GREAT NEWS FROM OCA (Office of Clinical Affairs)

I was going to simply cut and paste but I don't think I'm suppose to....

Anyway.... There will now be THREE Deans for OCA. One will oversee everything (Dr. Hoff), one will be for the transition from 2nd to 3rd (Dr. Boesler), and one for the transition from 3rd to 4th year (in process of searching).

The great news is that the ultimate goal is get everyone a stay in Iowa if they so choses. Receive an ENTIRE year schedule for third and fourth year instead of slowly piecing together rotation sites.... sort of similary to our current Ohio sites were an entire schedule will be given to you so you know what you're doing for the entire year.

By the time you guys get here there will be an update site book for all sites available.

There's more details but I have to get some studyin' so if you have any questions.... just ask away....

The point is that you new first years will most definitely reap from the benefits of what we are currently doing....

NO MORE PROBLEMS WITH DMU's third and fourth year!!!

This medical school ROCKS!!!

😱 BIG PROBLEM! NEED HELP!

I have tickets for a may 2nd interview as the e-mail I got told me. Somehow DMU had thought I wanted to come for the April 24 date. I can get more tickets but can?t get a refund for the May 2nd tickets. DUM is willing to let me come on May 2nd, but should I change plans and go tomorrow? Will my chances of getting in be that much better if I go tomorrow? I really don?t want to screw this up! If I go tomorrow and get an acceptance then I can use the May tickets to come look for housing. WHAT SHOULD I DO!!!????
:scared: 😱

I have bad and good news for you.... the bad news is the longer you wait the less likely you will get accepted.... The good news is that DMU is allowing you to get an earlier interview which means you have a better chance of getting in.

May 2nd is THE LAST INTERVIEW date.... how do I know this??? Because I'm interviewing students that day. So if you decide to go then, I may end up interviewing you.... This also means that by that date, the spots are possibly all taken and you may be interviewing for alternate spots....

I'm just telling you the true facts.... so if you wait longer then you may be going for only the alternate spots... this is not a guarantee but more likely you are interviewing for alternate spots.....

Just to give you an idea. My year, they took 12 people from the alternate. Last year, they took only 4..... DMU is becoming more and more popular in the medical field thus many students want to go to DMU as their first choice.... thus not many people from the alternate spots are being pick.... The only reason the last year's 4 people were taken was simply because some of the students got in to their state medical school which translates to cheaper tuition.... Otherwise, I would expect people not getting off the waitlist this year....

SO if you even want any fighting chance I would go on the 24th otherwise, you're possibly just interviewing for the alternate....

Good luck.....

Thank you soooo much for the help. That just backs-up what I thought. I have just finished getting tickes for the 24th and will be there on April 23. It will be a wild night of packing! I am sorry that I will not have the chance to be interviewed by you, but I am glad that they are haveing me up now. I really want to be at DMU. Any advice on getting a place to stay on this short notice?😀

Good luck on your interview Valmont.

JP, do yo know how many spots are still available as of TODAY?

Also, how does the alternate list work? How is it ranked? Do you know the latest day someone could get pulled off the alternate list (could it be all the way up to first day of class)?

I'm not sure when you'll get a chance to check this response.... but if you're arriving by tomorrow.... there's still a chance with getting a student to house you.... just contact admissions.

Otherwise, the Savory is really nice and reasonably priced.... in downtown and located near campus.... the shuttle driver will even be happy to show you around.

Hope that helps.... there are many hotels near the airport. The airport is only 10-15 minutes away from campus... not far at all, so you have plenty of options even if you decide as you arrive in Des Moines International Airport.....

I'll see if I can introduce myself when you interview..... If I don't get a chance to introduce yourself when I'm around all you prospective candidates....

Later, JP

As of last week there were less than 20 spots left....

Alternate list depends on how whether or not you're alternate high, medium of low.... Within the high alternate, it depends on whether or not you were highly recommended by your interviewers.... The final say is based on the Dean and the final admissions committee, but the interviewers have a strong pull as to whether or not you have any chance whatsoever....

They can take people off the waitlist up up to the first day of classes.... possibly within the first week of classes.... otherwise, no chance after first week.... The reason is your first class and first final is within one week of classes.... so it's not conceivable to ask anyone to come in after that....

Hope that helps....

Hey Guys!

