not even have any apartments yet.... I remember some of my classmates were in hotels for a couple of days before moving into their apartments.

Jane
Sorry we missed you... maybe next time.... 😎

Jenny
Hope you're trip here to DSM will be a safe and wonderful one.... 🙂

That's it for now, gotta go study.... or something like that.... Maybe I'll go back to reading Harry Potter 😀 Later....

Hi Jenny!

I think the shipping cost depends on how heavy or big the things you order. Mine was about $150 or something. Ikea uses North American Van lines to ship your items, and the closest store is in Illinois somewhere. The N.A.Van lines will call you about a week before they plan on having your things delivered (they called me a week after I placed my order), and you can tell them when you'll be available, if they're early, but it's not like you can choose a specific day because it depends on when their drivers have to pass through Des Moines (because your stuff is basically a side business for the van lines, as they carry stuff in bulk for other companies). Then, the driver will call you a day before they arrive, so you know when to expect them. It's a good system! I love their styles, and they use a lot of recycled material in their products, which is a great thing.

Is this too confusing? Let me know if you have any other questions. I have no complaints about my order from Ikea.

I spent a lot of time at Target too! I love that place!

Prad! I'm so sorry I didn't get around to calling you tonight! I was addicted to watching my blockbusters...I saw Minority Report (FINALLY), and The Ring. Those are my new favorite movies! Until I watch another good movie... I'll PM you my number, and I will definitely call you tomorrow ok? 😀

hey guys!
thanks for all the info 🙂
Jenny,
thanks for the info on the cell ! I actually have AT&T right now but i'm paying way more than that ... I have to look into those plans you mentioned... did you sign up for it at Des Moines? (basically do you have a des moines area code?)

Jane,
I checked out the ikea website and they seem to have some great stuff.. i'm still hoping to find something in des moines that will do the trick, too! maybe Prad can shed some light on the furniture store he shopped from 😀
but if you drop your phone service, how will you get internet access once school starts? i'm trying to decide also wether my cell phone would be enough for a phone or wether i should get a home phone too!?

hey JP,
$2000 ! .. that's great, that actually gives me some hope!! and it seems like quite a lot of stuff you guys acquired there, too... I LOVE Target!! so i'm glad to see it there and actually walmart has good deals too... i'm just trying to see which way is easier and not too expensive either, i guess!!
The truck co. that I was looking at, looks like i might be spending a little more than $500 just for the truck rental ... not to mention all the labor of moving heavy stuff around!!

All i know is that I have to make a decision soon.. but all the info. has been so wonderful !! thanks again guys.. please keep it coming 😉

later

Prad soooo sad...Jane no call. Me mope around all night. 🙁

Well ok not really, I rented a movie too. and got the last of my shopping done. If you pm'ed me your number I'll call in a bit.

As for my furnature I got pretty much everything for about 2700 bucks. I suppose that it could have been a little lower but I got to have nice bed. As far as how good the furnature is I'll let Jane be the judge of that. I just kind of pointed when ever I saw a cheap price and said uhhh that one....

As for cell phones, I had sprint in Cali for 2 years and hated them. But from what I hear they have good reception here, but their coustomer service sucks. I now have verizon and I love it. I get reception almost everywhere. I pay 39 bucks a month get 550 peak unlimited nights and weekends and 1000 mobile to mobile. Hope it helps.

PG

Hey guys!

Lina, I'm going to depend on DMU's wireless service for the internet, since my aparment is supposed to be covered by that. That means I won't have to have a phone line anymore. And I don't use the phone all that much anyway. I'm still trying to decide on that, so we'll see.

Prad, I can't wait to see your place! I'm sure your furniture and everything else looks great. I still have empty boxes everywhere. Just have to get around to getting them into the recycle bins!

