What's up everyone!! I haven't been around in a while cause things have been pretty hectic. Is everyone excited about starting med school soon?? Well, I have some bad news. I got into USUHS and decided to take it. I couldn't really pass it up. I feel like I'm selling out to the dark side because I should be going to a DO school. I hope everyone has a great time in medical school and I'm sure all of you are going to be fantastic doctors. I was really looking forward to meeting all of you but maybe one day some of us will cross paths in a hospital somewhere. Later everyone !!

Leighton

No worries man. You're not selling out, your following your dream. Your going to be a Doctor that's all that matters. Keep in touch with us here on SDN. Later man and good luck.

Prad

Bad news?? That's great news, Leighton! You said that USUHS was your top pick, and CONGRATULATIONS for getting accepted!!!

Take care, good luck in school, and I hope to see you around in the future!

Jane

Prad, my friend, I'm glad you chose that place.... I know you'll like it there. If I would do it again, I would most certainly live in the place you chose....

BTW, it was WONDERFUL meeting you and your dad. I hope I didn't bore you guys with some of the things we did.... The bookstore ladies like you already.... They think you're going to make a difference on campus and I sincerely share that sentiment. You'll do wonderful here and your personality perfectly blends well with the more successful students around campus.

Prad, you flatter me about loosing weight.... 🙂 I did lose weight but have been very bad the past week as board studying and class studying has taken a bigger priority. Thanx for the compliment, though.... maybe next time y'all see me I'll be a bit bigger from my slacking of going to the gym.... Which reminds me, the school has approved to pay approx 50% of membership to the YMCA for their facilities as we transition to destroying the building and not having a basketball court.... The old gym equipment will be transfered over to the small new adjunct building for the time being so there will be aerobic equipments and weights to utilize....

I'm so excited for y'all to get started.... please, please don't hesitate to contact me when y'all get to town....

I can't seem to sleep.... That's why I'm posting at about 4 in the morning.... 😉

Leighton.... CONGRATULATIONS!!! That's what you wanted and I'm sooooo glad you got what you wanted. Good luck and hope we cross paths some day....

Later, JP

Hey JP, hows the studying going? Yeah, I really like that place. I found it by accident. I cant wait to move in there.

Now your flattering me my friend with tall tales of my personality. My dad really liked the tour you gave us. He says he's never seen another medical school, but from what he saw, he's happy that I'll be going to DMU.

Hey Guys...
i've been catching up on your posts recently and I just wanted to add a little note of my own...
I hope to be joining you all in aug.
I have a quick question .. would anyone have any info on where students have matched in the past years and into what fields... this may have been discussed before but forgive me there were too many posts 😉
thanks a bunch .....

I hope to be going out to Des Moines towards the end of May.. I hope to meet some of you then if you were going to be in town

Hi Leb.DO!

Have you decided on DMU? I'm going to be in DSM this coming weekend to look for housing. Hopefully I'll be able to move in early June.

Prad, did Leighton send you DMU's matchlist? I somehow vaguely remember that somewhere back in this thread.

Anyway, I hope to meet you this summer Leb.DO!

Jane

Alas Jane, that one that Leighton sent me is on my old comp, which has been put into retirement.

I do know that there were a lot of Anest., and Rads mathes. I rember an Orto to Mayo. A lot of decently competative allo residencys at some heavy duty centers. I just dont rember any more.

I'm glad Prad.... In regards to studying.... It's coming down to the wire.... I have three exams left this week and then two weeks of board break. I don't think I'm prepared by who knows.... I still have two weeks.

I know they're trying to post a match list this year on the web.... huh? I wonder if they did already.... I'll bring that up with alumni association and admissions for the future if they haven't already.

I know some people who matched at Blanks' Children's Hospital in Des Moines, Cleveland Clinic for Anesthesiology, Mayo Clinic....

If you guys do have a list, just post in on this thread so that everyone can see it....

Okay.... I have the night to finalize my preparation for the ENT Exam.... it's amazing, I'm going bonkers constantly looking at images of ears, nose, and throat disease....

