My rule of thumb is don't pick any team in Utah in the first round (besides one year with Keith Van Horn). Also, never Wake nor Cincinnati (even though they're not in the tournament this year). What's the deal with MSU getting bounced so early? That never happens.

Guys...the laptops are not bad..class of 09 all had DVD burners! Every year it will be better than last...so don't worry.

Dude, Utah advances all the time. You can't say "Utah teams" because the U always does well. (Last year...sweet sixteen)

Reminds me...never pick UNC again. Nice choke Carolina. 👎

I'm stoked. I was procrastinating from my school work and cruised the portal. I just discovered we have access to an assortment of medical journals. Heck yes!

Hey everybody,
Am I the only one who hasn't completed the background check yet? How much does it cost? Having some major knee surgery Thurs. so I'll be down for a while. Just wanted to make sure there weren't any time constraints. I'll get it done as soon as I'm sober. 😉
Thanks.
J

I don't remember there being any time constraints. It was 75 bones. good luck with the surgery.

I haven't done the background check either. I don't think we have to do it until much closer to class...I hope.

Man, I'm not even sure if I did that or not. Hopefully, if I've already done it, the system will prevent me from doing it twice. In case anyone is in need of a good waste of time, I've found an incredibly useful/entertaining website. I'm not sure how many big movie fans we have in the Class, but the website www.critcker.com is awesome! Enjoy!

Check your email if you did do the background check. I got an email from the verified credentials office saying i'm squeaky clean and it showed an email was also sent to Jamie Rehmann. It takes about 5 minutes to do.

My bad, Redneck. Thanks for the correction....I guess I was a bit distracted at work when I was typing the post. Work can be such a distraction some days. Also, thanks for the info on the background check. I apparently have not done it, but I'm sure I'll do it soon enough.

It'sElectric,

No problem, glad to help. But I do have to ask; "Registered Cocksman" is that a reference to the usual slang meaning, or is it by chance a spelling and phonetic aberation for coxswain? What I'm getting at is, have you ever done crew?

Unfortunately, it's not and I haven't. I simply altered the typical "Registered User" when I first signed up. I had just recently seen Wedding Crashers, and I couldn't help but put that up. It's a reference to that movie, which is absolutely hilarious.

Thanks for asking.

Anyone interested in contacting DMU to see if they can hook us up with a 2006 match list?? I've been reading through a lot of the residency pages, and curiosity is definitely getting the best of me. Hopefully 4 years from now, we have an admirable match list that above all other things is entirely representative of what each of us wanted to get into. Obviously, that's the most important thing.

The list really doesn't concern me much (plus it probably hasn't changed much from the two we got during interviews). I would be interested though in seeing a table of rank lists and what number each student matched. How many got their first, second, or third spot etc... I cruised the OB/GYN thread and I believe some folks were talking about breaking down and crying for several days after match day for matching low on their list. Right now that has more meaning to me than the specialties (since I don't know what I want to pursue). Yet, to know that whatever I stumble into I'll be prepared enough to land a residency I'm stoked about would peak my curiosity. Now that is something I wish we could get. Hmmm...

I couldn't agree more, Redneck. Unfortunately, I doubt we'll ever see such a list. That's basically what I was alluding to when I mentioned that I hope our future match list is indicative of what we all wanted. If we all decide to go into Family Practice, then so be it. I'm not concerned with specialties either. I'm primarily concerned with attaining the goals I set. But as always, it really comes down to how much you put into it. Performing well in the classroom/rotations and especially on the boards will have the greatest effect on where we are accepted from our match list.

There are a couple of other breweries: Granite City (Clive), Court Avenue (DT DSM), and Raccoon River (DSM). I'm more of a foo foo fruity drink person, but the beer drinkers around me also seem to approve of the first 2 places. The first is almost exactly like Rock Bottom, and the second is more of a pub atmosphere with lots of live blues music. I have no experience with the last place. There are also other Iowan breweries that might meet your fancy within a 2 hour drive.

I went to college at Drake and have spent more than a few nights at Raccoon River. I like to drink beer, but would in no way consider myself to be an expert. With that said, I really like the beer at Raccoon River and they have salsa dancing on thursday night--which is pretty awesome. It has been a few years since I have been there, but I imagine the place is pretty much still the same. They also have pretty good food, if a little pricey.

so expat did you live abroad for a spell?

yeah, I currently live in France. I have had a job for the past seven months as an English professor in a high school here, but I have lived abroad the last three years. Before I came to France, I lived in Burkina Faso(west africa) for two years. I am ready to head back to america for a while though 🙂 and really excited to get back into the swing of school. Just a little worried about finding an apt and all of that jazz while so far away--but I guess, across an ocean or on a coast--it is all the same when you are more than a car ride away. I am sure it will be fine.

Holy crap. that sounds super exciting, when do you return? i've got some weddings and things to attend to in early july and will move I suppose directly after that.

I am done here in a month and then I am traveling to Prague and Austria. My current roommate is from Austria. Then it is to NYC for a couple of months to visit friends and finally back to the midwest end of june, beginning of july. And then, it is time to get ready to become a student again!

