Where is everybody??? 😕

What's up everyone!! Just thought I'd say hi since I haven't been on in a while. I saw a few of the latest posts. So JP, you finished comlex step 1 huh? Was it better or worse than the MCAT in your opinion? So is everyone stoked to start med school? Are most of you going to live at Windsor Terr.? (did I get the name right on that?) Oh yeah, I'm leaving for OBC friday! Everything seemed to work out. I just got my orders friday though so it was getting down to the wire. So is everyone going to still post on here throughout med school? Hopefully we can all keep in touch on here. You guys will have to teach me some OMM someday 🙂. Well, I have to run. I'm off to church. Talk to you all later.

Leighton

The boards are nothing like the MCATs that's for sure.... 🙂

The COMLEX Step 1 is very clinically oriented than what I expected.... Some of the questions we got seemed more appropriate for Step 2.... Then again it's just my opinion.

I think once y'all go through the COMLEX you'll realize how easy we all had it with the MCATs.... Just another mountain to climb...

Hey guys I was on a short vaction with Darci, that unfortunately got cut short. Her dad had a MI yesterday and is now undergoeing a triple bypass talk to ya all later.

Wow, sory to here that Prad. Tell Darci that we'll be thinking of her and her family and we'll be praying for her father.

Rick

Oh my gosh.... I hope that he's okay!!! My thoughts to y'all specially Darci and her family....

Prad,

I'm so sorry to hear about Darci's father. Please let her know that my thoughts are with her and her family. I hope that everything will be alright. Take care ok?

Jane

Hi everybody,

Sorry I haven't been on much (hehe Rick, I bet the chat room has gotten raunchier without me to regulate 😉 )

Anyway, I have so much to do this coming week. Meeting up with friends and family, and the ever so dreaded packing 😱

Leighton, glad to hear your plans are going at full speed! I will definitely try to keep posting here after school starts. It might just be my only outlet to the rest of the world 😀 Take care, dude!

JP, is it summer break yet?? Or how many more weeks of class do you have? I would love to get coffee or lunch with you and your wife sometime after I get into town, if you have time. I'll be there after the 19th.

Hey everyone,
I haven't been keeping up on this for a few days, I was in Iowa apartment searching and now I'm in Alaska for my last little vacation before schools starts.

I looked at what seemed like a ton of places. I didn't get to look at the 500 at 31st, but I did look at the imperial. It was nice but I really liked the Hampon House. I got a really good feel for it and it's a smaller complex so that was nice. 🙂 Lina, do you remember what your apartment number is there? I think that I'll be living in A22. Hopefully we'll be close to each other and we'll party it up...or just study lots. 🙂

alright well i'm outta here, I hope everyone is doing well.
Jenny

hey luckystar,

just ran into jp this afternoon. i don't know what his plans are, but i do know that he still has class and i think he might be doing some mph classes as well. jp is sooooo nice though tha i'm sure he will make time to meet you. if not, i can try to be a poor substitute!

kimberlee 🙂

Kimberlee, I would love to meet up with you too!! I just mentioned JP because he's on here a lot. I can't wait to meet Katie and Rebehkah (or is it Rebecca?) too!

Jenny, it's great that you got a place!!! Which part of Alaska are you in right now? I've always wanted to visit there...hopefully on a cruise...😀

Let's all try to meet up.... 🙂 That would be great.... Just let me know when both of you are free (Jane and Kimberlee) or anyone else that will be around....

I have classes at night on Monday and Tuesday from 5:30 - 10pm.... My wife has to teach classes on Wednesday and Thursday night 5-9:30pm... Just to let you both know.... Otherwise, I'm free.... 😎

I'm sure we'll be able to find some time to go out....

Hey Kimberlee, when you get a chance can you tell me who chipped in for the India Star certificate??? I would love to email you all individually or call each of those people to thank you all for being so kind.... The timing was awesome as I was really getting into the board studying and y'all made me feel great about helping others.... alrighty, enough mussy stuff.... I sincerely thank you!!! I'll try to get a hold of you some time to chat.... 😀

Jane, I have a month of COMS left and I have three courses I'm taking for my Masters and an internship for the summer before I go off to Ohio.... The best part is that seeing I'm a dual degree, the last week for COMS will be time off because we're allowed an automatic grade for the class homework....

Anyway, gotta go watch so TV and then get some shut eye....

TORNADO WATCH and there's lightning and freaky thunder right now in Des Moines.... It's comin'!!! 🙂

Jenny!
I'm so happy you got an apt there... didn't just feel right!! i'm glad to have someone living close by!! i'm sure we'll do lots of studying 🙄 .... kidding.. actually this might be great.. we can even car pool if the parking situation is messy...