Later 😎

Hey JP, do we have a NS club or any NS faculty?

Oh yeah, I got my DMU medicine T-shirt.😀

It doesn't really matter. I just know that DMU has a very respectable history. I'll start paying attention to the lists when the two classes ahead of us match.

That's absolutely right....

I know what you mean Jane, about waiting to see how 05 and 06 do.

Does anyone know when the White coating is supposed to be. Any chance that they minght change it to August?

Leb.DO,

On behalf of all of us...Welcome! It's good to see some more people coming to DMU. Tell us a little about yourself. Even though it's already been posted, it's a pain going through ALL of our posts, so here's a quick bio of myself. My name is Rick, I'm 23, married, and have a 1 year old daughter. From St. Augustine, FL and attended U. of Central Florida for my Undergrad.

I'll be in DSM this weekend as well

NS = Neuro Surg.... gotcha.... As far as I know, no.... BUT.... I do know of students that are gung ho future Neurosurgeons and have talked to faculty and staff.... So there may be one but I've no clue who....

White coat ceremony is typically second week of August

Hi JP!! Good luck with all those exams! I know you'll kick butt though. 😉

You're so right, Rick! It's a pain going through this thread. You forgot to add that your daughter is the cutest thing in the world 😉

I'm from California, went to Cal, unmarried, 22 years old, female, and am officially unemployed as of last friday

Jane

Sweet on both accounts JP. I just thought that white coat was in Sept.

Now putting on my stern voice....

go study

LebDO, welcome tell us a little about your self. I'm 24 goning on 12....I think that about sums me up.

Rick, wuz up man? Good luck apt hunting. Are you going to meet up with Jane?

I don't think we can meet up because of the time constraints on my part. Sorry Rick!!

Jane

ya bum, your so lucky. 1 more week untill finals cant wait.

Thanks Jane.... I hope I do kick some serious tussy.... 🙂

Here's a small factoid about ENT:
#1 cause of Epistaxis (Nosebleed) is PICKING YOUR NOSE 😀 The finger reaches in an area called "Little's area" within the nose. That is where the Kisselbach's plexus is found thus resulting in insult to the plexus and you get epistaxis....

Factoid about me:
JP, OMS-II (soon to be OMS III), 25 married, no children, Originally from California, will be doing rotations in Columbus, Ohio @ Doctor's Hospital, NHSC 4 yr scholar recipient, looking forward to seeing y'all soon....

And as Prad has said.... Gotta go study.... I'll read up on y'all posting later....

Hey everyone,
So I finally decided when I'm going to look at apartments. I'm going to look June 6th-8th. 🙂 I'm excited, I just hope that there are still some good places close to school then. 🙂

Jane, goodluck this weekend in DSM let us know how it goes.

Prad, thanks for the information about the apartments again.

If anyone will be in DSM that weekend I'd love to meet up with you.
Jenny

Prad,
I just send you a PM, but you can ignore it because they finally connected me to the correct person.
Thanks
Jenny

Jenny, glad you got the right person. Any hope. If you can get a place at my place you probablly wont have any regrets.

well I got my registration packet, time to go see the doc.

Rember guy's you should feel ONE and ONLY ONE hand on your shoulder. 😉

Hey Guys....
thanks for all the replies.... i'm 23 years old and from MI ..
I will be coming to des moines this fall !! yeah... well that decision came after a lot of thought but ultimately I felt the most comfortable there and i like what the school has to offer...
it's funny because after reading some of the posts, I feel like I already know you guys !!

maybe i can get some opinions from you.... anything would help!
i got a letter from MSU just yesterday stating that they are willing to offer me a guaranteed spot in next year's class if i was willing to delay admission... I really don't know what to do.. obviously it would be more convenient and CHEAPER to do that but I don't know that I want to wait around another year ... just my thoughts, any input would help

Hey Jane... I was hoping to come down sometime in the next couple of weeks to look for apartments.... what are some places that you will be looking at?? and what price range should I be expecting?? what week exactly are you coming down.. maybe i can arrange it so we could meet up

Lina

Linda, Jane is going this week if I'm not mistaken. You might want to try pm ing her. As far a MSU goes, do what you think is best for you. You just have to make sure that you are going to be happy. Good luck, Prad.