Has anyone found, or know of, any apartments that have a washer and dryer inside each individual apartment? I have only been able to find places with community washers and dryers.

Have you contacted all of the apartments on the "Recommended Apartments by DMU Students" list provided on the new student portal? There are definitely some on there that provide a washer/dryer in the unit. In addition, you can more quickly browse through the nearly 150 apartments listed on apartmentfinder.com, which explicitly lists whether the apartment includes a washer/dryer in the unit.

I'm eventually putting together a spreadsheet breaking down each apartment that I'm able to get information on. It's still early in the game (considering most landlords don't even know what they'll have available come the end of July), but I only have a few opportunities to make it to Des Moines to look at places.

Good Luck. I know I can't wait to know exactly where I'll be living next Fall.

I started using rent.com to browse the apartments that were on the Recommended list...that has been helpful. It sure is hard looking for a place to live when you don't live in the area. Thanks for the ideas.

I couldn't agree more with this statement. I've gotten so used to looking for places in my current area where I've been for a number of years. Looking for a place in an area where I am completely unfamiliar has been very challenging. If I knew the Des Moines area and lived around there, it would be that much easier to just drive around and look for various rentals. Especially since I'd be familiar with what's "good" and what's "garbage".

kahoo99-I am planning on the Caliman in Morgan hill this june, sorry for the delayed reply. Going to give wildflower a go too. Were you on a college team? I am definitely an amateur training on my own, but I'm having a great time doing so.

I haven't seen brokeback mountain yet. It is not out on rental, it just came out into theaters and it has won a bunch of golden globe awards.

I've decided to join my wife and do a couple triathlons as well. I'm going to do the 1/2 IM in may in Napa, then an international in june in sacto, and then hopefully a full IM in early august. I'm loving the training also, it's been so long since i trained like this, I just love it. Good luck.

Well, we find out tomorrow what our financial aid package will be. I got my fingers crossed for the full stafford 40,000. (+/-)

Seriously, I've been checking the portal daily this week to see if the financial package is up yet since it says it will be up "by" March 30th. That "by" somehow gave me such great hope that I've been checking regularly. In fact, I just checked before coming here. Let's all hope for the best for all of us.

I just submitted my FAFSA tonight, does anyone know how long it will be until Ii hear something???? Also, is anyone planning to maybe visit Des Moines this spring to check out apartments. I'm not going to be moving out there until August 2nd or so, will that leave me enough time to apartment hunt before orientation?
Also, is anyone roomate hunting, let me know.

FS,
Try using the portal if no one bites from the land of SDN. You've got the portal classifieds and forum.

Yup, Best wishes everyone with the loans. Debt for everyone! Yippie!

Boo-ya! The financial aid packed is FINALLY on the portal.

Looks like the links are up to apply for financial aid, now. Is anyone else applying for the HPSP? I am confused if I am still supposed to apply for student loans while waiting to hear from the Navy. 😕

I'm not an expert, but I would apply for the loans and then decline them if you get the Navy.

Anyone else having issues with the entrance interview requiring you to fill in the school address?? Next to it says in parenthesis "if known", yet when you try to submit without listing a school address, it forces you to enter something into each field.

Slightly confused, I guess.

I think you are right.

I was definitely under the wrong impression that this would be our actual Award Letter. From what I'm gathering, this financial aid package just provides us with links to officially apply for the loans through DMU, and we will receive an award letter at a later day.

Also, this Grad Plus Loan sounds like a much better deal compared to alternative private loans. Is it new for this year???

Yeah it says that the Grad Plus loan starts this year. That's great actually!

I just typed "n/a" in all the empty fields. It went through fine.

So do I apply for extra Grad Plus loans now; or just do the stafford loans now, and wait until later to see if I need it? What are you folks doing?

I am looking for a female roommate at Des Moines. I am purchasing a town home in the Des Moines area and I am looking for a roommate. I will be a first year DO student, non-smoker, fun, and from Wisconsin. Please email me if you are looking for a place to live.

not looking for a roommate, but I am curious about what part of dsm you bought in, and a rough price range. pm me?
thanks

We are looking at purchasing as well. However I have a wife and 3 kids, so enough roomies for me thank you. We have looked at some townhomes. Even some in the Ankeny area as well. We're coming up April 7th and 8th to do some home shopping and school shopping etc. It's amazing how fast things are moving.

From what I gather, I'm pretty sure that you can't even apply for the Grad Plus until after July 1st of this year. I can't imagine why someone would choose an alternative loan from a private lender over the federal Grad Plus loan?!? Any ideas? Also, this is what it says on the link provided by the Portal:

If you want to apply for a Grad Plus Loan the on-line application will be on the FA packet on the portal as soon as it is available.

Happy house/apartment hunting to everyone.

True dat, Double true.

I don't know, but maybe an alternative could sneak under the Grad Plus 8.5% interest rate.

I am curious about this also.
One nice thing about the GRAD Plus is that it can be included in federal consolidation loans.

As far as housing... My wife and I are going to be in Des Moines April 14-17 to check some things out. I can hardly wait! I am getting excited, but time is flying by so fast. Can't wait to meet you all.