Oh yeah, my UPS bill, for 8 huge boxes, was $312. It arrived exactly 3 hours after I did, so it was all very, very convenient. And the UPS guy took everything into my apartment, so no heavy lifting! For me, at least 😀

Lina,
I actually have my cell phone still under a seattle zip code, but when I went to look for apartments I went to AT&T and they have the exact same deals...actually they even have them online, or you could just call 611 and tell them that you want a plan with more minutes for less money. Good luck!

Prad and Jane,
How did you guys find such a good deal with verizon? Were they having a deal or something because online it's not 550minutes for $40. Did they give you a free phone.

Jane,
thanks for the information on Ikea. I love that place. I think that i'm going to walk through there this weekend and try to make a list of the stuff that I want, and then order it before I go. 🙂

alright well i've got to get back to work...or reading the new Harry Potter!!
Jenny

This is Prad, not Jane.

I got my deal from here at DSM. I just went into the Verizon store and they had the deal that I was looking for.

No offense, but I prefer farm boys... 😉

We're gonna go hunt us some locals on Thursday!! Woo hoo!! 😀

Jane

I'm a bring ma shotgun and ma big belt buckle.

How's it going for everyone who's already in Iowa??

Jane,
When you're out looking for hot farm boys make sure to find me one also!!

Prad,
I just found out that my best friend got into grad school at Univ of MO, KC...of if you or I ever head down there we should carpool for the 3 hour drive. 🙂 I'm not sure we'll ever want to leave Des Moines though, so maybe they'll have to drive up to see us instead!!

How's everyone else doing? I'm just sitting here in Seattle, counting down the days until my last day of work, I can't wait...even though it's really not that close.

Alright well i'd better get back to work.
Talk to everyone soon!
Jenny

Hello Everyone! I just thought I would pop on and say Hi. I hope, for all those who have moved in already, that Des Moines is treating you well. I see you guys are still busy racking up the pages on here. . .nearly 70, wow! As I'm sure JP has been happy to tell, we are nearly done with classes. I haven't seen him around much though. . .hmmmmmm, I think someone is sleeping in 🙂 Enjoy your summer!

Katie

you thought I was gone, but I'm back. sorry I haven't been posting much, moving out of a four bedroom apartment sucks big time. everyone stuff is jumbled together. looks like this weekend is going to be big for coffee consumption. not to mention the fact that it's eleventy billion degrees here in philly. I'm moving to DSM the 26th, and I'm so psyched. I'm living in 109 at 3000 grand with another first year student named Tom Murphy, from Florida. I'll probably spend that first week harassing all of you guys. If anyone here likes to bike, I'd be interested in doing a bike tour of DSM to get to know where everything is. In fact, I'll even organize it, as long as I can get some interest. we can stop somewhere for lunch, etc.

Also, I posted on the DMU forum, but wanted to post here as well.

MALPRACTICE BOWL
losing is not an option

I don't know when this takes place, but I would love to get some practices going. let me know.

hello all!!
ok after getting rid of my hard to overcome laziness i am finally posting to this thread as i do confirm of being ur classmate these next years at DMU. So i'll begin wth introducing my "self" first-----my name is sara (as u can obviously =c from my all revealing uncreative obvious screen name =) and i graduated from University of Ca at berkeley in aug 2002!! well so cal is my home town but northern cali has also become one in past few years----and offcourse next destination is I---O----W----A. i noticed how some of you are from cali----so count me as another addition. To be honest i wasnt expecting to get in to any medical school this year but for some reason my luck did work out. Right now i am teaching at a junior college and hopefully will meet u all during dmu orientation!!
oh and did u all get ur fin aid stuff cleared up----i am borrowing loans from citi bank----does anyone has any other good lenders in mind!!!
lucky: u graduated from cal!!! i noticed in ur profile-----what was ur major!!!

Sara!!!!! Oh my gosh, I didn't think there'd be anybody else from Cal!! This is sooo awesome, dude! I graduated May 2002, in IB. What was your major?

I'm originally from SF, and I got into DSM last week. It's lovely here! I can't wait to meet you too.

