Thanks expat. You have been tons of help. I think I'm going to call tomorrow to see if I can get an apt there. When I called two weeks ago, he said there wasn't a one bedroom available until September. I would have to live in a studio apt for a month but that's okay.
I'll have my car there if you need a ride! You would have to either sit in the back seat or close your eyes...it's a scary ride. haha

Anyone interested in tickets to the Pearl Jam show in Chicago Wed. 5-17-06 :horns: ....I have 2 good fan club seats available.....Face value....CATCH: you have to be a Ten Club member to transfer the tickets. PM me for details.

Anyone have comments on the Maple Grove Villas? They look really nice.

I couldn't agree more. They look really nice and seem very much affordable for what they are offering. In fact, they were originally my first choice. Unfortunately for myself, they will not allow unmarried couples to live together. Personally, it seems strange to me, but I fully respect their right to deny whomever they want. Additionally, I know there are people who also would agree with them on this forum, and I respect you individuals as well. But it's my fiance I would be living with, and it would just be absolutely ridiculous to have 2 separate rents.

Anyways, I'm sure that didn't shed any additional light onto Maple Grove, but I wanted to at least say that I would definitely be considering living there if I had the option.

Well that's the weirdest thing I've ever heard of. I guess that comes from Midwest/Bible belt values. I'll be living with my boyfriend. I'm sure there are a lot of couples that will be doing the same. We're going to be super poor anyway without having to pay two rents.

Excluding everyone that has a fat bank account, how are you showing proof of income/loans to any apartment rental companies that you're interested in? We don't get our student aid reports until the end of June/July, so how are we supposed to show proof of loans? Just curious if anyone else has had this problem and knows how to resolve it.

Any advice would be appreciated. I'm probably just going to print off our student budget for the year and try to explain everything through that.

That's a good question. I'm not quite sure how I'm going to do it. I know that when I was in college, I just had to have a cosigner that made 3 1/2 times the rent per month (my parents). All that paperwork was such a pain. I would much rather just have it under my name but I'm sure I will need a cosigner again. Any other suggestions?
Good luck to you! I'm waiting to hear if there are going to be any one bedrooms available at Grand Colony. I want to go ahead and get an apartment in the next two weeks.

The deal at Maple Grove is that it's Low Income Restricted housing. So it's targeted at families who are poorer than their set incomes. That's why they don't allow unmarried couples live there b/c they're trying to keep out students who are looking for a good deal to keep room for families who really need it. Plus they're on the last exit in West Des Moines, so they're kind of far out there compared to anything else. I drove out there once to look at some townhouses they were building that way. They're nice but you have to be within the restrictions. It's like Section 8 government subsidized housing.

I already qualified for a 3 bedroom. She is sending the app. as we speak. Does this mean they are ghetto? They seem really nice. Does anyone know? How far away from DMU are they?
The Janitor intoduced them to me and that is where he will also be living.
Any input?

I would say that they are about a twenty minute drive in no traffic, but maybe someone who is currently living in DSM could say better--my experience is a few years old.

Wow, I guess I never looked into just how far they are. The shear distance probably would've kept me from living there. I understand that they're trying to keep it for low-income families, but how much lower does it get when you have 2 engaged students. Nevertheless, I have no hard feelings and am quite happy with where I'm going to live now. Apartment/house hunting is exciting to an extent, but it can also be somewhat stressful with not really knowing how happy you'll be at a place you just signed a 12 month contract for.

Good luck everyone!

I've never been inside of them but from the outside they look nice. The area is nice too. From my apartment on 8th and I235 in West Des Moines it took me about 20 mins to drive there. There's not a direct exit, you have to get off at Jordan Creek Parkway and then take some residental road there. Personally I would find something closer to school. Just more convienent.

grassy-ass. 👍
Thanks for the info.

Hey, does anyone know how "loud" it gets at the Imperial? One of my cats is a "talker" and he gets a bit loud on occasion......🙁…I am hoping that he doesn’t make the neighbors mad!! If the walls are oober thin that may be a bit of a problem…

Well we ended up buying a house in Ankeny, IA. We are excited to finally have a lot of this stuff wrapping up and getting things finalized. We will be moving around July 15th weekend or so. That should be fun. Hope everyone is enjoying their last few months!

How did you already qualify for subsidized housing? I thought you had to be living in Iowa to qualify?

I was placed on a wait list at Maple Groves and they called me and told me they had a 3 bedroom available. When I asked here about the income qualifications, she said they would contact my employer and find out what will be my last day of employment. They then will calculate the income FROM THAT POINT FORWARD. I'll be in school and thus will have NO income. At least, that is what she told me. Who knows? :scared:

I was just posting this in another thread and thought I'd drop it here as well. If you login to www.rent.com and find your future apartment, there may be a promotion going. For example, I'm moving into the fourseasons and rent.com is going to send me $100 for "finding" my place on rent.com. They mail it to your new address. It could be worth checking out.

Our $1000 deposit is credited to our tuition right? I'm just trying to remember and am currently unmotivated to find the answer myself.

The $1000 goes towards tuition, Luke.

Darn it. There goes anonymity. I suppose we're all going to be smoked out of our holes sooner or later.

Thanks for the reply though.

Do you folks think that we should really wear a white coat in anatomy lab??? I mean, after awhile, our nice white coats are gonna smell nice and fun, and maybe even have some delicious splatter marks....so couldn't we just wear scrubs or something along the lines of the pants that I jog in....nice and full of holes...I mean, those already smell as it is!! What do you think, spend big $$ on a long white coat that we are gonna stink up or just some scrubs???

Does anyone just want to scream because they are ready to start this $**! or what?!? I think I am going stir crazy......