Just thought I'd tell you that there's a Full Page ad in this weeks Newsweek. It's about 15 pages into it. I thought it was impressive (though I wonder how much they spent on it).

-=Eric

HI EVERYBODY!! Thanks so much for telling us the good news, JP! I know you've got to be really busy studying and all, but this place would not be the same without you 🙂

Valmont, I've got my fingers crossed for you! It's great that you were able to change your plans on such short notice. Let us know how it went!

vwracer06, did you have your interview yet?

Eric, that's so funny about the ad! I hope it wasn't too cheesy
---------------------------------------

Anyway, I didn't even get to go sightseeing in Philly 🙁 But I'm back feeling the same way as before I went: DMU rocks my world, floats my boat, rings my bells, etc... 😀 So I hope I'll see all of you (those who decided to go to DMU) this summer!! We should definitely hang out before school starts!

Jane, whats up? How was Drexel? I'm all for getting together before school starts. I'll tell you when I'm moivng to Iowa after the May 6th.

JP keep studying bro only about a month left right?

Valmont good luck on your interveiw tell us what you thought and how it went.

Prad...

Hey,
I Know everyone has answered this before, but when is everyone planning on apartment shopping, moving and how are they moving all of their stuff. I looked into Amtrak but I guess they don't ship to Des Moines...I'm thinking maybe I'll just send my stuff via Amtrak to the closest location to Des Moines and then just rent a truck or something?? I still have no idea when I'm moving to des moines or even when I going to go apartment shopping. Maybe if a couple of us are going to be apartment shopping at the same time we could meet up and look together. 🙂

Hope everyone is doing alright. I haven't been on here much lately (my computer isn't getting along with me lately).

See everyone soon, I can't believe it school starts in just over 3 months. 🙂 I'm so excited.
Jenny

Yeah I interview last week. I'm thinking my chances of getting in are pretty slim since there are just a few spots left. I thought my interview went well. I'm checking my email like 300 times a day.
Is there anything I can do to improve my chances now? I thought about calling but I don't know what to say or who to talk to.

Prad,

Drexel...it was alright. Don't want to do any bashing here (well, not that much to bash about anyway), but basically, I'm still choosing to go to DMU no matter what 🙂 How are you doing? Still going to class?

Hi Jenny! I'm going apartment shopping from May 16-18 with my dad. I'm hoping to move in early June, and I'll be shipping my belongings via UPS. I'm not bringing much, just clothes, some electronics, and kitchenware. I was planning on using a moving company, but I'm more comfortable with UPS. And they now have the pickup service where they can come to your house and pick up all of your boxes, so it's quite convenient. Your Amtrak plan sounds like what JP did (he posted how he moved somewhere in this thread) and he recommends doing that.

+pissed+ This computer is so slow!! It takes forever to post! Apples...🙄 I shouldn't complain though, since I'm supposed to be working. 😀

Anyway, did you send a thank you note/card after your interview? It's a nice gesture. I'm not sure who you should call either, but I'm willing to bet that Becky Grissom (she's the Director of Admissions, right?) would usually handle these calls. Hmm. What should you say? I guess you can just reiterate your interest in the school, that you enjoyed your interview, and then maybe you can ask when they expect to notify you of their decision. The email should come any day now! Where are you from?

Luckystar,
What are you going to do in Des Moines during the summer?? I'm just nervous to quick working to early and then wish that I had more money from an extra month of work...plus Seattle summers are AWESOME.

Is UPS reasonably priced for shipping stuff?
Jenny

Hey Jenny,

I have to buy a car after I get to Des Moines, so I want plenty of time to figure that one out. Since I'm getting a used car, it will take more time than if I was getting a new one. I also plan on talking to some of the faculty that are doing research at DMU and see if I can get involved in one of the projects. I want to get familiar with everything before classes start. I couldn't keep working even if I wanted to because of this time limit that's imposed on the lab (complicated situation). You should enjoy your summer in Seattle though, if you can!

From UPS' website, I should plan to spend $300-400. Compared to the $700+ I would be paying for the moving company, it's a pretty good deal.

Jane

Hey Jenny, did I interview with you at UHS in December?

Jane, no talking smak. Whats up with that? I was waiting for you to talk some seriouse trash about Drexel. As far as going to class it's a lot easier to get motivated to go to class when I only have 3 more weeks left.😀 😀 😀

Talk to ya all later.