And we dont have you scared yet?????

Damn we must be loosing our touch.😀 😀 😀

Lina,
I'm going to des moines, June 6th through the 8th. If you'll be there then I'd love to meet up with you. From what I've noticed most places are between $500-600/month and a lot of places include at least some utilities. If you have any questions feel free to PM me.
Jenny

Lina, Check your PM... 🙂

MSU vs DMU.... Would there be any way you can contact some of the students at MSU to ask them further questions about delaying admissions? Maybe you can find someone who did and can get a better perspective.

Having gone through a couple of years of med school, I can tell you all that it's really a battle of stamina.... you just have to keep going even if you fail courses or are too tired to study anymore.... Thus forgoing one year may not be such a bad idea.

Please don't get me wrong.... I LOVE DMU.... and would never ever trade what I've learned here but as Lina has pointed out there are many issues to think about such as tuition and time.

I say, if you don't feel like delaying your admission then I say come to DMU. As I've responded to your PM, Michigan is one of the states we have no problems placing students.... I have not heard any students get rejected from going to MI. Actually we get students placing in Michigan for their residencies, that simply goes to show you how many students we have there. Also, we have a few students from MSU that attend DMU for their masters or if they fail their classes in MSU.... yup, they make it up here at DMU if they don't want to fall behind their class....

Okay, I'm sorry I'm rambling.... just taking a break from studies.... I just finish Cardiovascular Pharmacology.... Here's a small factoid for y'all to remember....

Hydroxyurea is used to treat Sickle cell anemia patient. If y'all work out and visited GNC lately, this is also utilized for athleting performance or for enhancing their "built" body.... The mechanism for this drug, Hydroxyurea, is to encourage the body to increase HbF or Fetal Hemoglobin which has a higher affinity for Oxygen thus improving athleting performance or in sickle cell anemia DILUTES the HbS (Sickled Hemoglobin) helping the patient to get tissue to their organs.... 🙂

Did you guys notice, every time I'm posting some factoid on studentdoctor that they've included it in the show ER.... For example, a month ago I posted something about pulmonary embolism and a couple of weeks ago it was regarding BOTULINUM TOXIN (or BOTOX) and last week Dr. Carter smell "almond breath" in patient thus diagnosis CYANIDE POISONING.... 😀 I think I'm just paranoid but have notice this every week.... Maybe I'm just studying the right things 😉 (I can only hope!!!)... or maybe I'm studying too much and have nothing else to do with my life and going bonkers.....

I will be really shock if they include something about Hydroxyurea for this final episode this week..... 🙂

Speaking of which..... Gotta go back and study Preventative Med and boards!!! 21 MORE DAYZZZZZ!!!

Later y'all

Hi Lina! Yes, I'll be in DSM this weekend. Like Jenny said, most 1 bdrms are $500-600. I'd say that all of the places I've seen advertised include heat, water, and garbage in the rent. A parking space usually runs $50-60. There's another person on SDN that deferred his acceptance for a year to MSU, choosing it over DMU. If you look back, you'll see his posts (Eric, or eschauberger). He probably wouldn't mind talking to you about the situation, so just PM him. MSU is a really great school, and money is always a factor. If I may offer my personal opinion, I don't think I could wait another year to start! This year has been tough enough, knowing that I got accepted, and just waiting and waiting. But, they also have a good research facility at MSU, and you could always travel or whatever you want during your year off. So, I guess you do have a lot to think about. 🙂

Hi Prad! Hey, I know the perfect place I can meet with you and Darci! It's called the Grand Cafe, and they have free valet parking for lunch. I need to ask my friend for the address and phone number. It's a cute place, and their banana cream pie is the best. I usually don't like pie, but this is the exception! 😀

JP, you should write for ER! That can be your side job. Doctor by day, TV doctor screenwriter by night! That ought to pay the bills 😀

Thanks Jenny! I'll be sure to post while I'm in DSM. Hopefully I won't be rained upon 😉

It's cool...I can take a hint. Haven't even met me and already I'm the social leper. Ha Ha. Hey, but thanks for Teagan's compliment.