The challenge is to see if you can hold out the entire semester with the same clothes...I dig on Old Football T's and Sweatz....By the end, my uniform was standing on it's own....Lab coats help a lot as it is one more layer between the goo and you....it also gets too warm to rock the long sleeves....Don't confuse your clinical whites with your lab whites (tans)....most schools provide lab whites.

On the anatomy tip...I attended "Body World" last night at the MN Science Mus.....It was super sweet....I highly recommend if you have not seen it yet....Skinless humans riding bikes may sound a little odd, but it was very well presented and educational....I can't wait to get back into the lab!!!

Is this right?

Yikes. Exams are all at 8/830 or so in the morning. So stupid me, I've had the joy of getting into a slightly different sleep/wake cycle that makes those way too early. At least I have a summer to try and snap out of it.

Also looks like Biochem is a beast that needs multiple slayings.

I just noticed this discussion. Yeah, I live in the townhouses just next to the one's your discussing. Mine are Triton Home builder. We bought one last year before moving here. Ours is very affordable and there are some for sale by the owners now. However, the Maple Grove Villas next door, of which you are referring, are nice on the inside and not gheto-ish. The commute is usually 12 minutes, except when there is road work or you leave to late and catch rush hour morning commute traffic on 235. PM me for any questions.

Hello, What About Cell?!? Darn good thing that I took both of those in my undergrad....sounds like a good time. Anyone notice that the anatomy exams are from 8:00-noon!?! I know they include both the practical and written but yikes, that'll be a good time....fo' sho'.

PS. I think I am going to go to body works either this weekend or next, but do you think it would be less busy during the weekdays?? My old anatomy prof (who I still do research with) saw it in chicago and said it was great! Can't wait to see cadavers riding bikes and running, because if I were a cadaver, I would certianly want to be riding a bike!!!

Thanks! Good to hear. How much are the townhouses being sold for (in your complex)? We haven't ruled out purchasing a house either. Thanks for the input. 👍

I'd bet that there is a one to one and a half hour written, and then 3 time slots or so for the practical. That's how they did it at my school at least. At least I hope I'm not taking a 4 hour anatomy test!!

Hey everybody,
I've been computerless for a spell...anyhow has anyone used a realtor they liked?
thanks

it really is getting exciting no?

I'm sure it will be set up something like that, my undergrad was similar...1 1/2 hour for the lecture exams and about 2 for the lab practical (no cadavers, though)..

I know we are all incoming students, but does anyone know of a good vet in the Des Moines area....I adopted a stray cat that has severe respiratory problems (she was inside of a car when someone started it), and now has two collapsed lungs. My parents are forkin' over the cash for me to take care of her, so I am willing to pay good $$ for a gooooood vet!!!

PS- Did you all notice that there were way more people who chatted with us back on the first couple of pages....now there are consistently the same people on here chatting. Some of their public profiles say they are coming to DMU in the fall...they must just be less chatty. Are we that pathetic??? Anyone actually going to do some anatomy over the summer?!??? I got the ATLAS OF CLINICAL GROSS ANATOMY for FREE, BRAND NEW, at FASEB, when I presented my research there....I saw this text in the DMU bookstore, and another student mentioned that it is super helpful for lab....perhaps I should actually read some of it now....or not????

Anatomy exams are split up 1.5hr for practical and 1.5hr for written. And your letter group rotates the 3 different times set up for each one. I think it's required that you wear a lab coat to anatomy lab.

Does anyone want to join shminger and I for dinner when we visit DMU June 4-7? It would be cool to meet everyone. Does anyone know any good places to eat there? Somewhere expensive...shminger is buying.
I love BBQ. 😉

This may be helpful or not at all...when I lived in Des Moines there was a little BBQ place (very little) by the Drake Dinner. It is called Sammy Jack's or something like that. It is (was?) on Cottage Grove inbetween 26th and 27th. I think it would be a good place to appease any lunch time BBQ cravings if BBQ dinner doesn't work out. It was an interesting place, it only served BBQ and was run by this neighborhood guy. I hope it still around, it was good.

I just asked a former Des Moines resident that I am currently crashing at their place and he said that it was still around this past summer and it is still super tasty.
👍

oh yeah, there is also Blues on Grand which is...on Grand Ave when you head downtown.

mmmm I hope there are good mexican restaurants. I don't know how I'm going to live without my tacos every Saturday and Sunday.

When you find a place lemme know. We've been going to On the Border b/c it's the closest you can get to TexMex even though it's a chain.

There are some authentic Mexican restaurants around Des Moines. My favorite haunt hands down in WDM is Aguila Real. Although my opinion may be swayed because I'm currently visiting my best friend at UT Austin.

This may be an ignorant comment, but do Texans like to put salsa on just about everything?! I ordered a black angus hamburger from a French restaurant in the Warehouse district and sure enough....salsa. Crab cakes...salsa. Hmmm.

Loving Austin so far though. I'm starting to wish that DSM had more quirky coffee shops, outdoor cafes, bars, and dance clubs though, but maybe I just haven't found them yet. Anyways, I'm inspired. Anyone else out there with me?

We live in San Antonio and we try to go to Austin as much as possible, we love it there!
I have heard great things about Aguila Real. We went to a place in Pleasant Hill, I think it was off of University?? It was pretty good.

Sure did. It looks as though it was primarily just stuff that you can access through the portal. However, they were kind enough to include an apartment guide book, which I thought was a nice gesture for sure.

All of this mail just keeps getting me more and more excited for next year.

I'm living in SA right now too. I was actually in Austin this past weekend for a friend's bday...went downtown woohoo. I REALLY miss it there. I'm going to be there next weekend too because my parents are going to be in town.

YES we do put salsa on everything (and lime and cilantro). yummy!

I got my orientation package in the mail today, too. It got me really excited about moving there in August. Yay!