PS vwracer let us know if you got in or not.

I tried checking this out but to no avail.... Exactly what did it have???

Just wondering....

Jenny,

If you're actually doing what I'm doing, then you stuff from AMTRAK will arrive in Ottumwa, Iowa.... which is roughly 2 hours away from Des Moines.... I would suggest renting a UHaul van or something.... Ottumwa seems to be in the middle of nowhere. I would suggest trying to get your stuff when it's daylight just because the town is pretty much covered with trees around this time and it was hard to look for it when my wife and I drove there at night....

Anyway, if you want any other feedback just ask away....

<43 days left before boards.... counting down 😀

Later, JP

Hi JP!

Do you take the boards somewhere in DSM? Or is it proctored in DMU? Wow...I hope your studying goes well!!

vwracer.... Don't lose hope.... you never know.... You can call admissions up.... You can be up front with them and say you're getting a bit anxious but was wondering if you application w/interview has been reviewed by the admissions committee or if they have any idea when you'll be hearing from them.

Here's something I learned today studying for pathology.... and I was hungry so it was making good sense at the moment.

If you see CHERRY RED lips --- think Carbon Monoxide poisoning
IF you smell ALMOND breath --- think Cyanide poisoning
If you smell GARLIC scented breath --- Think Arsenic poisoning

Simply enough to make me even hungrieeeerrrr 😀

Another thing that I hope that you all know..... DO NOT EVER or NEVER EVER give a child aspirin for a viral illness because the child can die from Reye's Syndrome....

Hope this has been informative 😉

Less than 2.5 weeks of work for me! I can't wait!!

Counting down the days...

Did you call Windsor Terrace yet, Prad? Do they have any openings?

It's actually proctored at DMU. Or if you decide to take it somewhere else, you can do that too....

If you guys and gals have time, I would visit the NBOME (National Board of Osteoapthic Medical Education) website to see where the test sites are, sample exams, and topics they cover in STEP 1,2,3.... I know it may seem early but it will give you some idea of how to study for your classes.... In retrospect, I wish I had done so....

Sorry I didn't respond quickly enough.... I guess the page switched and I didn't notice you had posted.... oppsss 😉

Gotta go study Rheumatology/Orthopedic Surgery....

Here's a fun factoid all of the surgeons so far have told us.... Orthopedic surgeons are really "glorified mechanics" One of the surgeons that teach us here said (jokingly, of course) is that all you have to know for orthopedic surgery is "Rightie tightie, leftie losie".... For those of you wanting to be surgeons, I hope you like protocols and step by step guide to opening up the human body and closing it back up....

Later folks

docgeorge,
I did interview with you at UHS in december. 🙂

Jp, thanks for the amtrak information! I'm still deciding how I want to move my stuff, and after looking into it I think it might be easier to just send it UPS like Jane is doing. 🙂 We'll see though, I still have some time.

Jenny

I called Widsor several times, they havent called me back yet. I'm kind of thinking about getting the furnished studio at 3000 grand.

I'm glad to have you in our class. So what made you pick DMU, i rember you saying you really liked it in KC.

Docgeorge,
UHS was my first interview, so it was hard for me to tell. I did like it there and I though they had pretty nice facilities, but my interview at DMU really made me want to be part of the school. It was funny because before I went for the interview it was not even close to my top school, I even thought about not going to the interview. I'm really glad I did though because I've visited a few schools now and I still feel that DMU is the best school for me. 🙂

My roommate is applying for graduate school in kansas city, if she gets in we'll have to carpool down to KC and have you fiance and my roomate carpool when they come to DMU. 🙂

Jenny

JP: I've always thought that I should be a mechanic if I ever dropped out of med school, so that means ortho is perfect for me! (just kiddin about the mechanic part 😉) That's cool that you don't have to go far to take the test. When I first read your post, I was a little puzzled at why Rheum would be taught with Ortho, but now it sort of makes sense 😀

Valmont: I hope your interview went well today!

Jenny: Have you thought about when you're going go apartment shopping?

Prad: It's true that getting a place at 3000 Grand is the most convenient. If I weren't going to DSM to look at places, I'd probably just get one there even if I don't get to see it first.