Seriously though, it's fine...Kelly and I are pretty swamped too. Thursday and Friday, both days are booked with appointments to look at houses and duplexes. If we find some time, we'll hit a couple apartment complexes. And then we leave Saturday morning.

Because I'm a glutton for Teagan compliments, here's my daughter once more....

Rick

Oh my gosh Rick! Teagan is growing up so fast!! I bet that those eyes will get her out of anything 🙂
You're leaving Saturday morning? That's when I'm starting to look! We'll definitely meet up later 😀

Where are most of the places that you're looking at?

Yeah, she gets 'em from her daddy...😱

Most of the places are right around the school, in little neighborhoods. Some are in Windsor Heights and Clive though, but that's still not too bad. We need a place with some room and I don't really mind living a couple of miles away.

How about you?

If I weren't such a lazy butt, I'd live farther from campus too. The apartments I've seen that require driving to school are much nicer, some are cheaper, and most are newer. I just get a little scared at the thought of driving on icy roads during the winter. And icy roads at night are even scarier to me 😱

All the places I plan to look at are within walking distance (either across the street or 3-4 blocks away).

So does Teagan take after you more?

Yeah, we both cry when we're either hungry or wet!

Besides the eyes, I think the rest comes from Kelly. Hopefully she won't inherit my sense of style. If it wasn't for my wife, I'd be walking around with a BROWN BELT and BLACK SHOES...FOR SHAME!!!!

ahem..

*cough*socialleperinthehouse*cough*

 I can't wait to meet you guys! So what's Kelly going to be up to when you're buried in the books?

That place souds great Jane, just include detailed directions to the place. For even though my academic prowess is world renound, I'm lousy with directions.

Rick, my man, Tegan looks just like you man. Just dont let her get you haircut.😀

I cant wait to meet up with you again. You said you were moving in early July right?

There's something wrong with Brown belt and black shoes? 😕

Damn, how come no one ever told me that your not supposed to do that?

Very few shades of brown go with black. It's one of those fashion rules. Pay no heed to them! 😉

Everyone is always on here at night...and my computer is completely dead so I can't chat with everyone then. The other day it sparked and hasn't turned on since. +pissed+ Good thing we get new gateway laptops in a couple of months. Now that my computer is broken I'll need it.

Jane,
good luck this weekend, hopefully the weather will be on your side.

I'm going to be here during the daytime! Unemployment rocks 😀

Sorry to hear about your computer, Jenny. It's a good thing you'll get a new one very soon 🙂

It looks like the student-generated apartment list has been updated! From what I can see, the Imperial is one of the few places that's listed with DSL/cable modem. Everything else has dial-up listed. I mean, I'm sure I'd still have to pay a monthly fee, but I guess everything's installed already. I can't wait to look at places. Prad, I called the number you gave me, and it's a realty company that doesn't do rentals. Should I be asking for somebody in particular? Thanks 😀

Jane, I think I got the main main number to the realty place. Jenny tracked down the number to the lady who does the rentals. You want to ask for Lonnie. Jenny can you give Jane the number and rick too if he wants it.

I'm sorry you and rick are social lepers. 😀 I still like you guys though.

Jane,
I had the same probems when I called, eventually they put me through to the right person. The funny part was whenever I would ask for Lonnie they'd just be like we have 2 Lonnies and they would both always be out. Anyway, I finally tracked her down and her cell phone number is: 515-224-5712. Good luck and if you have a digital camera take pictures. 🙂 When are you moving out there again?

Jenny

Hey guys!

I would like to move in the first or second week of June. Thanks for the info! I'll try them again. I'm going to take my digital camcorder, but I don't know if I could load any pictures I take onto my computer. I'll try!