Jane, I hope packing is going well ... 😀 i'm not looking forward to that at all!!!!! so are you flying to des moines???

later,
Lina

Hey Prad,

I responded to your PM to me.... something funky with the computer happened when I was sending it.... Anyway, in the event you didn't get a reply in your PM.... here's another one.... Everything is "A" OKAY!!!

Later, JP

BTW, for those of you who want to have my notes for your first week in class (Introduction to Osteopatic Medicine), just email me or PM me and I'll make sure to forward it to you....

Whew! The packing is done! Well, almost. I just have to get the few remaining things that are flying with me packed up. So, Lina, yes, I'll be flying into Des Moines, with my mom and brother next Thursday. I've been saying that I can't wait to move, and now I can't believe that it's actually happening!! This is so awesome. 🙂

I saw the lightning show on the news here! That must have been some thunderstorm! I hope it will settle down by the time my mom's in town, or she'll be even more worried about me 🙄

Congrats!!! Another year and more years to come!!! 😎

Just another tiny little note.... ACOFP club had a fundraising event at DMU and it was embroidering your name on your white coat with a DMU logo on the bottom of your name....

Although a great idea, it's turning out that not a lot of people like what it turned out to be....

The embroidery was too big and almost everyone's name is covered by the collar (the one's with short names may not have this problem but still complained that it was too big)....

Needless to say, I have yet to hear anyone be completely satisfied with the embroidery on their white coat..... Some second years are actually trying to take it out or buying a new white coat all together because they are a bit embarrass about having their names "hugely" displayed on their white coats....

The current president of ACOFP club was not very welcoming of suggestions and I guess this is what happens.... Trust me, I've had an experience with her which I'd rather not discuss.... All I can say is good luck to her board members....

So next time, ACOFP does another fundraising event that has something to do with embroidery..... you may want to think twice.

Just thought I'd share that to all of you before you regret it and have to buy a new white coat....

BTW, you get your white coats for free from the Alumni Association on your white coat ceremony.... so don't go out buying one....

Later newbies....

Hey JP, I got your PM thanks again buddy. Rather then PM everyone I put this out here. Thank you for all your prayers and well wishes for Darci's dad. Just to update you guys, they did a CABG X4 on sunday and had to go back in on Monday morning to clear some clots around his heart. But he's doing fine now, he's had his ET tube taken out and 3 of his 4 chest tubes. He's alert and oriented x3 and talking. Gotta go talk to ya all later.

CABG x 4.... WOW, the human body is truly amazing and how much stress and strain it takes before givin' in....

I'm glad he's alert and oriented.... here's hoping for a great recovery!!!

I know the CABG X4 was a wake up call for me. Going to be eating a lot less junk and excercise a lot more. He seemed like a really healthy guy. He is gig guy (musular), did a lot of walking, and weights in addition to his normal job as a PT dealing with ortho pts. The good news is that it looks like he'll be fine. What are you doing JP, roaming around the boards, should'nt you be relaxing or something?😉

This is a form of relaxation.... 😀

I had a high school teacher that was very, very athletic and still he had to get a CABG x 4, as well.... I guess, big, small, fat, thin.... you never really know....

I'm roaming to see what's been goin' on in the forum.... I'm trying to see advice about boards and rotations.... which btw, I just got my schedule for Doctor's Hospital and I'm LOVIN' it!!!

I'm actually doing a surgery rotation with the Director of residency for Vasculary surgery..... I'm not exactly sure if I should be scared or happy.... Maybe scared.... this guy is the top doggy and I'm gonna have to represent!!! Yup, definitely scared...
😱

You definately need to keep me posted about rotations. How is it that you get to do it with the Chair of Vascular? I thought that you did rotations with in a dept.

In each rotation you are assigned a doc.... I guess the director for their vascular surgery residency has time to go and teach students..... I guess I'm one of the few who got lucky?!

Youre assinged a Doc? Too Cool!!!

BTW, We now how a Fourth Year Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs.... Dr. Dana Schaffer.

Dr. David Boesler is the Third Year Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs....

They seem to keep changing the name of the positions.... Anyway, there's new news.... Dr. Schaffer is already scheduling appointments with the soon-to-be fourth years....

I'm tellin' all good things 🙂

DMU ROCKS!!!

JP yea or ney on the Pan Optic?

Dr. Wattleworth will not allow you to use it in your first SPAL encounter, so you may want to borrow if you chose to get a Pan Optic..... Otherwise, I have one.... It would cost an arm and a leg but I think its worth it to have. You will get a better visual with a Pan Optic than a regular Opthalmoscope.... just my humble opinion....