Rick: How come you don't post in here anymore?? 🙁 What are you up to?

Jenny, I'm glad you've decided to join the familia.... 🙂

Rheumatology and Orthopedic surgery kinda-sorta-go hand in hand... excuse the pun 😀 This medical specialty module really deals with autoimmune diseases, joint, and extremities....

Prad, I just saw the managers for Windsor.... Next time I'll see them I'll make sure to mention to call back people that are leaving messages.... I'll see what I can do on this end....

I met Valmont today... I really hope you did well in your interview.... Good luck dude.... Sorry I wasn't able to talk to you longer.... I had OMM lab that afternoon.... Thus I had to study to save me some time for some MUST SEE TV...

I hope y'all had pathology.... it's driving me crazy.... unfortunately, we don't have as strong as a pathology as we had previously had here at DMU.... I Hope that by next year, things will improve.

ooh Must See TV!! It's a new Friends!! I almost wish that they didn't extend their contract for another season, because I won't have time to watch all the episodes next year. Ah well, I'll take what I can get!

Ohhh yes you will.... it's called a VCR.... 😀 Just tape it and you'll simply eliminate all the commercials.... 😉 You cannot, must not leave MUST SEE TV.... for sanity sake....

BTW, it's raining again.... goodness gracious.... this weather is somethin' alright. Yesterday it was bloomin' wonderful but then overnight it's wet.... yoyo weather....

For those of you who need brushing up on medical terminology go to this site.... it's not complete or comprehensive at all, but entertaining nonetheless.... Actually some of the terms are things you need to remember for the COMLEX.

http://www.dmu.edu/medterms/

Have fun

You know what's better than a VCR? TiVO!!! Now that thing ROCKS. If only I had money...

Dude JP! Makin us study before we have to? That's cool with me though 😀 Keep 'em coming!

Hey everyone,
Last night I got to talk to a recent graduate of DMU and now I'm even my psyched about it then I was before. He had nothing but really good things to say. 🙂

About apartment shopping, I still have no Idea when I'm going. I wanted to go around the same time that my roommate is going, but she still has a lot of schools to hear back from. I may just need to go without her. So probably late may or early june. Have you heard much about Windsor Sqare? It's like 5 miles away. I'm not sure I want to live that far but it's pretty new will full appliances so we'll see.

Valmont, hope your interview went well and you'll be joining us in Des Moines in a couple of months. 🙂
Jenny

Nope, havent heard much about Windsor Square. I'm at the sate where any thing close to campus will do just fine. As far as going to KC, I won't be heading down that way much, but when I do Carpool sounds just fine.

Jane, dude, your working, what do you mean you dont have any money? You have to get Tivo, so I can come over and watch Must see TV. 😛 Now, I'm broke, no job, no money, no nada...🙄

I haven't heard about Windsor Square either. I'm with Prad, the closer to campus, the better!

Prad, I'm broke because I spend my money on the stupidest things. And, I've been saving up to get that car. My parents are having their house remodeled, so I really don't want to ask them for much. But I can't guarantee that I won't be begging them for spare change in the future!

I've been wondering about something for the longest time. You know on TV, when they have commercials for a sitcom or whatever, they always say something like "8/7 Central". Does that mean that it's on at 8pm for everybody(east and west coast), but at 7pm for anybody in the Central time zone? In that case, Friends would be on at 7pm right?

Yes, I wonder about the silliest things...😛 That's what happens when I haven't been in school for a year. Brain --> mush

Luckystar,
from what i've noticed you're correct about the 8/7central stuff. When I was in MN for undergrad prime time TV started at 7pm. In Seattle it all starts at 8pm, and I think it's the same in the east. But then it's even more strange because I'm from Alaska and there prime time starts at 7pm. It's quite weird, but it is Alaska.

Hello all-

Yes I'm still alive, just been busy...

When is everybody going to be in DSM in May, because my wife and I will be there either the weekend of the 9th or the weekend of the 16th, depending when we can both get off of work. If any of you guys are going to be there the same time, we'd love to meet up with you.

Hey JP, do you know of anyone who is renting a three bedroom house/apartment/duplex, etc... who is leaving DSM for rotations?

I hope everyone had a great Easter, here is a pictuire of my little girl on Easter Day (she'll be turning 1 next Saturday...she is growing up so fast!)