Raj, I love pro football, but I don't know how I'll be playing it! Maybe I'll just sit on the bench w/ Jenny and check out all of you guys in tights. 😉

Katie! Are you going to be around this summer? I would love to meet you, JP, and Kimberlee one day. If everyone's free, that is.

Jane

I have not posted at this site in a long time, but I promise to be very active from now on.

I am entering my second year at DMU, some of you may recognize me quite early as I give a lot of tours and do some interviewing of candidates. I live in 3000 Grand, along with a ton of others 2nd and 1st year students. Number 505. Feel free to stop by I should be home from July 6th untill the 20th (I will be on RAGBRAI the following week). Love to hear from you guys, if you have any questions feel free to post to me or PM me and I will send you my email address if it isn't already on my profile.

RAJ

I will swing by when I get in town, probably on the 7th. Also I was hoping that even though the room mate thing didn't work out we could still possibly be work out partners. I have been wanting to get into weights this year and you seem to be big on those. Besides I want to drop that last 12 pounds, still can't believe I lost 25 this year!

Raj,

A big "HELL YEAH" when it comes to practicing for the malpractice bowl. Not into biking much though as I prefer the lazy route. You know, hitting a golf ball then chasing after it in the powered golf cart.

Jane,
I'll make sure I wear the really tight pants for the game...as well as bring the ole banana cup....you fellow athlete's know what I mean!

Sara,
Welcome to the thread...can't wait to meet you and everybody else.

Prad,
What's up dog! I haven't talked to you in a while...starting to go through withdrawal.

Rick

Rick,

Prad says HI! We went to some bars tonight, and WDSM is where it's at. If it's anywhere at all, that is. 😉 They have karaoke night too, so better get that voice box warmed up!!

~J

Lucky

I'll be bumming around Des Moines for most of July. I didn't feel like going back to the parents' place that early so I'm going to keep busy with quality time by the pool and I work at the gym 🙂 So if you want to meet up sometime, that is great. If nothing else, you can catch me at the garage sale on the 19th since I'm on the committee. I actually spoke to Kimberlee when I was working at the YMCA today, I know she would be up for meeting you guys as well, since you'll actually see her next year 🙂 Enjoy the sun!!

Katie

Katie,

I would love to meet up with you, Kimberlee, and JP (if he's free) sometime soon. Can we aim for sometime next week? Any day but Monday is fine for me. Do you work at the gym on campus? Docgeorge and I go there regularly. Just look for the newbies!

Te...a drink with jam and bread
And that brings us back to Do..........

Alright....give me the mic, show me wear the f$#%ing studio's at! (another Eminem lyric)

Rico! Que pasa hombre?

I am computerless and have to come to campus to use the ones in the lab. How is the packing going? I cant wait till you move into town man. Jane and I were at some bars yesterday and the night before. These people do not know how to party. We have change that.

I was really hopeing the Jane would forget about seeing the Karioke sign. Damn I'll have to humiliate my self on the stage I guess. My high school choir teacher would probally cringe if he found out that I was going to sing again. He actualy told me not to sign up for a second semister of choir. He told me that I should spend time developing my other tallents.

Raj are y ou moving in June or in July?

Hey Prad,

I have a booklet on Preceptorship Directory in Iowa.... I'd like to give them to you so you can start lookin' for those cool surgeons 🙂 to shadow for your first two year.... which you can get noted on your record.... Anyway, call me....

Late,
JP

Rick,

I'm going to consult with someone about your question as it's far from anything I know or can look up.... I'll let you know what I find out....

JP I'll give you a call in about an hour. Oh yeah I'm laying claim to the water Jug dispenser.

JP,
I'd be intsted in the two lamps, they're both tall right?
Jenny

Jane,
Yep, I work at the gym on campus but I often work out at the YMCA (unless I have a shift at the gym). I'm not working at all next week b/c of the holiday and I don't want to 🙂 I can't say I've seen any "newbies" there, but maybe I was too buried in my Harry Potter book. Maybe you have seen me? I usually have pig tales in and wear a black knee brace. I'm busy Monday and Tuesday but Wed and Thurs are wide open. I don't know about JP but I can snag him during our class meeting thing on Monday and ask him. What are you guys doing to while away the summer?