If you can afford it, I say get it. But you don't have to have such an expensive device....

It's up to you....

Thanks JP. Do you know if there will be people who will be trying to dump some equipment?

I doubt it, but you may want to keep an eye out when your on campus.... Almost everyone keeps their equipments....

BTW, don't buy any equipments now.... the bookstore has packages ready for you to buy.

SOMA (Student Osteopathic Medical Association) also sells packages....

But I really suggest buying it from the bookstore because they will take care of you in the event that your equipment breaks down.... With SOMA, noone seems to know who to turn to....

I'll definately buy form the book store. Besides I really liked the ladies that work there.

The bookstore ladies (Tina, Vicki, and Kim) said they liked you too just from first visit with them....

So when I'm long gone from here, keep them company 🙂

What can I say, I have that charming good looks that everyone likes. But seriously I like them too. They were soooo nice. I'll definately keep them company. So what else are you up to besides roaming SDN?

I'm actually at DMACC (Des Moines Area Community College) waiting for my wife to get off work....

I'm also searching the web for apartments near Doctors Hospital....

I'm having troubles with their computer here.... it seems a bit slow.... or maybe the website is havin' problems...

How about yourself, what are you up to???

Nothing really. I'm in Los Banos just finishing up some packing. I'll be heading back to Sac to be with Darci tommarow. Right now I'm just burning some time. How goes the apt. hunt?

Can you get to chat from where you are?

It was goin' well until the darn website seems to have shut down on me.... or at least I'm havin' trouble getting in on the website...

It's really cheap here in the midwest.... I'm finding a lot more amenities and space in Ohio.... the cheapest one I found was a $300/mo 2bed, 1 bath, garage, gym, pool, club house... 😱

We're thinking about going there for a visit, now that I have my schedule to check out the area....

It seems like a safe area though.... from the virtual tour.... then again, they always make it seem clean and such.... So it's better to be there in person....

Problem is its about 13hours away!!! Oh well....

If theres any way that you can go out there and look, you probabally should, if both of you cant go just send your wife, she'll have to spend most of the time at the apt any way. I did'nt mention this but think about flying there.

$300 for a two bedroom thats half of what I'm paying is DSM😱

Darn computer.... just kicked me out....+pissed+

I'm shocked my self.... I didn't believe it either when I heard about it but I saw it with my own eyes....

We're thinkin' about truckin' over there during the fourth of July weekend, just to check things out (apartment, hospital, clinics, neighborhood, etc.)

If you want to fly I just checked the flights for SW from Omha to Columbus is 200 round trip if you fly on mon, tues, wed,or sat.

Cool.... thanks for checkin' those airline ticks..

Problem arises when money is tight right now.... So for both of us, it will cost a lot more than drivin'.... We're trying to save up for the move to Ohio.

I'm also scheduled to attend the AOA Convention in New Orleans, Louisiana.... and I just found out today, I'll be interviewing in San Francisco next year.... We're both goin' which means more money to cash out.... although DMU is paying for me to go, my wife will not be....

Anywho, just trying to avoid any costly trips to save up.... for the future...

NOt a prob. just trying to help. How do I get to go on cool trips like you do? Can I as a first year go to LA for the confrence?

Yup, you can go.... You can ask for student government to pay for one educational trip per year.... so you may want to chose wisely.... 😀

There's the AOA Convention, AAO Convocation, DO Day on the Hill, ACOFP Convention.... I think those are the biggest ones to go to....

I would definitely coordinate it with Darci and see which ones you both can go to....

I'm getting my AOA Convention paid for because I'm a student representative for the DMU Alumni Association.

I'm getting the APHA (American Public Health Association) conference in San Francisco because I'm a student interviewer for COMS Admission..... They select students that are typically from the West coast to interview potential candidate there.... I'm highly involved with Admissions and seeing I'm from the west, it makes for a perfect blend....

Be involved and you'll get places.... 😉 which I can totally see you doin'.... Then again, grades may slip up and you can't afford that if you're goin' for a surgery residency....

I am actually interested in the admissions process believe it or not. I got curriouse when I was going through the whole process. I was kind of planing to getting my but up to the 4th floor and saying hey my name is prad i'm kind of interested in the admissions process is there anything that I can do to help out?

Espicially since I'll have over a month in DSM before school starts, I'll need something to do.

As far as the grades hopefully I'll be ok. I'm not too smart, but I know how to glue my butt to a chair and read. It's worked so far...hope it holds out.

Those who you will interview are in for a treat!