Attachments

Sorry I don't know of anyone who has a 3 bed place going off to rotations.... If I hear anything I'll post it.... I'll check out the posting board if there's any....

Small reminder that for those of you coming to campus, there's a poster board of information about housing etc.... near the game room. Check it out.

Popoy,
This is not Prad. This is his fiance, Darci. I met you back in Nov. when I was interviewing at DMU. We talked about Ca., UCD, UCDMC, and the weather. Anyway, I just wanted to say "hi." I also wanted to say that I enjoyed meeting you. You are a nice guy, and I am glad that you and Prad get along so well. I am saying this because he will need someone to cry to when the weather turns bad. Being from Ca, I think that you know what I mean. Thanks for all of the info. Everything you tell him gets passed along to me.

luckystar,
Again, this is not Prad. This is Darci. I just wanted to say "hi." I have heard so much about you. Since we live so close to one another, I thought that it would be fun if we all could meet for lunch sometime. Let me know what you think.

Women, I get no respect...none at all.... I get pushed off the chair, and my post's hijacked...Oh well what can I do but suffer😉

Rick where have you been man, I've almost given you and Leghiton up for lost. Cute Pic of Tegan. I think Jane will be there on the 18th or something like that. Too bad your not going next weekend, we could have grabbed a beer or something.

Talk to ya all later.

Hi Darci!!! We finally "meet"! I'd love to meet you in person too! Are you going to be graduating with Prad? We should go out and celebrate! I'm usually free on the weekends, let me know whenever you two have time. 🙂

Rick, Teagan just gets more and more adorable! She really is growing up fast! Next thing you know, she'll be taller than me! 😀 I'll be in Des Moines from May 16-18 with my dad. Is driving to school an option for you? I'm just thinking there might be larger apartments/condos/houses a little farther from campus. I'll keep an eye out too!

Prad, haha to you! 😀 But I'll probably commiserate with you during all the thunderstorms and icy roads. I won't tell Darci if you cry though 😉 (just kiddin Darci, you'll get all the juicy details!)

Jenny, that's so weird about the whole primetime business! I'll just have to adapt. Do the networks think that midwesterners sleep earlier?

Popoy, there's a game room?? What's in it?

You know what, I do remember you.... or I think I do....

Glad things worked out with both you and Prad. My wife and I were apart my first year in DSM.... she was in Chicago. Prad seems to be a wonderful person and I'm sure he'll fit quite well around here 🙂 My shoulders is always ready 😉

Weather, bad.... bad.... bad.... did I mention??? bad ??? 😀

Today it was a perfect day again.... yet another storm seems to be comin' around.... 🙂 That's a part of the adventure around here.... 😀

If you'll be in UHS, then I'm sure you'll meet some DMU students.... starting this year, we're working closely with UHS w/ certain clubs and we have events were we come down to Kansas City....

Congratulations on your acceptance and both of you will be a couple of DO powerhouse!!!

A couple of Fooz (sp?) ball tables.
There was a couple of video games but a couple of years ago, to many people thought it was noisy....
And, of course, an OMM Table 🙂

Jane, Darci already graduated last may. But yea we'd love to meed with you. It'll probablly have to wait till after finals, cuz I'm going to Iowa, next week and your going on the 18th. But if we dont get a chance to go out in Cali, we can do it Iowa, she's going to be there for a week or so to move me in.

Rick or Leghiton, Should I get metal shaft or graphite shaft on my clubs?

JP, If you want to practice OMM once I get to DSM, I encourage you to call often😀

Jane,
Prad will be through with school by the middle of May. If you are free, we could meet you the weekend of May 24. Let us know.

JP,
Hey! Please tell me more about this new relationship between DMU and UHS. It sounds like a perfect opportunity for Prad and I to see each other.

Hey Prad and Darci! The weekend of May 24th sounds good. I can't wait to meet you two!

Where is Leighton, by the way??

 Thanks for defending our clappys, Prad! That was too funny!

Because we're in such close proximity.... UAAO, SOMA, and other club activities will be emailed between the campuses so that we can attend UHS's events and UHS can attend ours.... And if the school has a buget or the club has a budget to work with, then everything is paid for to go between campuses.... We're simply doing some things now and we hope that the new board members of the club will continue this new tradition between the campuses.... It's really up to the new boards....