Katie

Hey JP,
I'd actually be very interested in the TV stand and the computer table as well! please let me know when you guys are moving.. i'd be in town by about july 17-18!! Thanks in advance ..

How's everyone else doing? I'm glad to see Jane and Prad having fun in DSM... gives me hope!!

Sara,
welcome to the thread! glad to have you join us..

anyways, since everyone is plugging their sport 😉 anyone on here into Tennis at all!! just thought i'd throw that out there... 😎 .. sure would love to have a tennis partner out in DSM

hope everyone is staying cool
later,
Lina

hey guys,
The packing has officially begun...Unlike the rest of you slackers, we are basically packing up a 3+ bedroom house into a 25 ft. truck and driving about 8 hours on July 8th. DSM will never be the same......

JP,
Thanks for all the trouble you're going through, I really appreciate it.

Prad,
Good to hear from you finally. Kelly has missed you immensely! Hey, do you have a set of golf clubs yet....once I get up there, I'll be looking for a golfing buddy(ies). How often are you working out? I want to get back into the habit as well (no, not a nun).

Anyone been to Coney Island Ted's yet? If not, you are missing out. I think I've found my next lunch spot!

Can't wait to see/meet everyone.
Rick

25 ft truck!! You pimp!!! 😉 I am soooo looking forward to meeting the three of you...

Katie, Wednesday or Thursday would work for me. I'm just enjoying my apartment, mostly! I'm planning to make a trip to Illinois later in July, and see more of the midwest. Heh, I don't know if I like Des Moines more, or my independence... 😀

Lina, I haven't touched a tennis racket in like, 12 years. So you definitely do NOT want me as your tennis partner, unless you want an easy kill 😉

Jane

Yeah...I need the big truck to compensate, sort of like middle-aged men and sports cars!

Rick, I didn't believe for a second about the whole "field mouse" thing you said! But sports cars...maybe I can use one as compensation too!

Jenny
Yup, they're both tall and black. One is halogen the other is a 120V/150W light bulb that appears to be, what I call, a wannabe-halogen lamp.... 🙂 Just let me know when you'll like to take them.

Lina
The TV stand has a space for the TV and an area on the left side as a bookshelf. Below the area for the TV is also a small compartment for CDs/cassettes/Videos/DVDs.... The computer table is one that I built with my own hands (** sentimental value**) 😀 .... They're all yours once you get here, if you'd like.... Just let us know when....

Rick,
I haven't forgotten about you, buddy.... It's not a bother at all.... They haven't responded back yet so sit tight, I'm sure I'll get a response within the next couple of days. SOooo, you're on the road aye.... One the road again (singing).... My wife and I drove form Cali and had everything tightly bundled in a small Toyota Corolla 😱 .... ENJOY THE SPECTACULAR VIEW.... You'll see terrains change from Green to Brown to White to Plateaus to Hills.... It's funny, but I really enjoyed my cross country trip. So Drive safely, but also enjoy the scenary....

Jane,
I vote for the independence 🙂 .... or DSM..... Alright... BOTH 😀 I'm sure all of you will enjoy your stay here.... It's definitely not California and DSM definitely exemplify the "midwestern hospitality."

Hello!

I have some stuff to get rid of as well, and JP told me I should ask you guys if anyone was interested.

I have 3 bookshelves:
1 6ft by 2.5 ft (?) black book shelf w/5 shelves $15
2 3ft by 2.5ft (?) brown book shelves w/ 3 shelves $8 per
And I have small dining room table w/4 chairs (dark green metal legs and chairs w/ light brown top) $60

If anyone is interested, my dad would love you b/c then he won't have to load them home 🙂

By the way Jane, I hear from Kimberlee that I just missed you in the computer labs this morning. JP wants to get together, we were thinking Wednesday.
